Book excerpt: Roger Farr's IKMQ consists of sixty–four brief passages – stories, descriptions, instructions, scenarios, formulae – each involving the characters represented by the letters I, K, M and Q. Various clues, suggested by the rules of grammar and syntax, hint at connections and continuities, and at narrative peaking out from behind the screen of action. But never mind the theory – enjoy the ride, as I, K, M and Q convert houses to commercial grow–ops, manufacture explosives, go all in on the flop, get up early to catch chinook, plan, build and sell subdivisions, conduct meetings according to Roberts, plot a prison break, score an all–important goal, get the door for the pizza delivery boy, and get on with transforming the world through their revolutionary action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saptavidha-anupapatti represents a live-debate in the traditions of Vedanta initiated by Ramanujacarya. The central issue of this debate is to examine whether maya-avidya, postulated by Advaita-vedant, is philosophically sustainable, logically viable, and experientially reliable. While Sankara builds up the superstructure of Advaita on the basis of this concept, Ramanuja vociferously reacts to its philosophical ingenuity. This dispute between the Advaita and Visistadvaita schools with seven objections, which forms the manor theme of this book, has been going on for more than a millennium and is alive even today among Vedanta scholars. The volume contains, besides historical as well as philosophical explorations of the concept of maya-avidya, the arguments and counter arguments, formulation and counter-formulation to accommodate and reject the corresponding philosophical predilections of both the above schools by some of the preeminent philosophical minds of Indian philosophy of our times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I planned this book seven years ago I had my graduate students at the University of Ulm in mind, diploma as well as doctoral students, who often asked me what literature they should work with. I used to suggest a list of ten to twenty (for my taste: excellent) treatises on NMR. Apparently this did not make them entirely happy. The difficulty which newcomers to the field face is to practise and to apply theoretical formalisms from different sources while still learning the principles of NMR and being actively engaged in NMR research. Although the text presented here is largely based on my lecture notes, the result is a "working book" rather than an introduction. It is intended to provide direct access to the basic information one needs for NMR diffusometry, relaxometry, and tomography applications. A "working book" is certainly not suitable to be read starting on page one and then carrying on until the last page. Boldly extrapolating my own reading habits to those of the typical scientist I am sure that this is not the way in which monographs of this kind are read nowadays. So my aim was to produce a treatise that offers easy and quick access for the reader to relevant matters of interest. I tried hard to ease the comprehension of NMR principles by extensive cross-referencing among the sections and chapters. Tomography, diffusometry and relaxometry are fields based on common phys ical principles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume in a four-part series on Fluid Dynamics: PART 1: Classical Fluid Dynamics PART 2: Asymptotic Problems of Fluid Dynamics PART 3: Boundary Layers PART 4: Hydrodynamic Stability Theory The series is designed to give a comprehensive and coherent description of fluid dynamics, starting with chapters on classical theory suitable for an introductory undergraduate lecture course, and then progressing through more advanced material up to the level of modern research in the field. The notion of the boundary layer was introduced by Prandtl (1904) to describe thin viscous layers that form on a rigid body surface in high-Reynolds-number flows. Part 3 of this series begins with the classical theory of the boundary-layer flows, including the Blasius boundary layer on a flat plate and the Falkner-Skan solutions for the boundary layer on a wedge surface. However, the main focus is on recent results of the theory that have not been presented in texbooks before. These are based on the so-called "triple-deck theory" that have proved to be invaluable in describing various fluid-dynamic phenomena, including the boundary-layer separation from a rigid body surface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to bridge in one step the enormous gap between introductory quantum mechanics and the research front of modern optics and scientific fields that make use of light. Hence, while it is suitable as a reference for the specialist in quantum optics, it will also be useful to the non-specialists from other disciplines who need to understand light and its uses in research. With a unique approach it introduces a single analytic tool, namely the density matrix, to analyze complex optical phenomena encountered in traditional as well as cross-disciplinary research. It moves swiftly in a tight sequence from elementary to sophisticated topics in quantum optics, including laser tweezers, laser cooling, coherent population transfer, optical magnetism, electromagnetically induced transparency, squeezed light, quantum information science and cavity quantum electrodynamics. A systematic approach is used that starts with the simplest systems - stationary two-level atoms - then introduces atomic motion, adds more energy levels, and moves on to discuss first-, second-, and third-order coherence effects that are the basis for analyzing new optical phenomena in incompletely characterized systems. Unconventional examples and original problems are used to engage even seasoned researchers in exploring a mathematical methodology with which they can tackle virtually any new problem involving light. An extensive bibliography makes connections with mathematical techniques and subject areas which can extend the benefit readers gain from each section. This revised edition includes over 40 new problems (for a total of 110 original problems with an instructor's solution manual), as well as completely new sections on quantum interference, Fano resonance, optical magnetism, quantum computation, laser cooling of solids, and irreducible representation of magnetic interactions. Literature references to current ultrafast science, nonlinear optics, x-ray and high-field physics topics have doubled at the end of chapters 5, 6, and 7; the subject index has also been significantly expanded.
