Book Synopsis The Republic of Venice in the 18th Century by : Walter Panciera
Download or read book The Republic of Venice in the 18th Century written by Walter Panciera and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the last century of life of the Republic of Venice. It aims to show why the "Serenissima", unlike large countries such as France or England, was not on the way to becoming a modern nation. Until its end, the city of Venice never took the shape of a real national capital, but remained the dominant centre linking wide-ranging and diverse territories around the Adriatic. The particularism, or rather polycentrism, of its state apparatus is the key to understanding its limitations, as well as the legacy left in Venice's vast domains, reaching from Corfu to Lombardy. In the 18th century the Republic was weak compared to the great European states. Its institutions and leadership had been frozen for two centuries and there was no political reform, although Enlightenment culture diffused widely over the century. On the economic level, however, there was little sign of "decay": merchant traffic continued to prosper and there were a number of new developments in the manufacturing sphere.

Book Synopsis Dell’informe 2. Assemblaggi by : Marco Navarra
Download or read book Dell’informe 2. Assemblaggi written by Marco Navarra and published by LetteraVentidue Edizioni. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Tongue Set Free by : Elias Canetti
Download or read book The Tongue Set Free written by Elias Canetti and published by Granta Books (Uk). This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY: LITERARY. The Tongue Set Free is so beautifully written. It begins wtih an extraordinary image, Canetti's earliest memory. He comes out of a room. A man makes him stick out his tongue; if he talks he will cut it off. Years later Canetti realises that this was his nursemaid's lover, frightening him into silence about their rendezvous. The idea of speaking as the entry into forbidden grown-up life dominates this book. When he is seven his father dies. He is propelled from childhood into adulthood, from his father to his mother, through language. In an extraordinary, cruel episode his mother forces him to learn perfect adult German in three months, to replace her husband as quickly as possible. His tongue is set free: he has won his mother, against brothers , against all lovers. It is the most intense Oedipal relationhsip I have ever seen described and Canetti describes it brilliantly. But it's all extraordinary, and all masterfully written.
