Book excerpt: An Oprah Magazine Best Romance Novel of 2020 In this brand-new series from award-winning author Rebekah Weatherspoon, a charming cowboy and his sleeping beauty find their modern-day happily ever after . . . With a headline spot on a hit morning show and truly mouth-watering culinary skills, chef Evie Buchanan is perched on the edge of stardom. But at an industry party, a fall lands Evie in the hospital—with no memory of who she is. Scrambling to help, Evie’s assistant contacts the only “family” Evie has left, close friends who run the luxury dude ranch in California where Evie grew up. Evie has no recollection of them—until former rodeo champion Zach Pleasant walks into her hospital room, and she realizes his handsome face has been haunting her dreams . . . Zach hasn’t seen Evie in years—not since their families conducted a campaign to make sure their childhood friendship never turned into anything more. When the young cowboy refused to admit the feelings between them were real, Evie left California, making it clear she never wanted to see Zach again. Now he refuses to make the same mistake twice. Starting fresh is a risk when they have a history she can’t recall, but Zach can’t bear to let go of her now. Can he awaken the sleeping beauty inside her who might still love him?

Now, have you ever watched a police show on TV, or caught a movie that had you wonder "Hey, there really can't be folks out there like that. Folks don't do those things. Shoot! Some beer bellied, pipe-smoking author or screen writer dreamed them up. Ain't no real live hoods, or crooks like that, is there? Well, amigo, I grew up in Texas, around folks who rode, roped and branded, understand? I got away from that in my teens and began stealing cars and burglarizing homes and small businesses. I ended up in various Texas city and county jails, even pulled a quarter of a year behind bars for one offense. I never served any "hard time" but I had amigos who did, so I walked the walk and talked the talk and no one messed with me. Then I had a drunken car wreck, broke my neck (a hangman's break). I spent five and a half months in a coma and the Lord God messed with me. So here I am and here's my story. Gary Lee Berry

Book excerpt: After spending his entire 14-year career as an NFL defensive back with Dallas, in many ways Mel Renfro’s name has become synonymous with the Cowboys. Now, in this authorized biography from bestselling author Jeff Sullivan and Bob Gill, a friend who has known Renfro for more than five decades, fans have the opportunity to see Renfro as never before. With a look at Renfro’s dynamic athletic career at the University of Oregon—where he was an All-American in football and track and field—the book then discusses the Hall of Famer’s career with the Cowboys. As the team’s kick returner and defensive back, Renfro found immediate success as he was selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his first 10 seasons and helped the team win Super Bowls VI and XII. After his retirement, Renfro became involved in motivational speaking, and his voice drives this biography, which explores his triumphs and place, forever, in Dallas Cowboys history.

Book excerpt: New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Carolyn Brown sends readers on a wild ride in this enemies to lovers romance between a rugged rodeo cowboy and a fierce competitor who thinks it's time for a woman to take the crown. Gemma O'Donnell was incensed when she wasn't the first woman to win the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Championship Association) buckle for bronc riding. This year, she heads out on the PRCA ProRodeo Tour burning to be the second. First stop is Cody, Wyoming where her stiffest competition is Trace Coleman, who already has a jump on her. A tall, dark-haired cowboy with a sexy grin and a swagger, he doesn't really give a damn about the trophy belt buckle—he wants the purse to buy a ranch he has his eye on. He damn sure doesn't have time for a sassy bit of Irish baggage who can evidently ride anything with four legs and make anything with two legs want to take her to bed. Gemma wins a few; Trace wins a few. In the end they both qualify for the final cut in Las Vegas. But when it comes down to the wire, only one can win the bronc-riding competition and take home one helluva prize. But in this competition, it just might be loser takes all...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the United States expanded west in the 1800s, and cattle became big business, the figure of the young brash cattleman who rode with the herds quickly emerged as a cultural icon. Victorian Americans went crazy for cowboys, snapping up dime-store novels and sheet music, and turning out in droves for Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show. It was only a matter of time before someone brought together these three facets-entertainer, singer, and cowboy. And when Carl T. Sprague recorded the first hit cowboy record ("When the Work's All Done This Fall") in 1925, the singing cowboy as we know him was born. A singing cowboy himself, Douglas B. Green (better known as Ranger Doug from the Grammy-award-winning group Riders In The Sky) is uniquely suited to write the story of the singing cowboy. He has been collecting information and interviews on western music, films, and performers for nearly thirty years. In this volume, he traces this history from the early days of vaudeville and radio, through the heyday of movie westerns before World War II, to the current revival. He provides rich and careful analysis of the studio system that made men such as Gene Autry and Roy Rogers famous, and he documents the role that country music and regional television stations played in carrying on the singing cowboy tradition after World War II. This book, lavishly illustrated with over 140 photos, is a wealth of information that comes out of decades of research. Green has unearthed never-before-published photos and rare movie posters-including one from an all-Black western, Harlem on the Prairie (1938). Through his close friendships with other singing cowboys and their families, Green is able to provide rare insights into the ways that some like Autry became stars and others like Raoul Walsh (who lost his eye in a shooting accident and later became a famous director) did not. Green also traces the history of cowboy music, from popular songs such as "Sweet Betsy from Pike" to the instantly recognizable harmonies of the Sons of the Pioneers. Green even speculates about just when the famous yodel became a ubiquitous part of the singing cowboy's repertoire. More important, Green reveals how the imagery of the singing cowboy has become such a potent force that even now country musicians don cowboy hats so as to symbolically take part in the legend. Nowhere has the recorded history of the singing cowboy and the film history been collected in one volume, and this book is sure to become the resource for students of the style. Fresh off a breakup, Taylor Manning accepts a yearlong teaching position in Cougar Point, Montana, and plans to focus on herself, avoid men, and return home a changed woman. That’s before she meets Russ Palmer, a local rancher who’s as stubborn as he is handsome. With his old-fashioned attitudes about women, Russ is the last man Taylor could imagine dating, and the feeling seems to be mutual. So why can’t she seem to get him off her mind? Russ is raising his teenage sister all by his lonesome, and he doesn’t appreciate Cougar Point’s pretty new teacher second-guessing his decisions as a surrogate parent. In fact, every time they cross paths, Taylor seems to have a bone to pick. But no matter how much they disagree, their chemistry is off the charts. And if Taylor would stop arguing long enough to notice, Russ will give her a very good reason to stick around. Published by Debbie Macomber Books
