Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of age-ambiguous and sexualized clothing styles (ASCS) on the development of early adolescent females' self-concept. Both the socialization and consumer socialization models were utilized to address the factors contributing to the development of early adolescent females. Thirty-one young adult female college students participated in in-depth interviews consisting of retrospective questions concerning the clothing styles adopted in early adolescence and an evaluation of their current self-concept through the Who am I? test. All of their mothers were also interviewed in regards to the clothing styles their daughters adopted in early adolescence and the relationship they perceived those styles had with their daughters' current self-concept. For data analysis the constant comparative method and open-coding were used, resulting in the following findings. First, ASCS in the US were typically represented by spaghetti straps, low-rise jeans, midriff bearing tops, short skirts or shorts, and logo tees emblazoned with sexual innuendos. Second, the reasons early adolescent females adopted ASCS were in order to fit-in, to be cool and popular.

Book excerpt: Media and the Sexualization of Childhood examines the on-going debates surrounding the prominence of sexual themes in children’s lives, from clothes and accessories, toys and games, to music, entertainment media, advertising, and new media platforms. Parents, educators and politicians around the developed world have raised concerns about the effects all these experiences can have on the socialisation and psychological development of children and the extent to which the premature introduction of sexuality into their lives can place them at risk of unwanted attention. This book explores these issues using an evidence based approach that draws on research findings from around the world, representing the most comprehensive single account of the field. The book will be invaluable to students studying topics surrounding children and the media and childhood studies, as well as students of communication, media, cultural studies, sociology, psychology and health science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Body image is a significant issue for the majority of adolescents. Anxieties relating to body image can be crippling across both genders, their debilitating effects sometimes leading to mental health problems. This important book is the first of its kind to focus specifically on adolescents, providing a comprehensive overview of the biological, psychological and socio-cultural factors relating to the development of body image. It also provides a detailed review of the measures which can be taken to address body dissatisfaction. Discussing the role of culture, family, peers, schools, sport and media in stimulating a negative body image, the book also examines the different challenges faced by girls and boys as they grow. Eating disorders and body change strategies are also addressed, as well as the challenges faced by youngsters affected by conditions causing visible differences, such as hair loss in cancer patients. The book also presents original research, including the results from a large Australian study of the body image and associated health behaviours of adolescent boys, and the results of a study of current teaching practices relating to body image. Adolescence and Body Image will be ideal reading for students and researchers from a variety of fields, including developmental, health, and social psychology, sociology, and cultural and health studies. Professionals working with young people, whether in education, health promotion or any other allied discipline will also find this book an invaluable resource.

Book excerpt: "Although the adolescent girl's interest in self-enhancement has long been recognized, the actual research in this field has been negligible. This study was undertaken in an effort to apply some of the recent findings in adolescent psychology and the psychology of personality to an understanding of girls' behavior in relation to their appearance and dress. Since this research was first begun, considerable popular interest has been focused on teen-age girls' clothing and appearance. For example, the teen-age group has received much attention as a merchandise market; special departments in shops have been built up, new lines of cosmetics created solely for their use have been launched, and fashion magazines with special appeal for this age group have been introduced. It would therefore seem to be more important than ever to investigate systematically this sphere of girls' interests in order to provide additional bases for interpreting the psychological factors underlying girls' preferences in clothes and the satisfactions they seek to gain from the manner of their dress"--Preface. Book excerpt: Summary: "This book addresses the interaction of the media, sexuality and self-efficacy in teenage women. In doing so, it is also inclusive of class and power issues and the perceptual reactions of young women to an increasingly sexualized media. It includes a combination of qualitative and quantitative research examining the interaction of self-efficacy, as individual empowerment, with sexualized media imagery. It demonstrates how sexualized images projected by advertising, and the media in general, are perceived as power by adolescent females. Power is defined as self-efficacy or a personal power. Sexualized imagery proved to be an indicator of perceptions of both empowerment and a stratified class structure, with the more sexualized the imagery, the higher the perception of both self-efficacy and high social status or class. The book provides an in-depth exploration of young womenʼs perceptions of sexuality and power. Additionally, the book examines sexualized imagery from a historical standpoint and as a component in adolescent sexual development."--Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single glance at our clothing reveals a wealth of information about how we perceive ourselves, each other, and our place in society. In this classic text, Susan B. Kaiser brings to the surface the unconscious thought processes we use to decide not just how clothes look, but what they mean. In a new section written especially for this updated edition, Kaiser addresses the increasingly multicultural emphasis of the study of clothing and appearance. She also reexamines fashion in terms of gender, ethnicity, sexuality, and social class, offering a more broad-based and inclusive vision of the social psychology of clothing.
