Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of Old English Literature, Vol. 2 Hugh holland, the author of the ensuing poem, was also the writer of fourteen lines, such as were then considered a sonnet, on the death of Shakespeare, and on the publication of the folio, 1623. They are conceited, and have little merit. Nearly the same criticism may be offered upon the succeeding poem, though it certainly displays more talent and cleverness, but the whole fabric is violent and unnatural; and reading the prefixed eulogiu'm by Ben Jonson (unknown to the editors of his works, and never republished by himself) we wonder at the manner in which, even in the partiality of friendship, he brought himself to speak so extravagantly of Holland's powers Ben Jonson only terms Shakespeare the sweet swan of Avon but Holland, according to him, was the sweet swan of nearly every river in Europe: and we almost wonder that, in the ex cess of his hyperbole, he did not carry him over the Atlantic to the Amazons and the Orinoco. We surmise that Holland was rich, and we know that Ben Jonson was poor, and we recollect no earlier effort of the kind by the learned and inspired brick layer. In its way it is admirable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bookman Illustrated History of English Literature, Vol. 2 of 2: Pope to Swinburne Wherever God erects a house of prayer, The devil always builds a chapel there. In a preface, which is a model of clear and forcible writing, Defoe disclaims metrical correctness and explains his object, which is to convince his countrymen of the expediency of living up to their reputation of being good-natured, and to point out the absurdity of the English, who were a nation of mongrels compounded of the off-scourings of Europe in all ages, posing as a pure and ancient race and despising foreigners as such. What they are to-day, we were yesterday, and to-morrow they will be like us. Defoe made a thousand pounds by this artful lampoon on his fellow-countrymen, and was astonished by its success, which had had no parallel since the appearance of Hudibras. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of Old English Literature, Vol. 1 IN spite of the progress of the Reformation, and the positive injunctions of the public authorities, it appears that the Citizens of London were long averse to the publication and reading of the Bible in English within the limits of their jurisdiction. The consequence was that they incurred the hostility of all the friends of the pending change in religion, and various works were pub lished against them. One of these, and certainly one of the most virulent, is reprinted in the following sheets: it is by a member of the Reformed Church, who was probably resident abroad for greater security; and it seems probable that it was printed either at Nuremberg, or at some other foreign town, where the typographer could not be reached: it bears the date of 1548, but is in all respects anonymous, and we are not aware that it has been suggested that any particular individual was the writer of it. The obstinacy of the city upon the point, whether the Scrip tures should or should not be read in English, had not, of course, been overcome when' Queen Elizabeth came to the throne and on the lst January 1559, she was obliged to give commandment to the Lord Mayor and Aldermen, that in every parish church within the boundary of London the parson or curate should read theepistle and the gospel of the day in the English tongue: Stow, whose authority we are quoting (annales, p. 1075, edit. Adds that the order was observed in most parish churches of the city; but he does not inform us that such was the case in all, as he probably would have done had there been no exceptions. The writer in our hands is very bold and unmeasured in his denunciations, especially against the magnates of the city; and threatens, in another work, to expose their names, if they did not abandon the gross vices of which he accuses them. We do not know whether he was driven to this extremity. In the course of his work he inserts many particulars, reli gions, historical and local, some new, and others well known. He mentions Standish, Frith, etc., by name; and the sale of pardons in Lombard Street, which is likened to the sale of pies in Soper Lane (now called Queen Street), is a curious topographical illustration. The author's style of writing is not unfrequently, as with his polemical contemporaries, a mixture of the familiar with the forcible; and the positions are elaborately supported by scrip tural quotations and allusions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of English Literature: First Year Course It has very often come into my mind what wise men there formerly were throughout England, belonging both to sacred and secular orders, llld how happy were the times then throughout England; and how the kings who had power over the people in those days obeyed God and his ministers; and how they preserved both their peace and their morals and their rule at home, and also enlarged their country and how they sped both in war and wisdom; and also how eager the ecclesiastical orders were both in teaching and learning, and in all the services they had to perform to God and how wisdom and learning were sought in this land from without, and how we should have to obtain them now front abroad if we had to acquire them. So com pletely had learning fallen away in England that there were very few on this side of Humber who could understand their church services in English, or indeed translate a letter from Latin into English and I think there were not many beyond Humber. So few of them were there that I cannot bethink me of a single one south of the Thames when I came to the throne. God be thanked that we have any supply of teachers now. When I remembered this, then I wondered very, very much at the good and wise men who formerly lived throughout England and had learned all books thoroughly, because they did not desire to translate any part of them into their own tongue. But then I soon answered myself and said, They did not think that men would ever be so careless in teaching, and learning so decayed; of set purpose they neglected to do so, and desired that there might be more wisdom in the land, the more languages we knew. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature, an Illustrated Record, Vol. 2 of 4: From the Age of Henry VIII to the Age of Milton When the Greeks spoke of Homer, they did not always name him. They said the poet, certain that no vestige of doubt could exist as to the application of the description. Englishmen might thus speak of Shakespeare with no less security from misapprehension. In a literature eminent beyond most for the multitude of its great poets, many of whom may have excelled Shake speare in this or that branch of art, not one could be selected as a possible rival to Shakespeare, and for this plain reason, that their excellence is par ticular, and his is universal. There is nothing within the compass of poetry in which he has not either achieved supremacy or shown that supremacy lay within his power; there is no situation of human fortune or emotion of the human bosom for which he has not the right word; if he cannot be described as of imagination all compact, it is only because his observation is still more extraordinary. His art is as consummate as his genius, and save when he wrote or planned in haste, impeccable. Infallibility may equally be predicated of the other two supreme poets of the world, Homer and Dante, but the restriction of their spheres forbids any claim to Shakespeare's distinguishing characteristic of universality. The knowledge, and by consequence the sym pathy, of their periods was narrow in comparison with his he was in contact with a thousand things of which they had no cognisance; while, since Shake Speare's day, human interests and activities have so greatly multiplied that, unless civilisation should retrograde, the occurrence of another universal poet may well be deemed impossible. This overawing vastness of Shakespeare renders it almost impossible to obtain a point of view from which he can be contemplated as a whole. The critic will do best to gradually wind into his subject by a recital of the ordinary, and in Shakespeare's case the obscure, circumstances of ancestry and parentage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature, Vol. 2 of 4: An Illustrated Record; From the Age of Henry VIII to the Age of Milton The historical treatment of epochs so contrasted cannot be exactly the same. The chief divergence will be found in the slighter notice accorded to inferior writers who would have been welcome, if they had come sooner, and the ample space devoted to those who have made the British literature of the age European, especially its two pre-eminent representatives, Bacon and Shakespeare. This volume, to the end of the chapters on Shakespeare, is written by the author of vol. I., and thence to the conclusion by the author of vols iii. And iv. The writers desire to record their obligations for literary assistance to Mr. A. W. Pollard and Mr. A. H. Bullen, and for aid in the department of illustration to Mrs. Christie - Miller, of Britwell Park to Mrs. Sydney Pawling to R. R. Holmes, Esq, King's Libra rian, Windsor Castle; and to S. This book was released on 1971-07-02 with total page 1698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 2 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.
