The volume emphasizes the need to effectively address emerging antimicrobial resistance, strengthen health systems, and increase access to care. The attainable goals are to reduce incidence, develop innovative approaches, and optimize existing tools in resource-constrained settings.
Book Synopsis Immunological Aspects of Infectious Diseases by : G. Dick
Download or read book Immunological Aspects of Infectious Diseases written by G. Dick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first place may I say how grateful I and others are to those who have contributed chapters for this book; all of them are well known for their research on the subject on which they have written and each has indicated the background to his own specialist field by providing an extensive bibliography giving this book a total reference list of over 2,500. Although there have been enormous advances in immunology over recent years, much of the new knowledge in relation to infectious diseases was scattered over the world's literature and is now brought together in a single volume. Furthermore, while a number of previously unknown infectious diseases have recently been discovered (e.g. Marburg and Lassa virus infections and Legionnaires' disease) to which many new techniques have been applied, there seemed to be no clear statement of the rationale for their use, or for their further exploitation in some of the more common infectious diseases which are discussed in this book.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Modelling of Immune Response in Infectious Diseases by : Guri I. Marchuk
Download or read book Mathematical Modelling of Immune Response in Infectious Diseases written by Guri I. Marchuk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning his work on the monograph to be published in English, this author tried to present more or less general notions of the possibilities of mathematics in the new and rapidly developing science of infectious immunology, describing the processes of an organism's defence against antigen invasions. The results presented in this monograph are based on the construc tion and application of closed models of immune response to infections which makes it possible to approach problems of optimizing the treat ment of chronic and hypertoxic forms of diseases. The author, being a mathematician, had creative long-Iasting con tacts with immunologists, geneticist, biologists, and clinicians. As far back as 1976 it resulted in the organization of a special seminar in the Computing Center of Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sci ences on mathematical models in immunology. The seminar attracted the attention of a wide circle of leading specialists in various fields of science. All these made it possible to approach, from a more or less united stand point, the construction of models of immune response, the mathematical description of the models, and interpretation of results.

Book Synopsis Immunology and Infectious Disease by : Lesley A. Doughty
Download or read book Immunology and Infectious Disease written by Lesley A. Doughty and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume provides a mechanistic look at key aspects of the inflammatory response seen in critical illness. Key cells and mediators involved in the innate inflammatory response and the pathways employed to combat infection or respond to injury are emphasized. It has become clear that a delicate balance exists to allow eradication of infection with minimal immune-mediated tissue injury in the process. For this reason an up-to-date discussion of how the inflammatory response down regulates itself has been included. The inflammatory response in the critically ill is vastly different than in healthy hosts. For this reason, discussions about the mechanisms of pharmacologic immune suppression and other less commonly considered immunomodulated states seen frequently in critical care medicine have been included. Given the differences in immune function seen in critical illness, the importance of considering the immune system an organ whose function must be monitored and optimized for the best possible outcome has been highlighted. In addition, we have included up-to-date discussions of prevention and diagnostic approaches to extremely common infectious entities which must be monitored for and treated appropriately in the setting of critical illness induced immune dysfunction.
Book Synopsis Nutrition, Immunity and Infection by : Prakash S. Shetty
Download or read book Nutrition, Immunity and Infection written by Prakash S. Shetty and published by CABI. This book was released on 2010 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infectious diseases are an important cause of malnutrition. Recurrent infections increase the risk of malnutrition while poor nutritional status results in lowered immune status and predisposes to infectious disease thus propagating the vicious cycle of infection and malnutrition. The nutrition-infection-immunity axis is crucial for both developed and developing countries and is now a central feature of many nutrition and infectious disease courses. Bringing together nutrition and immunology, "Nutrition, Immunity and Infections" covers the topic in an accessible format for all studen.
