Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of public procurement regulation is to provide a government with the supplies and works it needs to operate. This primary objective is connected to the principle of value for money, and for the European Union, with the aim of ensuring the functioning of the internal market in public procurement. However, other objectives related to environmental and social concerns have always played a role as well. These range from the award of contracts, to workshops for the disabled, to strict environmental specifications. These 'secondary' or 'horizontal' objectives, also referred to as 'green procurement' or 'social procurement, ' are the subject of this book. The analysis covers the EU internal market law of green and social procurement, with emphasis on the interpretation, implementation, and practice, in a range of Member States of the EU, and includes a comparative study

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together leading international researchers to discuss governmental approaches to analysing social policies. Analysing Social Policy expands the scope of social policy analysis using the insights from post-Foucauldian scholarship on the art of governing in liberal democracies. One of the main conclusions reached is that policy researchers need to pay much greater attention to the minutiae of policy reform, and to the discursive and material ways in which power operates in policy change. The chapters comprising this book are purposefully written in a clear, accessible and reflective manner, with each of the contributions empirically grounded, drawing on social policy problems and practices in many countries, ranging from North America to Europe to Australasia. The editors address key concerns of both policy analysts as well as academic researchers attempting to locate appropriate theoretical frameworks to make sense of welfare state restructuring in the 21st century. This book will appeal to researchers and research students in political science, social policy, social work and sociology through its demonstration of how to apply contemporary social theory to research problems. It will also be of interest to policy scholars around the world who are involved in analysing the intersections of power, politics and policy.

Anheier has fully updated, revised and expanded his comprehensive introduction to this field. The text takes on an international and comparative dimensions perspective, detailing the background and concepts behind these organizations and examining relevant theories and central issues. Anheier covers the full range of nonprofit organizations – service providers, membership organizations, foundations, community groups – in different fields, such as arts and culture, social services and education. He introduces central terms such as philanthropy, charity, community, social entrepreneurship, social investment, public good and civil society, whilst explaining how the field spills over from public management, through nonprofit management and public administration. The previous edition won the Best Book Award at the American Academy of Management in 2006. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, government's primary response to the emergent problems of homelessness, hunger, child abuse, health care, and AIDS has been generated through nonprofit agencies funded by taxpayer money. As part of the widespread movement for privatization, these agencies represent revolutionary changes in the welfare state. Steven Smith and Michael Lipsky demonstrate that this massive shift in funds has benefits and drawbacks. Given the breadth of government funding of nonprofit agencies, this first study of the social, political, and organizational effects of this service strategy is an essential contribution to the current raging debates on the future of the welfare state. Reviews of this book: "An insightful analysis of the implications of an important, broad trend of the past thirty years in the social welfare policy of the United States and many other countries...[Smith and Lipsky] demonstrate that we do not have to read about other countries to find a comparative perspective that sheds light on the choices we face in our national health care debate." DD--Bradford H. Gray, Health Affairs "The most comprehensive account we have of the history, extent, nature, and meaning of delivering social services that are paid for by government and delivered through nonprofit organizations." DD--H. Brinton Milward, Public Administration Review "An interesting, absorbing, and important book." DD--William T. Gormley, Jr., American Political Science Review "An important contribution to welfare state scholarship." DD--Kirsten A. Gronbjerg, Contemporary Sociology
