Book excerpt: The present study was undertaken with an overall objective of assessment of food consumption pattern, calorie and nutrient derivation. In Tumakuru district of Karnataka state, primary data were collected from 120 rural households. The rural households inadequately consumed proteins, milk and milk products. In terms of vegetables, fruits and egg and meat consumption, they were severely inadequate. Among the nutrients intake, the households were inadequate in fats, iron, riboflavin, niacin and carotene intake. The subsidized food items through PDS had greatly helped in attainment of calorie security but had severely lacked in terms of providing balanced diet security. In the presence of food subsidy, share of total expenditure on food was 67.24 per cent among AAY farm households and 59.98 per cent among BPL farm households, which would rise to 75.16 per cent and 65.62 per cent, respectively in the absence of food subsidy. In the presence of food subsidy, proportion of income saved was 30.72 per cent among AAY farm households and 24.19 per cent among BPL farm households, which would decrease to 8.65 per cent and 11.76 per cent, respectively in the absence of food subsidy. In the presence of food subsidy, the vulnerability to food insecurity of AAY farm, AAY non-farm and BPL non-farm households reduced significantly. The optimized food expenditure per consumptive unit per day for major nutrients and all nutrients was Rs. 34.49 and Rs. 36.56 respectively. The food basket of rural households needs to be expanded to ensure nutritional security.

Book excerpt: Managing food security in a predominantly rural economy such as India, requires an understanding not only of how agricultural policies of food supply and incomes but also how households acquire food and cope with insecurity of food. Many economists regard income as the main indicator of welfare, but other planners maintain that food consumption, health and nutrition of household members are also important in defining a household s standard of living. The main concerned of this study is to trace the pathways from economic and social policies to food security and ultimately to nutrition. Contents: Introduction, Review of Literature, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Summary and Conclusions.

Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has decimated the lives and livelihoods of people around the world. The impact of COVID-19 has been especially devastating for low-income families in rural areas of India. Food insecurity became pervasive in rural areas soon after the nationwide lockdown was announced, as many families relied on daily wage work to fund basic necessities. By providing cash transfers and the additional foodgrains, Indian policymakers acted swiftly to reduce the financial impact on family income and consumption. This paper investigates the factors affecting the participation of rural families in the cash transfer program and the effect of government cash transfers on food insecurity. Results indicate that the government cash transfer program in India decreased moderate food insecurity by 2.4% and severe food insecurity by about 0.92%.

Book excerpt: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Would it be possible to provide people with a basic income as a right? The idea has a long history. This book draws on two pilot schemes conducted in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh, in which thousands of men, women and children were provided with an unconditional monthly cash payment. In a context in which the Indian government at national and state levels spends a vast amount on subsidies and selective schemes that are chronically expensive, inefficient, inequitable and subject to extensive corruption, there is scope for switching at least some of the spending to a modest basic income. This book explores what would be likely to happen if this were done. The book draws on a series of evaluation surveys conducted over the course of the eighteen months in which the main pilot was in operation, supplemented with detailed case studies of individuals and families. It looks at the impact on health and nutrition, on schooling, on economic activity, women's agency and the welfare of those with disabilities. Above all, the book considers whether or not a basic income could be transformative, in not only improving individual and family welfare but in promoting economic growth and development, as well as having an emancipatory effect for people long mired in conditions of poverty and economic insecurity.
