Book Synopsis How to Fix a Broken Heart by : Guy Winch
Download or read book How to Fix a Broken Heart written by Guy Winch and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine if we treated broken hearts with the same respect and concern we have for broken arms? Psychologist Guy Winch urges us to rethink the way we deal with emotional pain, offering warm, wise, and witty advice for the broken-hearted. Real heartbreak is unmistakable. We think of nothing else. We feel nothing else. We care about nothing else. Yet while we wouldn’t expect someone to return to daily activities immediately after suffering a broken limb, heartbroken people are expected to function normally in their lives, despite the emotional pain they feel. Now psychologist Guy Winch imagines how different things would be if we paid more attention to this unique emotion—if only we can understand how heartbreak works, we can begin to fix it. Through compelling research and new scientific studies, Winch reveals how and why heartbreak impacts our brain and our behavior in dramatic and unexpected ways, regardless of our age. Emotional pain lowers our ability to reason, to think creatively, to problem solve, and to function at our best. In How to Fix a Broken Heart he focuses on two types of emotional pain—romantic heartbreak and the heartbreak that results from the loss of a cherished pet. These experiences are both accompanied by severe grief responses, yet they are not deemed as important as, for example, a formal divorce or the loss of a close relative. As a result, we are often deprived of the recognition, support, and compassion afforded to those whose heartbreak is considered more significant. Our heart might be broken, but we do not have to break with it. Winch reveals that recovering from heartbreak always starts with a decision, a determination to move on when our mind is fighting to keep us stuck. We can take control of our lives and our minds and put ourselves on the path to healing. Winch offers a toolkit on how to handle and cope with a broken heart and how to, eventually, move on.

Book Synopsis Things Worth Keeping by : Christine Harold
Download or read book Things Worth Keeping written by Christine Harold and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely examination of the attachments we form to objects and how they might be used to reduce waste Rampant consumerism has inundated our planet with pollution and waste. Yet attempts to create environmentally friendly forms of consumption are often co-opted by corporations looking to sell us more stuff. In Things Worth Keeping, Christine Harold investigates the attachments we form to the objects we buy, keep, and discard, and explores how these attachments might be marshaled to create less wasteful practices and balance our consumerist and ecological impulses. Although all economies produce waste, no system generates as much or has become so adept at hiding its excesses as today’s mode of global capitalism. This book suggests that managing the material excesses of our lives as consumers requires us to build on, rather than reject, our desire for and attraction to objects. Increasing environmental awareness on its own will be ineffective at reversing ecological devastation, Harold argues, unless it is coupled with a more thorough understanding of how and why we love the things that imbue our lives with pleasure, meaning, and utility. From Marie Kondo’s method for decluttering that asks whether the things in our lives “spark joy” to the advent of emotionally durable design, which seeks to reduce consumption and waste by increasing the meaningfulness of the relationship between user and product, Harold explores how consumer psychology and empathetic design can transform our perception of consumer products from disposable to interconnected. An urgent call for rethinking consumerism, Things Worth Keeping shows that by recognizing our responsibility for the things we produce, we can become better stewards of the planet.

Whether you are gay, trans, nonbinary, straight . . . Whatever your race, gender, religion or sexual identity or orientation—this book is for you. Most relationship guides are written by therapists who base their advice on success stories. This is not that book. This is not your average relationship book. This book emerged from failure and offers a unique and fresh perspective. (Think, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” except the albatross is Zsa Zsa Gabor). Written by a divorce attorney with more than twenty years’ experience, this book works backwards, scrutinizing and dissecting the reasons relationships go wrong, to help you find the right relationship. In working with thousands of divorcing couples, author Sarah Intelligator, has distilled several unmistakable patterns among failed relationships. She has reduced these patterns into six categories, “F-Words”: Fundamental Values, Fear, Foundation, Fixing, Fairy Tale, and Family. This book will teach you to recognize and avoid these predictable patterns in your own search for a life partner, so that you may find a fulfilling and enduring relationship. Throughout the course of this book, you will be guided on an introspective journey of deep self-reflection. You will come out the other side not only with a more solid understanding of what you want in a relationship, but how to go about finding a partner best suited for you, because you deserve to love and be loved in a healthy way.

Book Synopsis Government Budgeting and Expenditure Management by : Salvatore Schiavo-Campo
Download or read book Government Budgeting and Expenditure Management written by Salvatore Schiavo-Campo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The government budget should be the financial mirror of society's choices. Yet most people view budgeting as the epitome of eye-glazing subjects, rarely explained in a way that is understandable to the non-specialist and too often presented without adequate consideration of a country’s governance and institutional capacity. Government Budgeting and Expenditure Management fills a gap in the literature to redress these failings and does so in comparative international perspective. This book provides a comprehensive but pithy and easy-to-understand treatment of public financial management, taking into account a variety of special issues including budgeting in post-conflict situations, at subnational government levels, for military/security expenditures, and in countries with large extractive revenues. Distilling the lessons of budgeting reform in countries at different levels of income and administrative capacity, each chapter gradually progresses from the basic principles to the more technical aspects and then on to implementation issues, using concrete examples and illustrations from around the globe. Government Budgeting and Expenditure Management is ideally suited as the primary text for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in government budgeting or public financial management, or as a supplementary text for courses in public finance, public economics, economic development, public administration or comparative politics. With its attention to practical implementation aspects, the book will also be of direct interest to practitioners, policy-makers, and government employee training organizations.

Book Synopsis Uneasy Balance by : Thomas S. Langston
Download or read book Uneasy Balance written by Thomas S. Langston and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first book to focus on civil-military tensions after American wars, Thomas Langston challenges conventional theory by arguing that neither civilian nor military elites deserve victory in this perennial struggle. What is needed instead, he concludes, is balance. In America's worst postwar episodes, those that followed the Civil War and the Vietnam War, balance was conspicuously absent. In the late 1860s and into the 1870s, the military became the tool of a divisive partisan program. As a result, when Reconstruction ended, so did popular support of the military. After the Vietnam War, military leaders were too successful in defending their institution against civilian commanders, leading some observers to declare a crisis in civil-military relations even before Bill Clinton became commander-in-chief. Is American military policy balanced today? No, but it may well be headed in that direction. At the end of the 1990s there was still no clear direction in military policy. The officer corps stubbornly clung to a Cold War force structure. A civilian-minded commander-in-chief, meanwhile, stretched a shrinking force across the globe. With the shocking events of September 11, 2001, clarifying the seriousness of the post-Cold War military policy, we may at last be moving toward a true realignment of civilian and military imperatives.

Download or read book The Enemy of Nature written by Joel Kovel and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in and from nature, but the way we have evolved of doing this is about to destroy us. Capitalism and its by-products - imperialism, war, neoliberal globalization, racism, poverty and the destruction of community - are all playing a part in the destruction of our ecosystem. Only now are we beginning to realise the depth of the crisis and the kind of transformation which will have to occur to ensure our survival. This second, thoroughly updated, edition of The Enemy of Nature speaks to this new environmental awareness. Joel Kovel argues against claims that we can achieve a better environment through the current Western 'way of being'. By suggesting a radical new way forward, a new kind of 'ecosocialism', Joel Kovel offers real hope and vision for a more sustainable future.
