Johnston's deftly expresses how lonely and isolating depression can be for sufferers. Poignant and humorous in equal measure.' It was Winston Churchill who popularized the phrase Black Dog to describe the bouts of depression he experienced for much of his life. Book excerpt: Sisterhood is forever…whether you like it or not. Prep meets Girls in White Dresses in Genevieve Sly Crane’s deliciously addictive, voyeuristic exploration of female friendship and coming of age that will appeal to anyone who has ever been curious about what happens in a sorority house. Twinsets and pearls, secrets and kinship, rituals that hold sisters together in a sacred bond of everlasting trust. Certain chaste images spring to mind when one thinks of sororities. But make no mistake: these women are not braiding each other’s hair and having pillow fights—not by a long shot. What Genevieve Sly Crane has conjured in these pages is a blunt, in-your-face look behind the closed doors of a house full of contemporary women—and there are no holds barred. These women have issues: self-inflicted, family inflicted, sister-to-sister inflicted—and it is all on the page. At the center of this swirl is Margot: the sister who died in the house, and each chapter is told from the points of view of the women who orbit her death and have their own reactions to it. With a keen sense of character and elegant, observant prose, Crane details the undercurrents of tension in a world where perfection comes at a cost and the best things in life are painful—if not impossible—to acquire: Beauty. A mother’s love. And friendship…or at least the appearance of it. Woven throughout are glimmers of the classical myths that undercut the lives of women in Greek life. After all, the Greek goddesses did cause their fair share of destruction….

Book Synopsis Functional Laws of Psychodynamics by : E. Szekely
Download or read book Functional Laws of Psychodynamics written by E. Szekely and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph describes the background, conduct, and outcome of part of a long-term project of research into the fundamental processes of psychodynamics. It was first theorized and then shown empirically that such research can lead to the formulation of certain general laws and lawful patterns in psychodynamics. Stated at higher levels of conceptualization, these formulations enable us to explain systemati cally the diverse configurations, effects, and intricacies of dynamic systems in psycho logical functioning. At the same time, the research reported here was intended to con tribute to ongoing efforts to secure a proper base for the study and management of intrapsychic, or inner functional, factors in health and illness. This research project has called for concerted inquiry into psychodynamics along a number of dimensions-theoretical, empirical, methodological, clinical, analytic, qualitative, quantitative, and statistical. The clinical programs required intensive inves tigations, such as in-depth psychodiagnostic examination or psychotherapeutic treat ment of individual patients as well as of nonpatient volunteers. The former were drawn from a large number of patients seen in various settings over several years, whereas the latter were selected from a group of university student volunteers.
Book Synopsis Feelings of Being by : Matthew Ratcliffe
Download or read book Feelings of Being written by Matthew Ratcliffe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feelings of Being is the first ever account of the nature, role and variety of 'existential feelings' in psychiatric illness and in everyday life. There is a great deal of current philosophical and scientific interest in emotional feelings. However, many of the feelings that people struggle to express in their everyday lives do not appear on standard lists of emotions. For example, there are feelings of unreality, surreality, unfamiliarity, estrangement, heightened existence, isolation, emptiness, belonging, significance, insignificance, and the list goes on. Ratcliffe refers to such feelings as 'existential' because they comprise a changeable sense of being part of a world In this book, Ratcliffe argues that existential feelings form a distinctive group by virtue of three characteristics: they are bodily feelings, they constitute ways of relating to the world as a whole, and they are responsible for our sense of reality. He explains how something can be a bodily feeling and, at the same time, a sense of reality and belonging. He then explores the role of altered feeling in psychiatric illness, showing how an account of existential feeling can help us to understand experiential changes that occur in a range of conditions, including depression, circumscribed delusions, depersonalisation and schizophrenia. The book also addresses the contribution made by existential feelings to religious experience and to philosophical thought.

Download or read book The Human Pool written by Chris Petit and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic and hauntingly topical geopolitical thriller spanning six decades and three continents, The Human Pool confirms the journalist and award-winning filmmaker Chris Petit as the heir to John le Carré and Robert Harris. THE HUMAN POOL Rumors about Willi Schmidt's actions during the Second World War were enigmatic, to say the least. He worked for U.S. Intelligence out of Switzerland; he cut black-market deals on the side; he rescued scores of Jews from the Nazis. Saint or sinner? Either way, Schmidt was strictly murky waters -- and reports of his death in 1945 surprised no one. Sixty years later, Joe Hoover is convinced Schmidt is still alive, armed with a false name and a fortune in pharmaceuticals. For years, Hoover, former Intelligence courier for the American spymaster Allen Dulles, has been haunted by misgivings about his own wartime role in his boss's top-secret financial partnership with the Third Reich. Now, someone wants Hoover dead. Back in Europe, Hoover discovers that operations he thought had ended long ago are still being played out. Forming an uneasy alliance with Vaughan, an undercover journalist investigating neo-Nazi traffic of Kurdish refugees, he begins to unravel a conspiracy that leads deep into his past, to his days mixing with Nazi officers in the supposedly neutral cities of Zurich, Istanbul, and Budapest, where enemies did deals over cocktails. At each step, Hoover finds the shadow of Willi Schmidt and the specter of World War II's most grotesque and enduring legacy -- a trade in people: the human pool. Set against a vivid historical backdrop, The Human Pool mixes fiction and fact to explosive effect. Chris Petit has crafted his finest novel yet -- a cosmopolitan, thinking-person's thriller that turns the world inside out and traces its veins: It spells nothing less than the rebirth of the great espionage novel.

Download or read book Depression written by Ernest Keen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-01-30 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most studies of depression focus on the psychiatric or medical interpretation of the experience. Sadness and guilt are human experiences, Keen argues, not disease symptoms. They involve the intricate layers of enacting a style for others, of coping with moral crises, and enduring disappointment. Depression tells us of life and death, good and evil, but not sickness and health. Keen begins with human consciousness, in contrast to the non-reflective consciousness of animals. It becomes clear that the social meanings of being depressed complicate and may even obscure the experiences of sadness and guilt that must be lived through and survived in human depression. The uniquely human and moral content is highlighted; the dysfunction of disease is demystified. Of particular interest to practitioners, professors, and students involved with psychology.

Book Synopsis In Our Words by : Markus Reuber MD, PhD, FRCP
Download or read book In Our Words written by Markus Reuber MD, PhD, FRCP and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-28 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES) can cause blackouts, collapses, involuntary movements, loss of memory and have major impact on quality of life. Whereas epilepsy is caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain, PNES are psychological-based responses to triggers inside or outside the body that are perceived as threatening by the person affected. PNES are poorly understood by the medical community. It is common for doctors to struggle to explain this diagnosis, which can leave their patients frustrated and confused. Often people are told that their PNES are caused by "stress" and sent away with no further support or advice. It is no wonder that those affected feel isolated, abandoned and hopeless about living with the condition. In Our Words: Personal Accounts of Living with Non-Epileptic Seizures shows those diagnosed with PNES that they are not alone, and how others have courageously managed to come to terms with their seizures. These heartfelt personal accounts will also allow family, friends, healthcare providers and researchers to gain more understanding of the condition and work to provide a better quality of life to those living with PNES.
