Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in English to survey the Eastern German literary trend of employing humor and satire to come to terms with experiences in the German Democratic Republic and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. As sophisticated attempts to make sense of socialism’s failure and a difficult unification process, these contemporary texts help define Germany today from a specific, Eastern German perspective. Grounded in politics and history, ten humorous and satirical novels are analyzed for their literary aesthetics and language, cultural critiques, and socio-political insights. The texts include popular novels such as Thomas Brussig’s Helden wie wir, Ingo Schulze’s Simple Storys, and Jens Sparschuh’s Der Zimmerspringbrunnen, as well as lesser-known but equally relevant works like Schlehweins Giraffe by Bernd Schirmer and Katerfrühstück by Erich Loest. A broad spectrum of humor and satire theories is applied to probe texts from various angles and suggest multi-layered answers to the question of how these literary modes function in postwall Germany to construct a specifically Eastern German identity. Interviews the author conducted with five of the satirists are appended as primary sources and contribute to the interpretation of the texts.

Download or read book Capturing Identity written by Meike Watzlawik and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2007 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists from six countries, well known for their work in the field of identity research, explain and comment on methodological approaches used to research identity. This book concentrates on qualitative methods, such as narrative identity analysis or semi-structured interviewing techniques to determine identity status, as well as the quantitative method of using questionnaires. It also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these methods and their future integration. The reader will learn about qualitative and quantitative research and discover the similarities and differences between the methods of researching identity, depending on research with methodological roots in one field, the other, or both. Chapters include: -James E. Marcia presents his latest thoughts and experiences regarding the identity status concept and focuses on the Identity Status Interview (ISI) as a method to obtain empirical access to ego identity development. -Guenter Mey presents a case study from his project "Adolescence, Identity, Narration" based on problem-centered interviews and the specific interviewing, transcription, and data analysis procedures utilized. -Mechthild Kiegelmann introduces the Voice Approach, a qualitative-oriented research method developed by Carol Gilligan, Lyn Brown, and their colleagues, which can be applied to identity research. -Luc Goossens and Koen Luyckx present their results, which are mostly based on questionnaires offering a broad range of data analyses. -Wim Meeus, the author of the Utrecht-Groningen Identity Development Scale, and Minet de Wied offer an overview of twenty-five years of research on relationships with parents and identity in adolescence.
Book Synopsis The Educated Subject and the German Concept of Bildung by : Rebekka Horlacher
Download or read book The Educated Subject and the German Concept of Bildung written by Rebekka Horlacher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German education plays a huge role in the development of education sciences and modern universities internationally. It is influenced by the educational concept of Bildung, which defines Germany ‘s theoretical and curricular ventures. This concept is famously untranslatable into other languages and is often misinterpreted as education, instruction, training, upbringing and other terms which don’t encompass its cultural ambitions. Despite this hurdle, Bildung is now being recognized in current discussions of education issues such as standardization, teaching to the test, evidence-based policy and high stakes testing. This volume clears up the confusion and misunderstandings surrounding Bildung by examining the origins of the concept and how it has been applied throughout history. It paves the way for educators to fully understand and benefit from this model and all it has to offer.
