Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The watercolors by Andrea Ponsi collected in this suggestive "carnet de voyage" through Tuscany are both traditional and innovative; traditional because they are inspired by the representation of the scenery which had its peak in the landscape painting of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; innovative as the atmosphere of the images and the author's accurate descriptions are permeated with a spirit of abstraction of a clear modern character.

Download or read book Andrea del Sarto written by Julian Brooks and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2015-06-23 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great Renaissance artist Andrea del Sarto (1486–1530) rivals Leonardo da Vinci as one of history’s most accomplished draftsmen. Moving beyond the graceful elegance of his contemporaries, such as Raphael and Fra Bartolommeo, he brought unprecedented realism to his drawings through the rough and rustic use of chalk in his powerfully rendered life and compositional studies. With an immediacy few other Renaissance artists possess, del Sarto’s work has proven to be inspirational and compelling to later audiences, with admirers such as Degas and Redon. This lavishly illustrated book reveals del Sarto's dazzling inventiveness and creative process, presenting fifty core drawings on paper together with a handful of paintings. The first publication to look to del Sarto’s working practice through a close examination of his art from across all the world’s major collections, this volume analyzes new studies of his panel underdrawings as well. The depth and breadth of its research make this book an important contribution to the study of del Sarto and Florentine Renaissance workshop practice. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from June 23 through September 13, 2015, and at the Frick Collection in New York from October 6, 2015, though January 10, 2016.
Book Synopsis Piero Di Cosimo by : Dennis Geronimus
Download or read book Piero Di Cosimo written by Dennis Geronimus and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverting rules with obvious relish, Florentine artist Piero di Cosimo (1462–1522) is known today—as he was in his own time—for his highly personal visual language, one capable of generating images of the most mesmerizing oddity. In this book, Dennis Geronimus overcomes the scarcity of information about the artist’s life and works—only one of the nearly sixty known works by Piero is actually signed and dated—and pieces together from extensive archival research the most complete and accurate account of Piero’s life and career ever written. Unfettered imagination was the sign under which Piero exercised his pictorial invention, and yet the complicated artist was also a product of his culture. The book fills gaps in the artist’s biography and provides intensive analysis of Piero’s protean imagery, discusses his various patrons and commissions, and lists his extant, lost, and uncertainly attributed works.

Book Synopsis The Drawings of Bronzino by : Carmen Bambach
Download or read book The Drawings of Bronzino written by Carmen Bambach and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2010 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawings by the great Italian Mannerist painter and poet Agnolo Bronzino (1503-1572) are extremely rare. This important and beautiful publication brings together for the first time nearly all of the sixty drawings attributed to this leading draftsman of the 16th century. Each drawing is illustrated in color, discussed in detail, and shown with many comparative photographs. Bronzino's technical virtuosity as a draftsman and his mastery of anatomy and perspective are vividly apparent in each stroke of the chalk, pen, or brush. The younger generations of Florentine artists particularly admired Bronzino for his technical virtuosity as a painter, and Giorgio Vasari praised him for his powers as a disegnatore (designer and draftsman).
Book Synopsis Emulating Antiquity by : David Hemsoll
Download or read book Emulating Antiquity written by David Hemsoll and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory account of the complex and evolving relationship of Renaissance architects to classical antiquity Focusing on the work of architects such as Brunelleschi, Bramante, Raphael, and Michelangelo, this extensively illustrated volume explores how the understanding of the antique changed over the course of the Renaissance. David Hemsoll reveals the ways in which significant differences in imitative strategy distinguished the period's leading architects from each other and argues for a more nuanced understanding of the widely accepted trope--first articulated by Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century--that Renaissance architecture evolved through a linear step-by-step assimilation of antiquity. Offering an in-depth examination of the complex, sometimes contradictory, and often contentious ways that Renaissance architects approached the antique, this meticulously researched study brings to life a cacophony of voices and opinions that have been lost in the simplified Vasarian narrative and presents a fresh and comprehensive account of Renaissance architecture in both Florence and Rome.

Book Synopsis Giorgio Vasari by : Patricia Lee Rubin
Download or read book Giorgio Vasari written by Patricia Lee Rubin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vasari's Lives of the Painters, Sculptors, and Architects are and always have been central texts for the study of the Italian Renaissance. They can and should be read in many ways. Since their publication in the mid-sixteenth century, they have been a source of both information and pleasure. Their immediacy after more than four hundred years is a measure of Vasari's success. He wished the artists of his day, himself included, to be famous. He made the association of artistry and genius, of renaissance and the arts so familiar that they now seem inevitable. In this book Patricia Rubin argues that both the inevitability and the immediacy should be questioned. To read Vasari without historical perspective results in a limited and distorted view of The Lives. Rubin shows that Vasari had distinct ideas about the nature of his task as a biographer, about the importance of interpretation, judgment, and example - about the historian's art. Vasari's principles and practices as a writer are examined here, as are their sources in Vasari's experiences as an artist.

Download or read book Raphael written by Raphael and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original, thematic book focused on one of Raphael's favourite subjects, female portraits, which embody the typical ideals of Italian Renaissance: Grace and Beauty. This monograph, catalogue of the Paris fall exhibition, presents a selection of Raphael's female portraits, including extraordinary masterpieces such as the Lady with Unicorn, La Fornarina (The Baker Girl), La Muta (The Mute Woman), La Velata (Woman with a Veil) and the Portrait of Giovanna d'Aragona, as well as other paintings and drawings: a rare and unprecedented event, covering the entire career of Raphael through 30 exceptional masterpieces coming from major museums of the world. Raphael of Urbino received his early training in art from his father, the painter Giovanni Santi. In 1499 he went to Perugia, in Umbria, and became a student and assistant of the painter Perugino. In 1504 Raphael moved to Florence, where he studied the work of established painters of the time as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. At this time he made a transition from the typical style of the Umbrian school, with its emphasis on perspective and rigidly geometrical composition, to a more animated, informal manner of painting. In 1508 Raphael was called to Rome by Pope Julius II and commissioned to execute frescoes in the Vatican Palace. In 1513, after the accession of Leo X, Raphael's influence and responsibilities increased. He was made chief architect of Saint Peter's Basilica in 1514, and a year later was appointed director of all the excavations of antiquities in and near Rome. His portraits and double- portraits were highly sought after and established a standard for most Italian painters of the high Renaissance. He died in Rome onhis 37th birthday, April 6, 1520.
