Book excerpt: Adhesive abilities of insects, spiders and reptiles have inspired researchers for a long time. All these organisms show outstanding performance, particularly for force, adhesion and climbing abilities, relative to their size and weight. Scientists have focused on the gecko’s adhesive paw system and climbing abilities. Its adhesion mechanism has been an important topic of research for nearly 150 years. However, certain phenomena of geckos are still not fully understood and represent today the main challenge in several scientific discussions that aim to better understand their adhesive ability. The manuscript deals with the influence of surface roughness on the gecko’s adhesion on the inverted surface of Poly(methyl meth-acrylate) (PMMA) and glass, of PMMA with different surface roughness, on the gecko’s maximum normal adhesive force. In general, the adhesive structure and mechanism of an animal could be connected to the micro-structured roughness of natural substrata (e.g. plant surfaces) in the natural environment. This manuscript focuses on the nanometer scale, which is involved in everything from gecko spatulae to the waxy nanotubules of the lotus leaf, to the fibroin protein materials that constitute spider silks. In general, spider silks display superior mechanical properties, but only in the last few decades, researchers investigated various types of silks and evaluated their very different mechanical properties. The dragline and the flag silks (or radial and circumferential) of orb weaving spiders have been characterized in scientific literature while, to our knowledge, few studies have been conducted on bundles, which connect the cocoons of Meta menardi to the ceiling of caves.

Book excerpt: The difference in the shapes of facial structures and their relationship to one another determines the unique and distinct appearance of each individual. This anatomic information is critical to diagnosing changes in facial topography that occur with age and in determining the best approach for augmenting and rejuvenating the aging face. Facial Topography: Clinical Anatomy of the Face provides a critical roadmap for navigating the underlying anatomy of the face. It is the first work of its type that uses cadaver dissections paired with detailed medical illustrations to depict the soft tissue surface landmarks of the face—shapes, contours, creases, and lines. This beautifully illustrated semi-atlas is packed with clinical information to help improve surgical outcomes. The book places particular emphasis on describing surface landmarks to help predict the location of deeper structures. This knowledge increases the safety of any facial procedure, because the surgeon knows the course and location of blood vessels, muscles, and nerves. The book includes advice on deteriming the best placement of injectables to achieve a predictable and aesthetic result and to avoid complications, and also helps surgeons understand the ideal placement of fillers for facial augmentation. In addition, the basic dissections provide essential information for all residents and practitioners operating in the face. Anatomic tenets are described that can be applied to any anatomic region and key clinical points are highlighted throughout. A supplemental DVD includes video demonstations of dissections and other clinical applications in each anatomic area of the face.

Book excerpt: First published in 1980, Steel-Engraved Book Illustration in England is a detailed and comprehensive survey of the steel engravings that were so popular in the nineteenth century. With an extensive range of illustrations, the book refutes the assumption that steel engravings are of little artistic value or importance, a common attitude rooted largely in the connection between steel engravings and mass-produced books. Beginning with an exploration of the identification problems and early history of steel engravings, it moves through the production and printing of the plates and on to a study of several engravers and artists, as well as of the books themselves. Steel-Engraved Book Illustration in England will appeal to anyone interested in the history of printing and illustration.

Now ideas from statistical physics are being applied in novel ways to inhomogeneous complex systems such as atmospheres and oceans. In this book, the basic ideas of geophysics, probability theory, information theory, nonlinear dynamics and equilibrium statistical mechanics are introduced and applied to large time-selective decay, the effect of large scale forcing, nonlinear stability, fluid flow on a sphere and Jupiter's Great Red Spot. The book is the first to adopt this approach and it contains many recent ideas and results. Its audience ranges from graduate students and researchers in both applied mathematics and the geophysical sciences. It illustrates the richness of the interplay of mathematical analysis, qualitative models and numerical simulations which combine in the emerging area of computational science.
