Burcu Dabak Ozdemir analyses five case study films wherein she reveals that cross-dressing characters are able to escape persecutors and surveillance - key instruments of oppression during Turkey's coups. She shows how cross-dressing in the films examined become a destabilising force, a form of implicit resistance against state power, both political and in terms of binaries of gender and identity, and a means to register moments of national trauma. The book historicises the concept of cross-dressing in modern Turkey by examining what the author argues is a formative trauma worked through in the films examined: the westernization policies of the Kemalist regime whose most immediate symbolic presence was worn - the enforced adoption of western dress by citizens. Of interest to scholars of gender, queer, film and trauma studies, the book will also appeal to students and scholars of contemporary Turkish culture and society.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the re-presentations of conflict in new Turkish cinema vis-Ã -vis the official discourse in the 1990s and 2000s. It aims to identify to what extent the selected films present alternative perspectives on the conflict in relation to the ones that are promoted in the official discourse. The thesis adopts a critical discourse-analytical approach to the study of the interplay between the films and the official discourse as an intertextual one in which the former revisit and rework the latter. The thesis analyses this interplay on two levels. First, it situates the films within the history of the conflict to establish the effect of the state rhetoric and practices on their production, distribution and reception. Second, the thesis examines each film"s interplay with the official discourse through the lens of multilingualism, non-translation and recontextualisation. It draws on the mainstream press as the medium for the identification of the official discourse on the conflict to be taken as a reference point on this second level of analysis. Demonstrating the historical overlap between the official and media discourses on the conflict, the thesis specifically focuses on the broadsheet newspaper, Milliyet, which effectively acted as the mouthpiece of the state. The inquiries into the functions of depicting multilingualism and translation also highlight the linguistic dimension of the conflict and discuss the official language ideology and language policy in Turkey as two interrelated components of the official discourse on the conflict. Finally, the thesis examines the recontextualisation of national symbols, official images, texts, audio and video material, songs and fairy tales in the films in identifying their intertextual references and interplay with the official discourse. The thesis thus introduces new readings of the selected films and contributes to the literature on the depictions of multilingualism and non-translation in Turkish cinema.

However, what is particularly unusual about this revival is the emergence of a new representational form: silent, inaudible characters. Equally unusual is the fact that this new on-screen silence had a gender(ed/ing) aspect, since, for the most part, the mute(d) characters were female. This book focuses on these newly emergent silent female characters in the new cinema of Turkey, and explores the relationship between the ‘new’ female representational form, the ‘new’ cinema of Turkey, and the ‘new’ socio-political climate in Turkey after the September 12, 1980 military coup. It investigates two central questions: what are the functions, formations and operations of these silent female characters, and why did this female representational form emerge specifically in this timeframe? Bearing a cinematic function of instrumentality and exposing, one way or another, a close association between point of view and discursive authority in the films studied, the silent female representational form in the new cinema of Turkey is a cinematic symptom of the on-going struggle over the disrupted orders of gender, nation and national memory due to an increase in thus-far silenced or marginalized voices in Turkey. The silent form not only functions as a cinematic instrument to reveal crises in hegemonic power positions, but also becomes a battleground within a struggle for (re)obtaining a position of discursive authority in the realms of gender, nation and past. The silent form in itself becomes an instrument on the discursive level, which enables a response to Turkey’s crises in these three interconnected realms in the post-1980s.
