Out where the skies are a trifle bluer, Out where friendship's a little truer, That's where the West begins. Out where a fresher breeze is blowing, Where there's laughter in every streamlet flowing, Where there's more of reaping and less of sowing. That's where the West begins. Out where the world is in the making, Where fewer hearts in despair are aching, That's where the West begins. Where there's more of singing and less of sighing, Where there's more of giving and less of buying, And a man makes friends without half trying, That's where the West begins. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Life in Illinois In presenting this little book to the public, the author would not dare to claim perfection, for to err is human, but we have sought to give the conditions as they existed in this country in early days, and we have not sought to display style or learning, but we have sought to give the little book the same tone and as near in the same language that we used in early days as prudence will allow, and we will leave the reader to judge of the merits of the little book for himself; and we hope the good people will pardon any errors they may find. We hope you will be interested in the reading of it, and if some thoughts are presented which will prepare the readers the better for the battles of life and for usefulness to others, then we are well repaid for all our trouble. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Totem of Black Hawk: A Tale of Pioneer Days in Northwestern Illinois and the Black Hawk War "Whoa!" and, with a downward thrust of the handle of his long ox whip, Big Tom Clay brought the tired oxen to a welcomed halt. "Martha," and he turned a pair of shining eyes to the woman, who, with a baby in her arms, was seated on the front seat of the huge covered wagon that the weary oxen had been drawing, "Martha - Home!" and his eyes, sweeping the surrounding scene, returned quickly and a bit questioningly to the face of the woman. "Here's the land, right from the hand of God, all waiting for us to make a home on it. I hope it looks as good to you as it does to me. It's the pick of the whole Rock River Valley. Plenty of wood and water, and the soil good enough for a king and ready right now for the plow, without no grubbing out of trees or burning of brush. I reckon 'twon't take us no time to make ourselves mighty comfortable here. It's all that I pictured it, ain't it? You ain't none disappointed, be you?" and a look of affectionate anxiety came into the eyes of the big man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Pioneer Days in La Salle County, Illinois, and Poster Designs Commemorating the Washington Bi-Centennial 1932: By Grammar Grade Pupils of Village and Rural Schools, La Salle County, Illinois As a part of their participation in the celebration of the Washington Bi centennial this year the pupils in the rural and village schools were invited to design posters commemorative of the Father of His Country, and the eighth graders were privileged to try their hand again at telling a story of pioneer days. At the time the invitation was extended, it was expected that at least two hundred of the 1932 posters and stories could be reproduced in pamphlet form. But the financial stringency still continues and it is impossible to realize our expectations. Hence, many an interesting story and many an excellent poster had to be omitted in this pamphlet, much to the chagrin of the county superintendent and, no doubt, to the disappointment of many a worthy pupil. In the estimation of the county superintendent nothing that these smaller schools have done in recent years so definitely marks their praiseworthy ad vancement as the writing of these stories and the designing of these posters, for both are of the creative type that evidence intellectual growth. Likewise, both are on a markedly higher plane than was thought possible for grammar grade pupils only a few years ago. It is ardently hoped, however, that they represent a new era in school achievement, and that they but pave the way to even greater skill in the fine art of story telling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Pioneers and Pioneer Events of the State of Illinois: Including Personal Recollections of the Writer; Of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, and Peter Cartwright, Together With a Brief Autobiography of the Writer I urged upon my uncle the privilege and duty even that rested with and upon him, to put his newspaper and fugi tive writings into final form for book publication, so that they could pass into the permanent literature of the State and not perish. It was easily seen that the terse and oft times quaint statements of facts and events had a peculiar attractiveness of expression of their own, and the honesty and candor that permeate every line of his writings doubly assure a recognition of value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two Circuits: A Story of Illinois Life The next friend says, many of them are underdrawn. So to strike an average, I have left it as originally written. It is in no sense an autobiography. Names and places are mostly fictitious; yet the majority of the incidents are as I, and others saw and heard them. They did not always transpire in the order here given. I had a love for the hardy yeomanry of the ear lier days; for their honest, happy, off-hand man ners, modes of thought and speech. I was at home among them for years, enjoying their labor, humor, privations, pleasures and worship. I have aimed to make the characters original, fresh and alive with the buoyancy and vivacity of pioneer life. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Notes on Pioneer Days in the Dixon Vicinity, 1948, Vol. 1 There were several reasons why people chose to come to the great Illinois country. Some pioneers came west because they loved adventure and new scenes. These were men like Daniel Boone. Some came with the idea of making great profits in the new country. But most of the people came because they saw here an opportunity to buy cheap land, to establish new homes and to, eventually, they thought, give their families a far better living than they could make-back East. Times were very hard in the East, partly because of the panic of 1837. In Europe times were bad because of the number of recent wars. In many of the Eastern states at this time only property owners could vote. Illinois, from earliest days, gave the vote to any man who had lived in the state a year and could pay his county tax. This, too, made for greater independence. When land was sold at per acre, with a minimum of 640 acres, few people could buy it, but shortly afterward the price was lowered to per acre, with the minimum set at 40 acres. At this low figure many could buy enough land for a really large farm. The land along rivers was considered the most desirable since here the settler could find timber, water supply, protection against prairie fires and a source of food fish and game. In our own locality, many of the settlers came with the idea of working in the mines at Galena for a part of the year, or of profiting in some way through the great seasonal migration of people to Galena. Wherever there was a ferry, there must be trade. Travelers must have food and shelter along their way. Many people came to take up land here, realizing that they would not be too isolated with a thriving ferry and important trails nearby. One other great reason influenced many people of the Dixon area. This was the beauty of this locality. Men like Leonard Andrus of Grand Detour, Alexander Charters, Dr. Everett and many later settlers stated that they werecharmed by the beauty before they even thought of its economic possibilities. Excerpt: ... of pioneer 91lUnote Amherst, Mass., June 28, 1870. My Dear Daughter: HENEVER you have expressed a wish that I would write out some of my early western experiences, I have felt an inclination to comply with your request, but ill health and other hindrances have prevented. As writing is not my forte, I do not feel that I can produce anything which will at present interest you much; but my own appreciation of every record left me by my good mother and my dear husband makes me feel that I may leave you something which will interest you in after life, more than at the present time. Although you have spent the greater part of your life at the West, the accumulation of comforts, and the luxuries and improvements forty or fifty years have brought, and which are there so liberally enjoyed, forbid the realization of frontier life to those who have not by stern experience passed through such an ordeal; and though we have many pleasant recollections, I think, as a whole, the retrospect is preferable to the reality. Few would like to again pass through the bitterness for the sake of enjoying the remembrance of the few sweets. Your father's date of western life was three and a half years earlier than mine. He went to Illinois in the spring of 1819, and I did not go until the autumn of 1822. He, of course, had a sterner experience of backwoods life than I had; he also had a stronger development of hope, and a most indomitable energy that carried him through all the disagreeables that came in his way. It is rare to find one so amiable in every relation in his intercourse with the world, both socially and in business transactions, who yet could be so determined and persevering in whatever he undertook to do. His boyhood and early manhood were spent with...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of a Woman Pioneer: As Illustrated in the Life of Elsie Strawn Armstrong, 1789-1871 This little volume was inspired over sixty years ago, when, as a boy of from ten to fifteen years old I was very much impressed by the accounts my grandmother, Elsie Strawn Armstrong, recited to me from time to time of her early life in pioneer days of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois. She called her stanzas poetry and I supposed they ranked well with those of Longfellow and Whittier. I was impressed too, with her ability to recall her lines verbatim if given a word or two to start off on any event of her life story. I also soon learned after she came to live at my father's home that if I wished to play on the grass I must find a place remote from the house, for if seen on the lawn in front of her window, there would be a tap, tap on the glass and I would have to go to her room and sew carpet rags or thread, what seemed to me, a hundred needles. My father instructed me that I must wait on her and run errands for her whenever needed and that seemed to me to be most of the time. Nevertheless I recognized that she was deserving of attention for she was nearly blind when she first came to live with us in 1861, so I served her as cheerfully as a boy of that age could be expected to do. I kept her wood-box filled with firewood, carried out the ashes and worst of all, I had to pull out her stumps of eye-lashes as often as they were long enough to be grasped by the tweezers. I do not recall whether it was her suggestion or my own, that some time, I should publish her rhymes so that her book might be sold in the shops as other books of poetry were. At any rate I carried that intention in mind several years. At last when a complete type-written copy of all her rhymes was prepared by one of my brothers, I thought I would now begin the long deferred task and prepare a copy for the printer, but I soon saw that to correct her English would destroy the rhythm and rhymes. I spent some time trying to do the impossible and then gave it up for another series of years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
