Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a concise and comprehensive introduction to key immunotoxicological issues for all those interested in, but with no prior knowledge of, this area of toxicology. The first section explores the health consequences of immunotoxicity, namely the adverse effects related to chemically-induced immunosuppression and immunostimulation, hypersensitivity reactions and autoimmune diseases, with an overview of major immunotoxicants. The second part describes the latest methods used to detect and evaluate, preclinically and clinically, the unexpected immunotoxic effects of xenobiotics. Trends in implementing strategies and recent changes to the regulatory aspects are also considered. The third section examines possible future developments, including In Vitro methods, biomarkers of immunotixicity and risk assessment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural and man-made disasters--earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, industrial crises, and many others--have claimed more than 3 million lives during the past 20 years, adversely affected the lives of at least 800 million people, and caused more than 50 billion dollars in property damages. A major disaster occurs almost daily in some part of the world. Increasing population densities in flood plains, along vulnerable coastal areas, and near dangerous faults in the earth's crust, as well as the rapid industrialization of developing economies are factors likely to make the threat posed by natural disasters much bigger in the future. Illustrated with examples from recent research in the field, this book summarizes the most pertinent and useful information about the public health impact of natural and man-made disasters. It is divided into four sections dealing with general concerns, geophysical events, weather-related problems, and human-generated disasters. The author starts with a comprehensive discussion of the concepts and role of surveillance and epidemiology, highlighting general environmental health concerns, such as sanitation, water, shelter, and sewage. The other chapters, based on a variety of experiences and literature drawn from both developing and industrialized countries, cover discrete types of natural and technological hazards, addressing their history, origin, nature, observation, and control. Throughout the book the focus is on the level of epidemiologic knowledge on each aspect of natural and man-made disasters. Exposure-, disease-, and health-event surveillance are stressed because of the importance of objective data to disaster epidemiology. In addition, Noji pays particular attention to prevention and control measures, and provides practical recommendations in areas in which the public health practitioner needs more useful information. He advocates stronger epidemiologic awareness as the basis for better understanding and control of disasters. A comprehensive theoretical and practical treatment of the subject, The Public Health Consequences of Disasters is an invaluable tool for epidemiologists, disaster relief specialists, and physicians who treat disaster victims.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renal transport and xenobiotic metabolism play an important role in the detoxication and excretion of potentially toxic xenobiotics. However, recent experimental evidence has demonstrated that renal xenobiotic metabolism and renal transport processes also play an important role in the nephrotoxicity of xenobiotics and xenobiotic metabolites. The high blood flow to the kidney combined with its ability to concentrate solutes may expose the kidney to high concentrations of xenobiotics and xenobiotics metabolites present in the systemic circulation. Recently, it has been demonstrated that xenobiotic metabolites formed in the liver and other organs may be targeted to the kidney by selective transport systems~ many xenobiotics require enzymatic transformation to proximate reactive metabolites to elicit their toxic and carcinogenic effects. The enzymatic formation of reactive metabolites is termed bioactivation. The bioactivation mechanisms for many nephrotoxicants have, at least in part, been elucidated in the past 15 years. Many ultimate toxicants formed in the kidney are electrophiles whose interaction with cellular macromolecules may cause a perturbation of normal cell function resulting in necrosis and/or cancer (Anders 1988). Electrophilic metabolites may bind to nucleophilic sites in cellular macromolecules~ the importance of covalent modification of protein and DNA in cell killing and in the induction of tumors is established (Miller and Miller 1981~ Nelson and Pearson 1990~ Hinson and Roberts 1992). The objective of this review is to summarize new information about renal transport, renal bioactivation and their relation to nephrotoxicity using two relevant example for the basic mechanisms outlined above.

This book was released on 1999-06-13 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every aspect of immune function and host defense is dependent upon a proper supply and balance of nutrients. Severe malnutrition can cause significant alteration in immune response, but even subclinical deficits may be associated with an impaired immune response, and an increased risk of infection. Infectious diseases have accounted for more off-duty days during major wars than combat wounds or nonbattle injuries. Combined stressors may reduce the normal ability of soldiers to resist pathogens, increase their susceptibility to biological warfare agents, and reduce the effectiveness of vaccines intended to protect them. There is also a concern with the inappropriate use of dietary supplements. This book, one of a series, examines the impact of various types of stressors and the role of specific dietary nutrients in maintaining immune function of military personnel in the field. It reviews the impact of compromised nutrition status on immune function; the interaction of health, exercise, and stress (both physical and psychological) in immune function; and the role of nutritional supplements and newer biotechnology methods reported to enhance immune function. The first part of the book contains the committee's workshop summary and evaluation of ongoing research by Army scientists on immune status in special forces troops, responses to the Army's questions, conclusions, and recommendations. The rest of the book contains papers contributed by workshop speakers, grouped under such broad topics as an introduction to what is known about immune function, the assessment of immune function, the effect of nutrition, and the relation between the many and varied stresses encountered by military personnel and their effect on health.

Book excerpt: Neurobehavioral Methods and Effects in Occupational and Environmental Health documents the proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium in Environmental Research held in Tokyo in 1991. This book focuses on the development and application of neuropsychobehavioral methods in occupational and environmental health and advances in the knowledge of the effects on the nervous system and human behavior of occupational and environmental factors. This compilation provides forceful evidence of different manifestations of neurotoxicity and their etiologies. Neurotoxicity is a major adverse effect of chemical exposure and is particularly serious in developing countries. This publication is a good reference for students and practitioners of disciplines such as behavioral science, psychosomatic and occupational medicine, nutrition and food science, public health, and hygiene and preventive medicine.
