Book Synopsis Evaluating Counterterrorism Performance by : Beatrice de Graaf
Download or read book Evaluating Counterterrorism Performance written by Beatrice de Graaf and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new model for measuring the success and impact of counterterrorism strategies, using four comparative historical case studies. The effectiveness of counterterrorism measures is hard to assess, especially since the social impact of terrorist attacks is a fundamental and complex issue. This book focuses on the impact of counterterrorist measures by introducing the concept of the performative power of counterterrorism: the extent to which governments mobilize public and political support - thereby sometimes even unwittingly assisting terrorists in creating social drama. The concept is applied to counterterrorism in the Netherlands, Italy, the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States in the 1970s. Based on in-depth case study research using new primary sources and interviews with counterterrorist officials and radicals, a correlation is established between a low level of performative power and a decline of terrorist incidents. This is explored in terms of the link between social drama (as enhanced by counterterrorist measures) and ongoing radicalization processes. This book demonstrates that an increase in visible and intrusive counterterrorist measures does not automatically lead to a more effective form of counterterrorism. In the open democracies of the west, not transforming counterterrorism into a performance of power and repression is at least as important as counterterrorism measures themselves. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism and counter-terrorism, discourse analysis, media and communication studies, conflict studies and IR/Security Studies in general.

Il nuovo ordine globale rischia di instaurarsi all'insegna della mistificazione demagogica invece che sostenuto dal consenso costruito su graduali negoziazioni e trade-off di interessi nazionali nell'unico sistema economico globale dell'economia industriale.Demagogy hinders today the necessary implementation of a new global order built by gradual, consensual agreements implementing the future governance of the unified global industrial system. The mistifying demagogic communications risk destroying the necessary confidence of the world public opinion needed by the geopolitical specialists to negotiate the acceptable national trade offs imposed by the irreversible globalization.
Book Synopsis Commercialising Security in Europe by : Anna Leander
Download or read book Commercialising Security in Europe written by Anna Leander and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the political consequences of European security commercialisation through increased reliance on private military and security companies (PMSCs). The role of commercial security in the domestic setting in Europe is widely acknowledged; after all, the biggest private security company globally – G4S Group – has its roots in Scandinavia. However, the use of commercial security contracting by European states for military purposes in international settings is mostly held to be marginal. This book examines the implications of commercialisation for the peace and reconciliations strategies of European states, focussing specifically on European contracting in Afghanistan. Drawing upon examples from Scandinavia, Central Europe and Continental Europe, each chapter considers three key factors: the national contexts that give security contracting in Afghanistan its meaning; the national contracting practices; the political consequences for the operation in Afghanistan. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, global governance, peace and conflict studies, European politics, and IR in general.
