Book Synopsis Diefenbaker and Latin America by : Jason Gregory Zorbas
Download or read book Diefenbaker and Latin America written by Jason Gregory Zorbas and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-13 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Diefenbaker’s Latin American policy was based on his vision of Canada’s national interest, which placed a strong emphasis on the achievement of greater autonomy in foreign policy for Canada vis-à-vis the US and the expansion of Canadian exports to the region. Though Diefenbaker was often accused of being driven by anti-Americanism, instead his Latin American policy was based on his vision of Canada’s national interest. For Diefenbaker, an enhanced relationship with Latin America had the potential to lessen Canada’s dependency on the US, while giving Latin American countries an outlet for their trade, commercial and financial relations other than the US. This new approach implied that Canada would formulate and implement policy that focused more on Canadian political interests and goals. It was not a matter of charting a totally independent policy from the US in Latin America – true policy independence was impossible to achieve. Nor was it the case that Canada would necessarily set itself in opposition to the US when it disagreed with its policies. For Diefenbaker the goal was to pursue a foreign policy that was aligned with, but not subservient to, the US.

For more than half-a-century, India has been one of the largest source countries of migrants to the USA and Canada. This report is an attempt to examine Indian migration to the two American continents following diverse trajectories. Besides providing an overview of migration from India, the report also traces immigration of foreigners and return migration of Indians from the American continents to India. The focus of India Migration Report 2010-2011 is on putting together available information on issues involving various migration patterns and analysing the major factors and policies that shape them. The book will serve as an important reference source for graduate students and researchers on migration generally, as well as being of obvious interest to specialists on the global Indian diaspora.
Book Synopsis Migration and Remittances in Latin America and the Caribbean by : Ms.Kimberly Beaton
Download or read book Migration and Remittances in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Ms.Kimberly Beaton and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outward migration has been an important phenomenon for countries in Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC), particularly those in Central America and the Caribbean. This paper examines recent trends in outward migration from and remittances to LAC, as well as their costs and benefits. For the home country, the negative impact from emigration on labor resources and productivity seems to outweigh growth gains from remittances, notably for the Caribbean. However, given emigration, remittance flows play key financing and stabilizing roles in Central America and the Caribbean. They facilitate private consumption smoothing, support financial sector stability and fiscal revenues, and help reduce poverty and inequality, without strong evidence for harmful competitiveness effects through shifts in the real exchange rate.

Book Synopsis Crossing the 49th Parallel by : Bruno Ramirez
Download or read book Crossing the 49th Parallel written by Bruno Ramirez and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the hundred years ending in 1930, an estimated 2.8 million Canadians moved south of the 49th Parallel and settled in the United States. The human and technical resources they brought made Canadian immigrants integral to the growth of New England, the Great Lakes region, and the west coast. Crossing the 49th Parallel is the first book to encompass that entire, continent-wide population shift. It brings Canadian migration to the center of both Canadian and U.S. history. Bruno Ramirez researches the contents of previously unused border records to bring to light the wide variety of local contexts and historical circumstances that led Canadian men, women, and children to cross the border and become key actors in the U.S. economy and society. Ramirez goes beyond these statistical data, consulting qualitative sources and case studies to reveal the motives and aspirations of individuals and family groups. The comparative perspective of Crossing the 49th Parallel allows Ramirez to explain the distinctive roles of French- and Anglo-Canadians in the immigrant movement. By shifting the viewpoint from a continental to a transatlantic one, Ramirez also unveils Canada's important role in international migration; it served as a temporary destination for many Europeans who subsequently remigrated to the United States.
