Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The home is at the forefront of rapid transformation brought upon the expansion of globalising economies, transnational migration, and the widespread uptake of ubiquitous digital communication technologies. This book unravels how geographically dispersed family members use smartphones, social media, and mobile applications in forging and sustaining long-distance relationships. It foregrounds the diverse, personalised, intimate, and creative mobile practices of fragmented family members in the conduct of everyday household interactions, festivities, homeland connections, and crisis management. On the one hand, mobile device use facilitates transnational connectivity, paving the way for enabling intimate ties, care expressions and homeland linkages. Yet, communicative tensions also arise when digital routines are shaped by familial norms and expectations, uneven financial conditions, asymmetrical technological access and capacities, and migration policies and processes. It is by deploying various strategies that transnational family members cope with an often unstable, unsettling, and ambivalent networked environment. Ultimately, this book provides a nuanced perspective on examining the mobilisation of a home from afar in the age of smartphones and mobile applications"--

Book excerpt: Ballot box voting is often considered the essence of political freedom. But it has two major shortcomings: individual voters have little chance of making a difference, and they face strong incentives to remain ignorant about the issues at stake. "Voting with your feet," however, avoids both these pitfalls and offers a wider range of choices. In Free to Move, Ilya Somin explains how broadening opportunities for foot voting can greatly enhance political liberty for millions of people around the world. People can vote with their feet through international migration, choosing where to live within a federal system, and by making decisions in the private sector. Somin addresses a variety of common objections to expanded migration rights, including claims that the "self-determination" of natives requires giving them the power to exclude migrants, and arguments that migration is likely to have harmful side effects, such as undermining political institutions, overburdening the welfare state, increasing crime and terrorism, and spreading undesirable cultural values. While these objections are usually directed at international migration, Somin shows how a consistent commitment to such theories would also justify severe restrictions on domestic freedom of movement. By making a systematic case for a more open world, Free to Move challenges conventional wisdom on both the left and the right. This revised and expanded edition addresses key new issues, including fears that migration could spread dangerous diseases, such as Covid-19, claims that immigrants might generate a political backlash that threatens democracy, and the impact of remote work.

However, property investment remains a complex business - for example, what type of investment is best for a portfolio? Has every single expense been accounted for in renovating that 'bargain' property? What exactly are the implications of the credit crunch and the sub-prime market for the average property investor? The Complete Guide to Investing in Property looks at all aspects of generating money from property - whether that be by renting out spare rooms to lodgers, property development, buying land, holiday rentals or becoming a landlord. Fully updated for this fifthedition, it takes a fresh look at investing in the social housing market and using property as part of a pension plan, as well as providing commentary on the latest legislative developments governing landlords and tenants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individual foreign investment in residential real estate by new middle-class and super-rich investors is re-emerging as a key issue in academic, policy and public debates around the world. At its most abstract, global real estate is increasingly thought of as a liquid asset class that is targeted by foreign individual investors who are seeking to diversify their investment portfolios. But foreign investors are also motivated by intergenerational familial security, transnational migration strategies and short-term educational plans, which are all closely entwined with global real estate investment. Government and local public responses to the latest manifestation of global real estate investment have taken different forms. These range from pro-foreign investment, primarily justified on geopolitical and macro-economic grounds, to anti-foreign investment for reasons such as mitigating public dissent and protecting the local housing market. Within this changing geopolitical context, this book offers a diverse range of case studies from Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Russia, Australia and Korea. It will be of interest to academics, policymakers and university students who are interested in the globalisation of local real estate. The chapters in this book were originally published in the International Journal of Housing Policy.

This volume offers an overview of different disciplinary and methodological approaches to second homes while simultaneously providing a broad geographical reach. Divided into four parts exploring governance, development, community and mobile second homes, the book provides a contemporary account of the major issues in an area of growing international interest. Book excerpt: What is Real Estate Economics The application of economic principles to real estate markets is precisely what is meant by the term "real estate economics." A number of attempts are made to define, explain, and forecast patterns of supply and demand, as well as prices. In contrast to the research on real estate trends, which focuses on the commercial and structural changes that are influencing the sector, the closely related discipline of home economics has a more limited scope, focused on residential real estate markets. Both of these approaches make use of partial equilibrium analysis, urban economics, spatial economics, fundamental and extensive research, surveys, and financial analysis.
