Book excerpt: This small book is the first comprehensive essay to place archetypal psychology within a major tradition of modern thought-the tradition of mythical thinking-and to recognize imagination as the primal force and basic reality of human life. By drawing upon the writings of four twentieth-century thinkers, Roberts Avens clarifies the post-Jungian direction of psychology as it moves toward poetic and polytheistic imagination. He then compares the radical achievements of this direction in resolving the 'ego-question' with the methods and ideas of the East: Buddhism, Tantrism, Zen, and Vedanta. Avens's grasp of understanding, easy familiarity with his subject, and refined insights together make this book an introductory text and an advance into new territory.

Book Synopsis The Language of Public Administration by : David John Farmer
Download or read book The Language of Public Administration written by David John Farmer and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 1995-07-30 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coping with the practical problems of bureaucracy is hampered by the limited self-conception and the constricted mindsets of mainstream public administration thinking. Modernist public administration theory, although valuable and capable of producing ever more remarkable results, is limiting as an explanatory and catalytic force in resolving fundamental problems about the nature, size, scope, and functioning of public bureaucracy and in transforming public bureaucracy into a more positive force. This original study specifies a reflexive language paradigm for public administration thinking and shows how a postmodern perspective permits a revolution in the character of thinking about public bureaucracy. The author considers imagination, deconstruction, deterritorialization, and alterity. Farmer's work emphasizes the need for an expansion in the character and scope of public administration's disciplinary concerns and shows clearly how the study and practice of public administration can be reinvigorated.

Book Synopsis Pathways into the Jungian World by : Roger Brooke
Download or read book Pathways into the Jungian World written by Roger Brooke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pathways into the Jungian World contributors from the disciplines of medicine, psychology and philosophy look at the central issues of commonality and difference between phenomenology and analytical psychology. The major theme of the book is how existential phenomenology and analytical psychology have been involved in the same fundamental cultural and therapeutic project - both legitimize the subtlety, complexity and depth of experience in an age when the meaning of experience has been abandoned to the dictates of pharmaceutical technology, economics and medical psychiatry. The contributors reveal how Jung's relationship to the phenomenological tradition can be, and is being, developed, and rigorously show that the psychological resonance of the world is immediately available for phenomenological description.
