Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Dianas in Somaliland is a narrative of a daring and victorious shooting expedition undertaken by two cousins, Agnes and Cecily, who carry the spirit of true sportswomen and the right attitude for this adventure. A native Somali escort accompanies them during this expedition. British writer and big game hunter Agnes Herbert keep the reader hooked with her refreshing writing style throughout the novel. She wonderfully describes the beauty and austerity of the jungle and desert in the passages as the two ladies travel through the country. The chapters of this book are started with one or more quotations from Shakespeare, thus revealing the author as a high-class Englishwoman of culture. The discussions in the book show that the author is highly skilled with guns. This work beautifully and with great success presents a new perspective of a female British imperialist hunter bagging big game in the isolated jungle of Somaliland and Ethiopia, which is deserving of the reader's interest and attention.

Book Synopsis The Origin and Signification of Scottish Surnames by : Clifford Stanley Sims
Download or read book The Origin and Signification of Scottish Surnames written by Clifford Stanley Sims and published by . This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is hard to imagine life without surnames, but surnames were a rarity before the 11th century. Names originated from localities such as Nisbet and Ralston, baptismal names such as Anderson and Lawrence, trades such as Baxter and Fletcher, offices such as Bannerman and Walker, professions such as Clerk and Kemp, peculiarities of body and/or mind such as Fairfax and Armstrong, armorial bearings such as Cross and Horn, nativity such as Fleming and Scott, and many other sources. Persons that joined a particular clan, regardless of descent, assumed the surname of the chief as an act of loyalty. There are distinctions between Highland and Lowland surnames. Highland surnames are usually patronymic with various prefixes and additions such as Mackenzie and Robertson, but there are also surnames derived from localities, peculiarities, armorial bearings and offices. Lowland surnames show Norman influence, and are generally local, but many surnames are derived from baptismal names, peculiarities, armorial bearings, office, occupation and trade. Entries are arranged alphabetically by surname and include varying amounts of information. A separate section is devoted to Christian names, alphabetically listed, with brief meanings provided.

Book Synopsis The Carmen de Hastingae Proelio of Guy, Bishop of Amiens by : Bishop of Amiens Guy
Download or read book The Carmen de Hastingae Proelio of Guy, Bishop of Amiens written by Bishop of Amiens Guy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-10-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Carmen de Hastingae Proelio is one of the most discussed sources for the Norman Conquest of England. Its authorship and date cannot be established entirely beyond dispute, but the weight of scholarly opinion supports a date of composition of 1068 or earlier, by Guy, bishop of Amiens, thus making it the earliest surviving account. Whatever its date, the Carmen remains a source of intrinsic interest and importance, and one used by some of the great chroniclers of the period, such as Orderic Vitalis. It is an epic poem, concerned with some of the most momentous events of a remarkable year, in which Halley's comet was a disturbing portent of undisclosed disasters. For this second edition, Frank Barlow has written an entirely new and substantial historical introduction, incorporating the scholarly research of a generation. He has also provided a fresh translation and notes, as well as revising the Latin text of the 1972 edition by Catherine Morton and Hope Muntz.
