Download or read book Defectors written by Paola Ramos and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning journalist's deeply reported exploration of how race, identity and political trauma have influenced the rise in far-right sentiment among Latinos, and how this group can shape American politics Democrats have historically assumed they can rely on the Latino vote, but recent elections have called that loyalty into question. In fact, despite his vociferous anti-immigrant rhetoric and disastrous border policies, Trump won a higher percentage of the Latino vote in 2020 than he did in 2016. Now, journalist Paola Ramos pulls back the curtain on these voters, traveling around the country to uncover what motivates them to vote for and support issues that seem so at odds with their self-interest. From coast to coast, cities to rural towns, Defectors introduces readers to underdog GOP candidates, January 6th insurrectionists, Evangelical pastors and culture war crusaders, aiming to identify the influences at the heart of this rightward shift. Through their stories, Ramos shows how tribalism, traditionalism, and political trauma within the Latino community has been weaponized to radicalize and convert voters who, like many of their white counterparts, are fearful of losing their place in American society. We meet Monica de la Cruz, a Republican congresswoman from the Rio Grande Valley who won on a platform centered on finishing “what Donald Trump started” and pushing the Great Replacement Theory; David Ortiz, a Mexican man who refers to himself as a Spaniard and opposed the removal of a statue of a Spanish conquistador in New Mexico; Luis Cabrera, an evangelical pastor pushing to “Make America Godly Again;” Anthony Aguero, an independent journalist turned border vigilante; and countless other individuals and communities that make up the rising conservative Latino population. Cross-cultural and assiduously reported, Defectors highlights how one of America's most powerful and misunderstood electorates may come to define the future of American politics.
Download or read book The Mirage of China written by Xin Liu and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's world is one marked by the signs of digital capitalism and global capitalist expansion, and China is increasingly being integrated into this global system of production and consumption. As a result, China's immediate material impact is now felt almost everywhere in the world; however, the significance and process of this integration is far from understood. This study shows how the a priori categories of statistical reasoning came to be re-born and re-lived in the People's Republic - as essential conditions for the possibility of a new mode of knowledge and governance. From the ruins of the Maoist revolution China has risen through a mode of quantitative self-objectification. As the author argues, an epistemological rift has separated the Maoist years from the present age of the People's Republic, which appears on the global stage as a mirage. This study is an ethnographic investigation of concepts - of the conceptual forces that have produced and been produced by - two forms of knowledge, life, and governance. As the author shows, the world of China, contrary to the common view, is not the Chinese world; it is a symptomatic moment of our world at the present time.
Book Synopsis The Decline of Nation-States after the Arab Spring by : Imad Salamey
Download or read book The Decline of Nation-States after the Arab Spring written by Imad Salamey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveying the causes of the Arab Spring, and revealing the governing trends arising from it, this book examines various international relation theories through the lens of the experiences of the countries in the Middle East and North Africa region. It takes the events of the Arab Spring as an outcome of globalization’s double movement whose integrative cultural, political and security frameworks devastated nationally controlled economies, undermining the nation-state system and propagating a decentralized and communitarian-based governance structure. The consequences for many plural, diverse societies were two-fold: autocratic nationalism was discarded while decentralized regimes representing communitarian-based politics came to the fore. The author reveals how the formulation of a new communitocratic order rests on the accommodation of this newly emerging communitarianism and explores the major drivers of political transformation, describing the emerging communities, forecasting their governing options and the possible repercussions for the post-Arab Spring states.

Book excerpt: War has begun. Skylar Mandolyn, last heir and first queen of Correnth, is still haunted by what happened during her imprisonment. Trying to stay focused on the impending war with Bellumortis, Skylar can’t help but see the shadow of the one who had caused her kingdom’s downfall, only recognizing him by his black-and-cream façade and his chin that drips with blood. Then, Bellumortis attacks, and suddenly the reality and fantasy she’s tried to keep separate becomes the same battleground. Ghosts become real, enemies become haunting, and Skylar begins to realize that this may actually be the end of everything… including herself. For Sir Harlin Brien, war comes easy. As one of Correnth’s knights in the Order of the Benighted, Harlin knows how to destroy the enemy. But what makes this war different is that he’s the only one from the Order who’s there to fight, and for him this battle is personal. It’s not just the queen he’s trying to save, but the woman he’s fallen in love with. With one realm on the verge of collapse and the other on the verge of power, there’s only one person who knows the truth of why this war really started: Madden Calibre, the captured spy. Madden knows where Bellumortis’s hate originates from, because it didn’t start after the deaths of their ambassadors. It started with the birth of Skylar Mandolyn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enhance your Frostgrave campaigns with recurring villains that grow more powerful over time and give your wizards somewhere to hide with expanded rules for bases. On the violent and deadly streets of the Frozen City, feuds and vendettas are commonplace. Wizards may start out focused on discovery and exploration, fighting when necessary for survival or to win possession of some long-lost artefact or grimoire, but such battles can swiftly become intensely personal. Competitors become adversaries and, as the cycle of violence continues, some wizards lose sight of their original goals and focus their efforts on the elimination of their hated foes – their mortal enemies. This supplement for Frostgrave: Fantasy Wargames in the Frozen City presents rules for creating recurring villains in both competitive and solo campaigns. These characters are unique individuals who return over the course of a campaign to plague the players' wizards, gaining experience, recruiting allies, and becoming more deadly with each appearance. Against such threats, a wizard's base becomes as much hideout as headquarters, and an expanded range of options for enhancing bases is provided, as are rules for defending your own... and attacking those of your rivals!

But do Canadians have a spiritual geography- an identity uniquely shaped by their land, their history, their people? This first-of-its-kind collection brings together writings from within the Christian heritage to help Canadians explore that question. The forty-six contributors include award-winning literary figures, religious and political leaders, and social activists from one end of Canada to the other. Their traditions range from evangelical to Catholic, mainline Protestant to Orthodox, Pentecostal to Mennonite. Some still have family connections beyond Canada's borders; others have ancestors who were her long before Europeans came. These writers do not analyze, define, or argue about Christianity in Canada. They simply showcase it through their memoir or poetry, fiction or meditation -mapping into words something of what it means to be Christian in this country. The spiritual landscape they paint is diverse, inspiring, and provocative. It's a colourful dance of words, a wonderful Canadian celebration.

Book Synopsis The Extraordinary Workplace by : Danna Beal
Download or read book The Extraordinary Workplace written by Danna Beal and published by Sentient Publications. This book was released on 2010 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of people, whether leaders or employees, spend three-quarters of their waking hours in energy-depleting environments. Today's workplace is often a web of egos competing for power, managers disempowering employees, and co-workers hurting and sabotaging each other. The troubles within the auto and financial industries are simply extreme examples of what is occurring in many businesses and in government. In a complex, uncertain workplace environment, many feel on the brink, desperate for a way out of their sense of entrapment. This book reveals the source of fear and conflict in organisations and provides the solution for unravelling the complex web of interacting egos. It offers a personal restoration plan that leads to inner security and a path to freedom. As individuals connect with their higher selves, they are rejuvenated and can contribute to transformation in the workplace. This book shows us how to heal the workplace culture by rebuilding relationships to honour our own and others' spirits. When fear is replaced with trust and compassion, a shift in consciousness can occur. The shallow interpretation of ourselves as people who need to battle for power and validation belies our incredible authentic power. You will learn how to: Rebuild relationships throughout organisations; Give up the constraints of the ego and its need for external validation; Replace fear with trust and compassion so people can perform at their best; Build teamwork, co-operation and synergism instead of internal rivalry and competition; Expand productivity, creativity, profitability and enthusiasm of team members; Increase loyalty, respect, retention, and commitment; End power struggles, paranoia, gossip, personal agendas and drama that drain time and money; Develop leaders and managers who have the inner courage and authenticity of great leaders.
