Book Synopsis Challenging the Mafia Mystique by : Rino Coluccello
Download or read book Challenging the Mafia Mystique written by Rino Coluccello and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sicilian Mafia, or Cosa Nostra, is one of the most intriguing criminal phenomena in the world. It is an unparalleled organised criminal grouping that over almost two centuries has been able not only to successfully permeate licit and illicit economy, politics and civil society, but also to influence and exercise authoritative power over both the underworld and the upper-world. This criminal phenomenon has been a captivating conundrum for scholars of different disciplines who have tried to explain with various paradigms the reasons behind the emergence and consolidation of the mafia. Challenging the Mafia Mystique provides an analysis of the changes the Sicilian mafia has undergone, from legitimisation to denunciation. Rino Coluccello highlights how, from the very emergence of the organised criminal groups in Sicily, a culture existed that was protective and tolerant of the mafia. He argues that the various conceptualisations of the mafia that dominated the public and scientific debate in the nineteenth and more than half of the twentieth century created a mystique, which legitimised the mafia and contributed to their success. This book will be of great interest to scholars and students of organised crime, Italian politics and Italian literature.

Book Synopsis Poussin and French Dynastic Ideology by : Judith E. Bernstock
Download or read book Poussin and French Dynastic Ideology written by Judith E. Bernstock and published by Peter Lang Group Ag, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals that many of Nicolas Poussin's most renowned mythological and biblical paintings were intended as celebrations of the Bourbon monarchy. It now becomes clear that Poussin, long considered the greatest painter of early modern France, was also preeminent in supporting Bourbon claims and in establishing an early, multilayered iconography of absolutism in French painting. His rhetorical techniques for exalting the Bourbons correspond to the endeavours of Louis XIII and Richelieu in exploiting the arts to create a public image of dynastic continuity. Using an approach of cultural history, this book shows that Poussin's art emerges as a fascinating and even witty mirror of seventeenth-century French culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel has often been taken as a metaphor for human life, and the concept of travel and the traveller has varied across centuries, cultural traditions, and social groups. Following a diachronic overview of travel writing, this study considers some of the most important Italian writers of the late nineteenth and twentieth-centuries, such as D’Annunzio, Pirandello, Svevo, with particular focus on their note-books, letters, travel diaries, and reportage. An analysis of this material indicates that these authors collect their miscellaneous notes, in some cases, as private and personal documents, and in other instances to possibly develop future articles, essays or novels. It goes on to focus on the journey par excellence, the trip to America, regarded as an Eden. In many of their works, writers such as Ojetti, Giacosa, Cecchi, Piovene express their ambivalence towards a place often idealized as a land of freedom and opportunity, yet also acknowledged as a land where oppression and violence are all too real. The study attempts to demonstrate how all the traveller-writers discussed “translate” their sense of discovery in their books, and the extent to which that sense affects the conception of each of the texts.
