Book excerpt: In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.

Book excerpt: Information communication technology has become the engine block of every banking institution worldwide and Nigerian banking institutions are not exempted. In an attempt to meet up with the global challenges, commercial banks are not left out in the bid to improving banking system efficiency. For the purpose of this research, the historical and survey research methods were adopted. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Hypothesis formulate were tested using chi-square and regression analysis. The study finds that the traditional banking system is not in line with global trends and that the application and usage of information technology in the banking system is necessary for efficient service delivery. It also reveals the use of electronic banking as significantly revolutionizing service delivery to improve customer satisfaction through the various electronic fund transfer and payment services such as the automated teller machine (ATMs), and other cards services, internet banking, mobile banking and all sorts of banks and financial institution services to speed up service delivery for and to stimulate efficiency in the entire financial system. The study recommends that banks and other financial institutions should embark upon training programme for all operational staff of all banks and public awareness should be instituted to improve the knowledge of information communication technology and for performance adequacy to support the much needed efficiency and operational effectiveness and also to control the regular system failure that customers face. The study recommends how banks and government can streamline the problem of infrastructure in the economy. Banks should come together and form partnerships in the sharing and use of technological equipment to increase their efficiency and cost effectiveness.

Book excerpt: "This paper provides novel evidence on the importance of information technology (IT) in banking for entrepreneurship. To guide our analysis, we build a parsimonious model of bank screening and lending. The model predicts that IT in banking can spur entrepreneurship by making it easier for startups to borrow against collateral. We empirically show that job creation by young firms is stronger in US counties that are more exposed to IT-intensive banks. Consistent with a strengthened collateral channel, entrepreneurship increases by more in IT-exposed counties when house prices rise. Regressions at the bank level further show that banks' IT adoption makes credit supply more responsive to changes in local house prices, and reduces the importance of geographical distance between borrowers and lenders. These results suggest that IT adoption in the financial sector can increase dynamism by improving startups' access to finance."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Inclusive growth has been the catch word for most of the developing countries of the world to attain equity, justice. One of the more impressive aspects of India's growth story relates to the expansion of the banking infrastructure. Since 1969, India's banking network has grown tenfold from 8,000 branches to 80,000. However, it is a sad reality that for all the impressive growth, nearly 40% of the households in India - many of them rural - do not have a bank account. The exclusion of vast segment of the population - comprising mostly marginal farmers, agricultural workers, and casual laborers - is perceived as an impediment to inclusive growth. Additionally, financial apartheid is still haunting vast segments of the global community, especially in developing economies. This book highlights how financial inclusion culminates in inclusive growth. It portrays the scope and dimension of different financial inclusion strategies, and it looks at the role and potential of different agencies involved in financial inclusion, tackling the issues of financial exclusion in order to attain a target of inclusive growth.
