Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this book is to analyze prominent literary images of Delhi in post-independence India. The author has probed into a number of eminent writings in Hindi, English and other languages. The author's methodology, a humanistic and phenomenological approach, allows exploration of experiential dimension of writers’ and their characters in various genres of literature. An inquiry into perceptions and imagination in literature enriches the understanding of place, space, time, and seasons, the concerns central to geography. The Perceptions of the metropolis of Delhi interestingly vary between authors and their characters. The images of Delhi in plethora of literary works show a wide spectrum of colors. The images evoke feelings of reverence, love, adoration, dislike, indifference or neutrality. Experiences vary from places of beauty and grandeur to utterly ugly environments. Natives express different views and attitudes toward the city of Delhi from those of expatriate writers.

Book excerpt: Expeditions led by John Cleves Symmes in 1788 brought the first settlers to the Delhi area. But the township really came to life in 1817, when the Ohio legislature passed a bill to name the area "Del High." There are many speculations about the origin of this name, but the true answer has been lost to history. Many farms sprouted up in Delhi, as well as nearly 60 greenhouses, but only about a half-dozen remain today. As the greenhouses and farms grew, so did the population. Schools, churches, and businesses were built, and in 1829, the Sisters of Charity was established. Residents of Delhi survived the Cholera epidemic of the mid-19th century and three major tornadoes. Delhi citizens are devout, and many continue to live in the same area in which they were born.

Book excerpt: Beato’s Delhi offers a pictorial history of Delhi, brought vividly to life through the visual virtuosity of Felice A. Beato, the famous nineteenth-century photographer who came to India to record the last embers of the 1857 ‘Mutiny’, and Jim Masselos who, in 1997, retraced Beato’s footsteps and photographed the same sites as far as possible. By the time Beato reached Delhi in January 1858, the British had already subdued the city, so he could not record the military campaign itself. However, his lens was perhaps the first to capture the battleground and other places of note in that campaign, providing for posterity some unique views of Old Delhi before substantial parts of it were demolished in the aftermath of 1857, or radically redeveloped as the years progressed. Beato’s luminous views are juxtaposed with Masselos’s present-day photographs of the bustling metropolis, shedding light on how the face of Delhi has transformed in the intervening 154 years. Supplemented with an illuminating text by Masselos and Narayani Gupta, Beato’s Delhi is a moving testament to the resilience of this ever-evolving city.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is augmented by an interactive website called NEODELHI.NET. During research trips to Delhi and Gurgaon between 2008 and 2015 the author produced a multi-media urban archive that includes full color photos, an essay film, ethnographic videos, field notes and more pertaining to the arguments and ideas presented in this book. The reader is encouraged to actively engage the website along-side this text. This book challenges the prevailing metro-centric view of globalization. Cities are a crucial part of the infrastructure of globalization, yet in the so-called "developing" world, cities have largely been excluded as "structurally irrelevant" to the functioning of the global urban economy. Kalyan presents a trans-disciplinary exploration of the manifold possibilities and challenges that confront a 'globalizing' megacity like New Delhi. Combining theoretical scholarship, ethnographic exploration, archival research and textual and visual analysis, the book foregrounds complex urban dynamics in and around the region and raises critical questions about changing urban life for postcolonial cities across the Global South. Kalyan employs methodological approaches from political economy, urban studies and visual culture to render a vivid portrait of changing urban life in India's largest conurbation, The book will be of interest to students and scholars of urban studies, postcolonial studies, and inter-disciplinary studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northeast border region of India is a crossroads of Southeast Asia, where India meets China and the Himalayas, and home to many ethnic minorities from across the continent. The area is also the birthplace of a number of secessionist and insurgent movements and a hotbed of political fervor and violent instability. In this trailblazing new study, Duncan McDuie-Ra observes the everyday lives of the thousands of men and women who leave the region every year to work, study, and find refuge in Delhi. He examines how new migrants navigate the rampant racism, harassment, and even violence they face upon their arrival in Delhi. But McDuie-Ra does not paint them simply as victims of the city, but also as contributors to Delhi's vibrant community and increasing cosmopolitanism. India's embrace of globalization has created employment opportunities for Northeast migrants in many capitalistic enterprises: shopping malls, restaurants, and call centers. They have been able to create their own “map” of Delhi and their own communities within the larger and often unfriendly one of the metropolis.

Book excerpt: - Dialects of Silence is one photographers quest to seek Delhis deserted soul during four months of the lockdown as a pandemic ravaged the world Parul Sharma has caught a unique moment in Indian history, producing a startling portfolio of a locked-down, masked, visored, sanitized, padlocked and disinfected Delhi, almost empty of its people and taken over by bored jawans and preening monkeys. Never has the Indian capital looked so unfamiliar, or so surreal." - William Dalrymple Dialects of Silence is one photographer's quest to seek Delhi's deserted soul during four months of the lockdown as a pandemic ravaged the world. Look closer. We see a woman daring out in the city she calls home, capturing the haunting beauty of its historic buildings, sharing the grief of its Covid victims, and celebrating its vitality and courage. She took thousands of photographs and Dialects of Silence is born out of her intimate conversations with one of the world's greatest cities during those terrifying moments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outer world keeps disturbing our inner. If something bad happens to us we react, we get angry and feel depressed. There is not a single day that we are at peace. Our ego gets wounded very easily. We don’t know in life in which direction we should go. Our life is full of tension and worry. To get out of this tension and worry we watch television, chat with our friends over the mobile, spend time on internet surfing, visit some mall, movie theatre and dine, go on holidays within country or abroad, smoke and drink with friends or alone, engage in sexual activities, attend some party, pray or visit holy places with false self, read some book, keep working for more and more money. Again after some time the tension and worry in some other form surfaces. We repeat the same chorus of act again to get out of this. We get old but the tension and worry are still there. What is the way out of this? People fight with each other on trivial issues in home, office or outside. Every day there is violence in some part of the world. There is terror attack or there is some crime happening. Newspapers are full of these kinds of news. Violence has become an incurable disease. Aim of writing this book is to understand the role of peace in our daily living and thereby making world violence free. This book is full of life discussions which lead you to understand your false self and once the false self is understood, true self automatically flows in. The language of book has been kept simple for better understanding.
