Geography should be learned chiefly from maps, and the child should begin the study by learning “the meaning of map,” and how to use it. These subjects are well fitted to form an attractive introduction to the study of Geography: some of them should awaken the delightful interest which attaches in a child’s mind to that which is wonderful—incomprehensible. The Map lessons should lead to mechanical efforts, equally delightful. It is only when presented to the child for the first time in the form of stale knowledge and foregone conclusions that the facts taught in these lessons appear dry and repulsive to him. An effort is made in the following pages to treat the subject with the sort of sympathetic interest and freshness which attracts children to a new study. A short summary of the chief points in each reading lesson is given in the form of questions and answers. Easy verses, illustrative of the various subjects, are introduced, in order that the children may connect pleasant poetic fancies with the phenomena upon which “Geography” so much depends. It is hoped that these reading lessons may afford intelligent teaching, even in the hands of a young teacher. The first ideas of Geography—the lessons on “Place”—which should make the child observant of local geography, of the features of his own neighbourhood, its heights and hollows and level lands, its streams and ponds—should be conveyed viva voce. At this stage, a class-book cannot take the place of an intelligent teacher. Industrial Illustrations. - In carrying out this plan we have been engaged for three years past in collecting from all parts of the world industrial pictures - photographs showing machinery in actual operation, and under these we have placed descriptions which give in a few words a clear idea of the process of manufacture. We have distributed these throughout the book in such a way as to identify each industry with some state or country where it is especially prominent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Words and Places: Illustrations of History, Ethnology, and Geography In the lately published collection of Essays and Studies by Members of the English Association, Dr. Henry Bradley begins his essay on English place names by remarking that of the many thousand names on the Ordnance Map of England, some, like Newcastle and Blackwater, have an obvious meaning, and some, like Thames and Helvellyn, have not. "It is natural," he continues, "that curiosity with regard to these enigmatical names should be very widely felt, and the writers who have attempted to satisfy this curiosity are innumerable. Unfortunately nearly everything that has been written on the subject is worthless." But he excepts from this condemnation Canon Isaac Taylor's Names and their Histories, a companion volume to the present book. A yet later and yet more cautious scholar may even class these books as fiction, but whether as fiction or not he must applaud it. In all ages place names have been favourite beasts of the chase. They are noble game, and they have given marvellous sport. They continue to do so, and generation after generation they survive to fascinate and to elude us. Take, for example, the name of Icknield Street. It has long been connected with the tribe of the Iceni who held the land round about its north-eastern terminus, and not many years ago Dr. Edwin Guest, in his Origines Celticae, translated the ancient Icenhilde Weg as "the highway (or military way) of the Iceni." Archaeologists sprang up to show that the Iceni had given their name to several places upon its course. Ickleton was supposed to be Icenton; Icklingham was Iceningham; Ickleford was Icenford. But then appeared Professor Haverfield and Dr. Bradley. Professor Haverfield showed that the Icknield Way could not be satisfactorily traced in Norfolk and Suffolk, the country of the Iceni, and that there were places just as probably named after that tribe in Middlesex, Sussex, and Yorkshire. These places, he affirms, owe their names to English personal names like Icel and Icca. Finally he says: "Nor could either the real name Icenhilde, or the supposed names Iceningham and the like, have grown out of the name Iceni. An incident which occurred on the landing of King Edward VII. 'at Lisbon onxan official visit might Well be remembered. A strip of carpet laid on the muddy quay proved too short, and was supplemented at the last moment by a large Portuguese ag: when 'the King came to the ag of the country he was visiting, he stepped off in the mud rather than trample upon it. The recognition of the ag as the highest expression of the individuality of a country has led to the introduction in the text of numerous illustrations of ags and colonial badges. It is worth suggesting to teachers the preparation of an illustrated geography of the greatest interest by gradually forming an album of picture post-cards, each card being selected to show some characteristic view or scene.
