Book excerpt: This thesis assesses the ability of carbon fiber polymer-matrix structural composites to sense their own damage. The self-sensing involved electrical measurement. The damage was inflicted by impact at controlled energy levels. The study encompassed damage sensitivity determination, data precision analysis, specimen dimension effects and electrical contact configuration design. The resistance of the segment of the specimen containing the impact point increased upon impact. The resistance obtained by using the four-probe method is a more sensitive, more accurate and more precise (less data scatter) indicator of impact damage than that obtained by using two-probe method. The two-dimensional electric potential/resistance method is much less sensitive than the one-dimensional resistance method. In the two-dimensional method, the resistance method is more sensitive than the potential method. The sensitivity of the potential method is enhanced when the potential gradient line is close to the current line. The electric potential method is effective for damage sensing in carbon fiber polymer-matrix composite when the distance between the current line and potential gradient line is sufficiently small, such as 1.0 mm in the through-thickness direction; it is ineffective when this distance is 2.1 mm or more. The resistance method has no thickness limitation, but it suffers from current path distortion upon damage and consequent reduced sensitivity.

Book excerpt: Carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs) have been widely used in aerospace, civil engineering and so on in recent decades because of their excellent mechanical properties (high strength and stiffness), low density, long-term durability and high resistances to corrosion, pressure and other harsh environment conditions. Since CFRPs are multiphase materials that consist of polymer matrix and carbon fibers plies. Local separation between plies and/or debonding at fiber-matrix interface may occur during application. Damage in this form of delamination may affect the material properties such as the ability of stress transmission, which leads to component failure in the vehicles or even disastrous loss. Hence, the study of damage detection is necessary to ensure the safety use of CFRPs. In this thesis, we first introduce the tensile test for CFRP sample. The test is conducted by hydraulic wedge grip with electrical potential measurement and acoustic emission sensors, respectively. Continuous wavelet transform is applied to analyze output signals, which enables us to see the differences between unbroken and broken samples. Electrical potential measurement provides direct information from the original output signal about the sample damage, and there is no external sensors needed. Acoustic emission method, on the other hand, helps us to make hypothesis on recognizing different failure modes. Then we study the impact of damage in the form of delamiantion and the damage in the form of hole. By measuring the electrical potential, we estimate the damage location experimentally, and the linear relationship between damage dimension ratio and average/maximum ratio of potential change is developed to estimate the damage size. Then via 3D FEA modeling, we study the undamaged and damaged cases numerically with the same conditions as in the experimental study, and the electrical potential distributions are obtained to evaluate the damage. The numerical result shows good agreement with the experimental result.

Book excerpt: However, for a specimen with large delamination extending beyond the electrode locations, the oblique resistance increased by 30%. This result suggests that for damage sensing applications, the spacing of electrodes relative to the size of the delamination is important. Finally CT image data was used to model 3-D void distributions and the electrical response of such specimens were compared to models with no voids. As the void content increased, the electrical resistance increased non-linearly. The relationship between void content and electrical resistance was attributed to a combination of three factors: (i) size and shape, (ii) orientation, and (iii) distribution of voids. As a whole, the current thesis provides a comprehensive framework for developing predictive, resistance-based damage sensing models for CFRP laminates of various layup and thickness.

Book excerpt: Aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are being investigated as a means for enhancing structural performance of composite structures. Inherent in introducing CNTs into existing polymer-matrix composites are new multifunctional attributes such as significantly enhanced electrical conductivity and piezoresistivity that may be used for damage sensing and inspection. Here, fiber-reinforced polymer-matrix laminates with aligned CNTs grown in-situ are coupled with a non-invasive sensing scheme utilizing the enhanced electrical conductivity of the laminates to infer damage based on resistance changes. The laminates contain long (~10 micron) aligned CNTs throughout the woven plies of the laminate, including at the ply interfaces. Electrodes are written onto the laminate surfaces using a direct-write process, and 3D damage inspection (in-plane and through-thickness) is demonstrated for impacted composite plates.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been introduced in fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPC) to enhance their capabilities in terms of sensing and improving electrical properties. Even though there have been extensive studies on incorporating MWCNTs into polymer matrix composites to monitor their integrity, no work has been found to provide a technique to detect, locate and quantify damage in large polymer composite structure (LPCS) and also to investigate electrical resistance behavior of glass fiber/epoxy/MWCNT composites subjected to multi-directional deformation. The thesis is organized into two major sections: Developing two new structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques to detect, locate and quantify damages in LPCS, and investigating electrical resistance behavior of glass fiber/epoxy/MWCNT composites subjected to multi-directional deformation. In the first part of the thesis, two new, practical and real-time SHM techniques have been developed. One is for LPCS made of electrically non-conducive fibers and MWCNT networks. The other is for LPCS made of electrically conducive fibers and MWCNT networks. In these techniques, MWCNTs are added into epoxy matrix. This modified matrix is then incorporated with long fibers to make large composite plates. Two different strategies have been proposed for measuring electrical properties of LPCS depending on the type of fibers. The large plate is marked with grid points where electrically conductive silver paints are deposited. The electrical resistances and potentials between the grid points for electrically non-conductive fibers and conductive fibers reinforced polymer composite structures containing MWCNT are measured respectively. These values are used as reference sets. It has been shown that the occurrence of the damage makes the electrical properties between the contact points surrounding this damage change. The significant change in the electrical properties between contact points is used as an indication for detection, location and quantification of damage in the large plates. The SHM computer programs are written to provide the facility to detect, locate and quantify damage for the LPCSs in real-time. Two new concepts have been introduced for detecting, locating and quantifying damage in LPCSs using MWCNT networks. One is uniformity of MWCNT distribution. The other is sensitivity to change in electrical resistance. A new model of resistors network has been proposed for composite plates with different electrical conductivity as a result of different quantity of MWCNT. Theoretical analyses are performed based on Ohm’s and Kirchhoff’s laws using Matlab Simulink. Good agreement is found between experimental and simulation results. In the second part of the thesis, the behavior of electrical resistance for glass fiber/epoxy composite laminates containing MWCNT subjected to uniaxial stresses along different directions is investigated. An explanation is provided for the electrical resistance behavior of the laminates containing MWCNT subjected to multi-directional deformation.

Book excerpt: Innovative Developments of Advanced Multifunctional Nanocomposites in Civil and Structural Engineering focuses on nanotechnology, the innovation and control of materials at 100 nm or smaller length scales, and how they have revolutionized almost all of the various disciplines of science and engineering study. In particular, advances in synthesizing, imaging, and manipulating materials at the nano-scale have provided engineers with a broader array of materials and tools for creating high-performance devices. Nanomaterials possess drastically different properties than those of their bulk counterparts mainly because of their high surface-to-mass ratios and high surface energies/reactivity. For instance, carbon nanotubes have been shown to possess impressive mechanical strength, stiffness, and electrical conductivity superior to that of bulk carbon. Whilst nanotechnology has become deeply rooted in electrical, chemical, and materials engineering disciplines, its proliferation into civil engineering did not begin until fairly recently. This book covers that proliferation and the main challenges associated with the integration of nanomaterials and nano-scale design principles into civil and structural engineering. Examines nanotechnology and its application to not only structural engineering, but also transportation, new infrastructure materials, and the applications of nanotechnology to existing structural systems Focuses on how nanomaterials can provide enhanced sensing capabilities and mechanical reinforcement of the original structural material Analyzes experimental and computational work carried out by world-renowned researchers
