Book excerpt: An attempted murder one dark night on the river disrupted the lives of two families and deeply affected the lives of two individuals from those same two families for the next five years. They had been forced to make choices that took them far apart before being serendipitously brought together once more. The would-be murderers, three of them, lost one of their own soon after that night from wounds he had received at the hands of their intended victim. Three years later, a second of them fortuitously became the victim of that same man they would have killed. The third and last one, attempting to recover the failing fortunes of the family in a poker game on the river, saw the means to cheat his opponent and at the same time to be rid of his sister who had unexpectedly shown up again. His first attempt on her life as they had travelled upriver had failed, and a second attempt would be difficult now that she expected it and now that she had a protector. He saw another way to be rid of her: in a poker game where he would wager her away. If only it could be that simple. He had no idea the trouble he would cause by that act. The unexpected outcome of that game brought two individuals closer together and eventually healed the initial disruption that had seen them torn apart five years earlier.

Book excerpt: Trollope’s mother, wife, and a friend he loved platonically most of his life provided him three very different views of the Victorian woman. And, according to Jane Nardin, they were responsible for the dramatic shift in his treatment of women in his novels. This is the first book in Sandra Gilbert’s Ad Feminam series to examine a male author. Nardin initially analyzes the novels Trollope wrote from 1855 to 1861, in which male concerns are central to the plot and women are angelic heroines, submissive and self-sacrificing. Even the titles of his novels written during this period are totally male oriented. The Three Clerks, Doctor Thorne, and The Bertrams all refer to men. Shortly after meeting Kate Field, Trollope wrote Orley Farm, which refers to the estate an angry woman steals from her husband and which marks a change in the attitudes toward women evident in his novels. His next four books, The Small House at Allington, Rachel Ray, Can You Forgive Her?, and Miss Mackenzie, prove that women’s concerns had become central in his writing. Nardin examines specific novels written from 1861 to 1865 in which Trollope, with increasing vigor, subverts the conventional notions of gender that his earlier novels had endorsed. Nardin argues that his novels written after 1865 and often recognized as feminist are not really departures but merely refinements of attitudes Trollope exhibited in earlier works.

Book excerpt: Love stories are as old as time. What makes this one different is that it is true. It is an enchanting story that starts during the Second World War. An artillery officer about to go overseas on active service meets a pretty girl in a small village in the south of England. She is a talented draftswoman in the drawing office of a key wartime research establishment. They fall in love. His embarkation leave turns into a whirlwind courtship. Separated by war and duty, they never lose hope that one day they will be together. There is a first-hand account of the Allied landings in North Africa and the invasion of Sicily. A charming picture is painted of the day-to-day life of the young girl as she awaits his return, with fascinating glimpses of life in wartime Britain. Their dreams come true and they are married. In the post-war years their life together is rich in travel and adventure; the scene moves to Singapore, Hong Kong, America and France. It contains many amusing incidents and anecdotes that portray everyday life in the half- century that has just ended. Through it all runs the thread of their timeless romance. It is a lovely story that never loses its enchantment. It will have special appeal in an age of some cynicism about romance and marriage. Once started, it is hard to put this book down.

Book excerpt: Who Knew? is a continuation of Romy Shiller's book You Never Know: A Memoir. Romy is considered a medical mystery and applies her previous interest and scholarly work on the body to her new physical reality. Romy's intense belief that we can meet and overcome challenges prompted her to write this book. People expect distress when faced with a life-altering situation. Who Knew? proves that there are options available to everyone when it comes to facing challenges. Romy looks at internalized ideas about the body. She provides a new approach to physicality (how we utilize the body) and image (how we perceive the body). Our culture is obsessed with looking a certain way. Opting out of conventional modes of appearance is liberating. This book and Romy's attitude are not about denial; they are about acceptance. Acceptance for Romy does not preclude change. It is more about blending realities, weaving the idea of identity. Fluctuation and adaptation are important qualities. Romy's non-malignant brain tumour operation and subsequent five-month coma have left her in a wheelchair, with a voice/speech impediment called dysarthria. Romy Shiller is proof we can overcome our challenges.
