Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Oral Literature: Its Philosophical Thoughts Conveyed in Yuruba Society explores the ways that the Yoruba people of Nigeria have made remarkable contributions to the world’s civilization. Yoruba philosophical, religious tenets, artistic tenets, ideas, and icons have helped to transform religious beliefs and practices and the arts. When considering the study of Yoruba oral traditions, one learns how its philosophical concepts are the bases for an interpretation of what constitutes their aesthetic performance in art forms. This book introduces distinguished Yoruba cultural historians documenting the full spectrum, which extends beyond the visual art form. Through oral tradition, the effigy with its ako naturalism is not judged for its photographic realism, but for its efficacy within the context of the ako traditional ceremony, which is intended to make the end of this life and the beginning of the next one honorable and dignifying for one's parents where good will is needed by those still on earth. About the Author Howard James Jordan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1948. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no limit to what constitutes heritage. By definition, heritage is the use of the past for present purposes. Yet, to any given group or population, heritage can be a multitude of things and can serve a variety of purposes. Based on shared memory, heritage can be tangible or intangible, boundless in variety and scope: it can be, for example, objects, landscapes, food or clothing, music or dance, sites or statues, monuments or buildings. Importantly, however, heritage also has many and varied uses and powers. It can be used to control, to unite, to engage, and to empower people, communities, and nations. In this interdisciplinary volume, authors from around the world explore how different communities, nations, and groups intentionally and creatively use heritage, both tangible and intangible, in a wide variety of ways to positively address social and environmental issues. Significantly, these studies demonstrate how heritage can be an exceptionally valuable tool for political, economic, and social change. Insightful studies are presented pertaining to heritage as social memory, including the nationalistic political use of heritage, heritage as resistance to political powers, traditional knowledge as environmental science, heritage for legal and community action, heritage for building peace, heritage for Indigenous and minority empowerment, and heritage for exploring the past through phenomenological methods. The goal of this volume is to move beyond seeing heritage as only social memory, a mere interpretation of static past events, people or places, and instead explores critically the variety of ways heritage is engaged in the present and can be in the future.

Book excerpt: Ìgbà Èwe is a bilingual poetry collection, containing twenty-six Yorùbá translated poems side-by-side with the original English text first published in 2014 in a collection titled Childhood by the American philosopher and professor Emily R. Grosholz. Ìgbà Èwe was first published under the Tevani imprint of Ouida Books on June 30, 2021. Grosholz' Childhood has been described as "a brilliant poetry book about the joys and challenges of adoption, childhood and motherhood." The translated paperback volume by Nigerian writer and linguist Kọ́lá Túbọ̀sún also features illustrations on the cover and within the pages, done by the Nigerian writer Yemisi Aribisala. Prof. Remi Raji of the University of Ibadan calls Ìgbà Èwe "the exemplary art of cultural dialogue across languages." Prof. Karin Barber, Africanist anthropologist at the London School of Economics, wrote in the blurb: "This is translation in its fullest sense-managing to convey the spirit of a lived world of experience grounded in the landscape, seasons and culture of Pennsylvania while bringing it into rapport with the imaginative resources of the Yorùbá poetic repertoire." Ngugi wa Thiong'o, famous African writer and language activist, wrote: "Translation is the common language of languages. [Túbọ̀sún] is among the young practical visionaries of New Africa." "With this powerful new edition," BrittlePaper.com writes of the work, "Túbọ̀sún introduces Grosholz's work to Yoruba readers the world over...The collection shows the impressive range of (his) abilities as a translator."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over 50,000 distinct species in sub-Saharan Africa alone, the African continent is endowed with an enormous wealth of plant resources. While more than 25 percent of known species have been used for several centuries in traditional African medicine for the prevention and treatment of diseases, Africa remains a minor player in the global natural products market largely due to lack of practical information. This updated and expanded second edition of the Handbook of African Medicinal Plants provides a comprehensive review of more than 2,000 species of plants employed in indigenous African medicine, with full-color photographs and references from over 1,100 publications. The first part of the book contains a catalog of the plants used as ingredients for the preparation of traditional remedies, including their medicinal uses and the parts of the plant used. This is followed by a pharmacognostical profile of 170 of the major herbs, with a brief description of the diagnostic features of the leaves, flowers, and fruits and monographs with botanical names, common names, synonyms, African names, habitat and distribution, ethnomedicinal uses, chemical constituents, and reported pharmacological activity. The second part of the book provides an introduction to African traditional medicine, outlining African cosmology and beliefs as they relate to healing and the use of herbs, health foods, and medicinal plants. This book presents scientific documentation of the correlation between the observed folk use and demonstrable biological activity, as well as the characterized constituents of the plants.
