Book Synopsis The Mediatization of the Artist by : Rachel Esner
Download or read book The Mediatization of the Artist written by Rachel Esner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers trans-historical and trans-national perspectives on the image of “the artist” as a public figure in the popular discourse and imagination. Since the rise of notions of artistic autonomy and the simultaneous demise of old systems of patronage from the late eighteenth century onwards, artists have increasingly found themselves confronted with the necessity of developing a public persona. In the same period, new audiences for art discovered their fascination for the life and work of the artist. The rise of new media such as the illustrated press, photography and film meant that the needs of both parties could easily be satisfied in both words and images. Thanks to these “new” media, the artist was transformed from a simple producer of works of art into a public figure. The aim of this volume is to reflect on this transformative process, and to study the specific role of the media themselves. Which visual media were deployed, to what effect, and with what kind of audiences in mind? How did the artist, critic, photographer and filmmaker interact in the creation of these representations of the artist’s image?

Download or read book Fulgurations written by Béatrice Adam and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-10-10 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a courageous opening of photographic self-observation to the other, the works of the two photographers-JiniAfonso and Natalia Zavialova-allow participation in the search for the self. With the juxtaposition and confrontation of the two oeuvres, the exhibition and catalogue create a nexus that leads to fulgurations in the communication of the photographs-electrical short circuits between the images, the photographers and the viewer. The resulting newness, a temporary third, makes us aware of the subcutaneous connections with ourselves, both as a reflection and as a pictorially emotional experience.

Download or read book The Imaginary: Word and Image written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imaginary as a critical concept originated in the twentieth century and has been theorized in diverse ways. It can be understood as a register of thought; the way we interpret the world; the universe of images, signs, texts, and objects of thought. In this volume, it is explored as it manifests itself in encounters between the verbal and the visual. A number of the essays brought together here explore the transposition of the imaginary in illustrations of texts and verbal renditions of images, as well as in comic books based on paintings or on verbal narratives. Others analyze ways in which books deal with film or television and investigate the imaginary in digital media. Special attention is paid to the imaginary of places and the relationship of the imaginary with memory. Written in English and French, these contributions by European and American scholars demonstrate the various concerns and approaches characteristic of contemporary scholarship in word and image studies.
Book Synopsis Dada and Beyond, Volume 2 by : Elza Adamowicz
Download or read book Dada and Beyond, Volume 2 written by Elza Adamowicz and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International, iconoclastic, inventive, born out of the institutionalised madness of the First World War, Dada erupted in cities throughout Europe and the USA, creating shock waves that offended polite society and destabilised the cultural and political status quo. In spite of its sporadic and ephemeral character, its rich and diverse legacy is still powerfully felt nearly a century later. Following on from Dada and Beyond Volume 1: Dada Discourses, the sixteen essays in this collection provide critical examinations of Dada, placing particular emphasis on the ongoing impact of its creative output. The chapters examine its pivotal figures as well as its more peripheral protagonists, their different geographic locations, and the extraordinary diversity of their practices that included poetry, painting, printmaking, dance, performance, theatre, textiles, readymades, photomontage and cinema. As the book’s authors reveal, Dada not only anticipates Surrealism but also foreshadows an extraordinary array of more recent tendencies including action painting, conceptual art, outsider art, performance art, environmental and land art. In its privileging of chance and automatism, its rejection of formal artistic institutions, its subversive exploitation of mass media and its constant self-reconstitution and self-redefinition, Dada deserves to be seen as a cultural phenomenon that is still powerfully relevant in the twenty-first century.

Book Synopsis Studies in Arthurian Illustration Vol I by : Alison Stones
Download or read book Studies in Arthurian Illustration Vol I written by Alison Stones and published by Pindar Press. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alison Stones has taught History of Art and Architecture in the USA since 1969 and has enjoyed Visiting Fellowships at the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Paris. She is a specialist in illuminated manuscripts, co-authoring Les Manuscrits de Chretien de Troyes (1993), The Pilgrim's Guide to Santiago de Compostela, A Critical Edition (1998), and writing Le Livre d'images de Madame Marie (Paris, BNF n.a.fr. 16251) (1997), and Gautier de Coinci, Miracles, Music and Manuscripts (2006). Her four-volume study, Manuscripts Illuminated in France, Gothic Manuscripts 1260-1320 was published in 2013 and 2014. Her research has been supported by the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Philosophical Society, the Fulbright Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. She is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, a Correspondant etranger honoraire of the Societe nationale des Antiquaires de France and a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. These two volumes collect and update Professor Stones's papers on Arthurian manuscript illustration, one of her continuing passions. These essays explore aspects of the iconography of the romances of Chretien de Troyes in French verse, the lengthy Lancelot-Grail romance in French prose, and other versions of the chivalrous exploits of King Arthur's knights - the best-sellers of the Middle Ages. Illustrated copies of these romances survive in huge numbers from the early thirteenth century through the beginnings of print, and were read for their text and their pictures throughout the French-speaking world. Of special interest is the cultural context in which these popular works were made and disseminated, by scribes and artists whose work encompassed all kinds of books, for patrons whose collecting was wide-ranging, including secular books alongside works of liturgical and devotional interest.

Book Synopsis Lire Les Images, Voir Les Textes by : Louise Maurer
Download or read book Lire Les Images, Voir Les Textes written by Louise Maurer and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume are situated in French and Australian contexts and focus on texts linking language and visual images. There is an emerging debate in universities concerning the interpretation of images, whether in the field of aesthetics, politics or technology. The contributors focus on images ranging from photography to maps, films, paintings and computer games. In addition they consider relations between genders and nations, as understood in particular historical or semiological contexts. Geographic and disciplinary boundaries are consciously transgressed and blurred, so that a new interdisciplinary dialogue between written texts and visual arts emerges.

Book Synopsis Ingardeniana III by : Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka
Download or read book Ingardeniana III written by Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the footsteps of Ingardeniana II, this volume marks the 20th anniver sary of Roman Ingarden's death, partly focusing upon his thought, partly bringing his aesthetics into the present-day framework of research. It might have appeared puzzling to the followers of our Analecta Husserliana why within the original horizon encircled by the research work of our International Society of Phenomenology and Literatur- whose research work is devised in a diametrically opposed direction to that of Roman Ingarden - there is steadfastly running through our discussions a line of Ingardenian reflection. The reason, as I have pointed out in the introduction to Ingardeniana II, expertly edited by Hans Rudnik, is clear: Ingarden's analysis of the intentional structures of works of art offers in its distinct and clear-cut forms an 'objective' correlate - as well as a point of reference - to the vast conundrum of issues concerning the creative endeavor of the writer, poet, artist in their struggle to endow life with its specifically human significance; a conundrum that in our research we are trying to disentangl- elucidating its mysterious ramifications, their sources and dynamic virtualities. As a matter of fact, Ingarden's thought, newly interpreted and originally expanded, occupies a legitimate place in the present collec tion. We find here, in the first place, an original expansion of Ingarden's aesthetic theory in the monograph of ladwiga Smith followed by the essays of Wadaw Osadnik, Yushiro Takei and Charles Rzepka.
Book Synopsis Point, Dot, Period… The Dynamics of Punctuation in Text and Image by : Laurence Petit
Download or read book Point, Dot, Period… The Dynamics of Punctuation in Text and Image written by Laurence Petit and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Point, Dot, Period… The Dynamics of Punctuation in Text and Image is a collection of twelve previously unpublished essays which explore the fundamental role played by punctuation in the two semiotic fields of text and image. Whilst drawing upon a wide range of material, including painting, engraving, photography, video art, poetry, fiction, and journalism, each essay contributes to the exploration of singular uses of punctuation which highlight the complexity of what remains in all cases a silent, and yet particularly eloquent, mode of expression. By bringing together authors from a variety of fields, such as linguistics, literary studies, and art criticism, at a time when the relation between text and image occupies a prominent place in the critical landscape, this volume offers new insights into the possibility and nature of their encounter, and invites the reader to focus on the material aspect of visual and textual creation. This collection also offers an original approach to the works of some major artists and canonical authors, whilst simultaneously making room for emerging talents.
