Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests of North East India are now in a critical stage. Over the years due to extensive use of forest resources and the overflow of populations to the forest areas, the deforestation process started creating many environmental as well as socio-economic problems for the traditional forest dwelling communities, degrading their society and ways of living. The role of the forest dwelling tribal communities can’t be ignored for forest conservation as traditionally they evolved a way of life which on the one hand, is woven around the forest ecology and forest resources, on the other hand, ensures that the forest is protected against the degradation my man and nature by evolving their unique and conservative system. Conservation helps the empowerment of forest communities and vice-versa. Their empowerment with provisions of all requirements prospers solving the problem of deforestation. This book discusses the impact of deforestation on tribal society vis-a-vis empowerment and conservation for the greater interest of protecting our natural environment and sustainable ways of living.

Book excerpt: With a long history and deep connection to the Earth’s resources, indigenous peoples have an intimate understanding and ability to observe the impacts linked to climate change. Traditional ecological knowledge and tribal experience play a key role in developing future scientific solutions for adaptation to the impacts. The book explores climate-related issues for indigenous communities in the United States, including loss of traditional knowledge, forests and ecosystems, food security and traditional foods, as well as water, Arctic sea ice loss, permafrost thaw and relocation. The book also highlights how tribal communities and programs are responding to the changing environments. Fifty authors from tribal communities, academia, government agencies and NGOs contributed to the book. Previously published in Climatic Change, Volume 120, Issue 3, 2013.

Book excerpt: The document summarizes the report that, based on a review of more than 250 studies, demonstrates the importance and urgency of climate action to protect the forests of the indigenous and tribal territories of Latin America as well as the indigenous and tribal peoples who protect them. These territories contain about a third of the continent's forests. That's 14% of the carbon stored in tropical forests around the world; These territories are also home to an enormous diversity of wild fauna and flora and play a key role in stabilizing the local and regional climate. Based on an analysis of the approaches that have proven effective in recent decades, a set of investments and policies is proposed for adoption by climate funders and government decision-makers in collaboration with indigenous and tribal peoples. These measures are grouped into five main categories: i) strengthening of collective territorial rights; ii) compensate indigenous and tribal communities for the environmental services they provide; iii) facilitate community forest management; iv) revitalize traditional cultures and knowledge; and v) strengthen territorial governance and indigenous and tribal organizations. Preliminary analysis suggests that these investments could significantly reduce expected carbon emissions at a low cost, in addition to offering many other environmental and social benefits.
