Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes, in summary form, the current National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) system and the scientific rationale used to develop specifications for the next generation of satellites of this series. The payload instruments of the current satellites are reviewed in conjunction with the products prepared from their data outputs. The rationale used by the National Weather Service (NWS) in developing top-level requirements for GOES-Next stresses the projected use of data within the restructured NWS organization expected in the 1990's. NOAA-certified requirements used by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to develop the Request for Proposal, issued to industry in June 1984, are also provided. Finally, a brief description of the satellite system that will be built for launch in the 1990's is provided. This final section has been abstracted from the winning proposal submitted by Ford Aerospace and Communications Corporation and is a glimpse at what the future has in store for GOES. (Author).

Book excerpt: The GOES-R Series: A New Generation of Geostationary Environmental Satellites introduces the reader to the most significant advance in weather technology in a generation. The world’s new constellation of geostationary operational environmental satellites (GOES) are in the midst of a drastic revolution with their greatly improved capabilities that provide orders of magnitude improvements in spatial, temporal and spectral resolution. Never before have routine observations been possible over such a wide area. Imagine satellite images over the full disk every 10 or 15 minutes and monitoring of severe storms, cyclones, fires and volcanic eruptions on the scale of minutes. Introduces the GOES-R Series, with chapters on each of its new products Provides an overview of how to read new satellite images Includes full-color images and online animations that demonstrate the power of this new technology

Volume 1 written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The GOES-N study consisted of five distinct tasks including: determining replication costs of GOES I-M and GOES-7 in the GOES-N time frame; defining and evaluating modifications to GOES I-M to improve efficiency or reduce costs; and defining evolutionary changes to the GOES I-M design to satisfy National Weather Service (NWS) 1983 and NOAA 1989 requirements. The categorization and disposition of NOAA requirements is reported in volume 1 section 4. Results of the GOES I-M efficiency/cost improvement modifications study are described in Section 7.1. The system concept options 1, 2, and 3 that generally represent the results of the Task 2, 3A, and 3B studies are summarized in Section 7.2. Another result of the GOES-N study, the determination of which NWS 1983 and NOAA 1989 requirements can be met with the three options, is contained in volume 1 section 7. Conclusions and recommendations are covered in volume 1 section 8. Imager, sounder, control system, space environment monitor, search and rescue, weather facsimile, data collection system, and products/process/communications recommendations were extracted from sections 9, 10, and 11. Section 8 also contains conclusions pertaining to programmatic operational satellite issues (prerequisite development strategies, the direct procurement of instruments by the government, protoflight mission, etc.). Sections 9, 10, and 11 address instrument, control system, image/navigation/registration, and other system design considerations and surveys. These sections are supported by the appendices in volume 2. Goddard Space Flight Center NASA-TM-107918, NAS 1.15:107918, PB92-147123 ...

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the mission design of communication satellites. There are many excellent books on orbit mechanics and astrodynamics, but until now there has been no single work that explains the ins and outs of mission design, and explains why things are done the way they are done as well as how they are done. The book will be of interest not only to practising mission analysts, but also to spacecraft systems engineers, spacecraft project managers and to those who wish to employ the unique attributes of geosynchronous spacecraft for useful purposes. At last, an explanation of the ins and outs of mission design is offered in a clear and concise matter. The self-contained reference book utilizes analytical details and illustrations to explain the broad aspects of design and mission operations. This unique approach makes it easier for you to assimilate the necessary information to analyze, plan, and carry out a geosynchronous mission from launch, through orbit transfer and station acquisition, to station-keeping and on-orbit operations. This book will be a useful reference for practising mission analysts, spacecraft systems engineers, project managers and others with a practical interest in the uniqiue attributes of geosynchronous spacecraft.

Book excerpt: The Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with the aid of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), plans to procure the next generation of geostationary operational environmental satellites, called the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites-R series (GOES-R). This series is considered critical to the United States' ability to maintain the continuity of data required for weather forecasting through the year 2028. GAO was asked to (1) assess the status and plans for GOES-R, and (2) evaluate whether NOAA is adequately mitigating key technical and programmatic risks. To do so, GAO analyzed contractor and program data and interviewed officials from NOAA and NASA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn about satellites that affect us every day, how they work, and how we can place and keep them on orbit. Satellite Basics for Everyone presents an introduction and overview to satellites. Its written as clearly and understandably as possible for a wide audience. It provides a learning tool for grade school students. High school and college students can use it for helping them decide on career fields. Its for people with curious minds who want to know about satellites that affect their daily lives. And, it provides a training tool and an overview for people who build, operate, and use data collected by satellites. Satellite Basics for Everyone describes satellite missions, orbits, population, closeness, debris, collision risk, builders, owners, operators, launch vehicles, and costs. Focus then turns to describing the orbit, components, environment, and operation of the geostationary communications satellite because it affects our daily lives the most by providing television, radio, commercial business, Internet and telephone services. A description of satellite motion prepares for the included Mission Planning Example of how to place and keep this satellite on orbit and keep the antennas pointing in the right direction to perform its mission. The main objective of this book is to stimulate a broad interest in engineering and science.
