Download or read book Immersion, the Act of Christian Baptism (Classic Reprint) written by John T. Christian and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Immersion, the Act of Christian Baptism This book is the result of long and patient investigation. It was with a view of satisfying the author's own mind that these studies were begun, and with no intention of writing a book. Many large libraries have been gone over, and a somewhat extensive correspondence conducted. Many of the books quoted are exceedingly rare, and many more locked up in foreign languages, and it occurred to me that these authorities might be of service to those who have neither the time nor opportunity to investigate so large a range of literature. I am under obligation to many friends who have assisted me in divers ways. I cordially mention my lifelong friend, Prof. Arthur Yager, Ph. D., of Georgetown College, Ky. He was especially helpful in translating French and German authors. And I am indebted to Rev. Basil Manly, D. D., LL. D., of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, for suggestions in Hebrew and Syriac. This book has been written in no controversial spirit, and it is given to the public with a sincere desire to do good. That it is not faultless the author is well aware, but he does believe that the propositions lain down are in accord with the Holy Scriptures, and in harmony with the universal teachings of history. Download or read book Baptism written by David F. Wright and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian church confesses "one baptism." But the church's answers to how, whom and when to baptize, and even what it means or does, are famously varied. This book provides a forum for thoughtful proponents of three principal evangelical views to state their case, respond to the others, and then provide a summary response and statement. Sinclair Ferguson sets out the case for infant baptism, Bruce Ware presents the case for believers' baptism, and Anthony Lane argues for a mixed practice. As with any good conversation on a controversial topic, this book raises critical issues, challenges preconceptions and discloses the soft points in each view. Evangelicals who wish to understand better their own church's practice or that of their neighbor, or who perhaps are uncertain of their own views, will value this incisive book.

Download or read book Believer's Baptism written by Thomas R. Schreiner and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is believer’s baptism the clear teaching of the New Testament Scriptures? What are the historical and theological challenges to believer’s baptism? What are the practical applications for believer’s baptism today? Volume two in the NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY STUDIES IN BIBLE & THEOLOGY (NACSBT) series for pastors, advanced Bible students, and other deeply committed laypersons addresses these compelling questions. Indeed, Believer’s Baptism begins with the belief that believer’s baptism (as opposed to infant baptism or other faith proclaiming methods) is the clear teaching of the New Testament. Along the way, the argument is supported by written contributions from Andreas Kostenberger, Robert Stein, Thomas Schreiner, Stephen Wellum, Steve McKinion, Jonathan Rainbow, Shawn Wright, and Mark Dever. Users will find this an excellent extension of the long-respected NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY.

Book Synopsis Don't Fire Your Church Members by : Jonathan Leeman
Download or read book Don't Fire Your Church Members written by Jonathan Leeman and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church membership is not just a status, it’s an office. Leaders shouldn’t fire members from the responsibilities given to them by Jesus—they should train them! When members are trained, the church grows in holiness and love, discipleship and mission. Complacency and nominalism are diminished. Jesus gives every church member an office in the church’s government: to assume final responsibility for guarding the what and the who of the gospel in the church and its ministry. Similarly, Jesus gives leaders to the church for equipping the members to do this church-building and mission-accomplishing work. In our day, the tasks of reinvigorating congregational authority and elder authority must work together. The vision of congregationalism pictured in this book offers an integrated view of the Christian life. Congregationalism is biblical, but biblical congregationalism just might look a little different than you expect. It is nothing less than Jesus’ authorization for living out his kingdom rule among a people on mission.
