Book Synopsis Writing Rape, Writing Women in Early Modern England by : J. Catty
Download or read book Writing Rape, Writing Women in Early Modern England written by J. Catty and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word 'rape' today denotes sexual appropriation; yet it originally signified the theft of a woman from her father or husband by abduction or elopement. In the early modern period, its meaning is in transition between these two senses, while rapes and attempted rapes proliferate in literature. This age also sees the emergence of the woman writer, despite a sexual ideology which equates women's writing with promiscuity. Classical myths, however, associate women's story-telling with resistance to rape. This comprehensive study of rape and representation considers a wide range of texts drawn from prose fiction, poetry and drama by male and female writers, both canonical and non-canonical. Combining close attention to detail with an overview of the period, it demonstrates how the representation of gender-relations has exploited the subject of rape, and uses its understanding of this phenomenon to illuminate the issues of sexual and discursive autonomy which figure largely in women's texts of the period.

Download or read book Other Voices, Other Views written by Helen Ostovich and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The debate over canon represented by this book is implicit in the broad range of its contents. As a whole, it argues for expansion: the inclusion of other voices to augment the standard university syllabus for the early modern period, urging recognition of the period's diversity and reforming the conditions under which we pass judgment on its culture." "Each of these essays reveals the literary potential of works that have been considered inferior and inappropriate for serious study. While such individual discovery is certainly valuable, what is even more interesting is their significance as a group. All the essays contained here are engaged in opening texts up to different perspectives, creating a canon that speaks of diversity rather than uniformity."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis The Fair Maid of the West by : Thomas Heywood
Download or read book The Fair Maid of the West written by Thomas Heywood and published by Methuen Publishing. This book was released on 1986 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Heywood (1574?-1641), a professional English actor and one of the most prolific playwrights of the seventeenth century, is most famous for his plays written about contemporary English life. "The Fair Maid of the West" recalls typical Elizabethan bourgeois literature, but its primary relationship is with all adventure narratives regardless of their era. This romantic comedy features vivid pictures of English seaport life and travel to exotic locales by English sea captains. The plot is filled with pirate battles, a shipwreck, courageous adventures, and devoted love. If boredom is the perennial disability of men, adventure stories are the perennial therapy, operating as a restorative by encouraging an intermission in the ordinary powers and interests of the mind.
