Dieser Forschungslücke liegen drei Ursachen zugrunde: 1. Die mangelnde Differenzierung zwischen unterschiedlichen Formen von Gedächtnis und Erinnerung, 2. die einseitige Fokussierung auf den Aspekt der diachronen Identität und 3. die fehlende Integration empirischer Ergebnisse in die philosophische Theoriebildung. Der Autor entwickelt auf der Grundlage dieser Problemanalyse einen Ansatz, der die Bedeutung von Gedächtnis und Erinnerung als konstitutive Kriterien personaler Identität aufzuzeigen vermag. Durch die Differenzierung verschiedener Gedächtnisformen, die Charakterisierung der biographischen Identität im Sinne eines evaluativen Selbstverhältnisses von Personen sowie durch die eingehende Berücksichtigung der psychologischen Gedächtnisforschung entsteht eine empirisch fundierte philosophische Theorie zur Rolle von Gedächtnis und Erinnerung bei der Konstituierung und Aufrechterhaltung personaler Identität.

Zunächst wird die Klärung der für die vorliegende Arbeit zentralen Begriffe von Erinnerung und Identität als Einstieg in das Thema dienen. Im Anschluss folgt ein literaturgeschichtlicher Überblick, um mit Hilfe des Kontexts, Autor und Text zeit- und literaturgeschichtlich einordnen zu können. Schließlich leitet eine kurze Inhaltsangabe von „El jinete polaco“ den Hauptteil des behandelten Themas ein. Dieser Feststellung hat sich ein von einigen Autoren – unter ihnen der Holocaust-Überlebende Elie Wiesel – postuliertes Darstellungsverbot des Holocaust angeschlossen: Die Schrecken der Shoah sind schlicht in keine Vor- und somit auch in keine Darstellung zu bringen.

As one of the last philosophers of the 19th century, Nietzsche naturally belongs to the so-called ‘historical century’. The contentious exchange with the past and with antiquity – as much as the mechanisms, the dangers, and the lessons of memory and tradition – are continually examined and stand in close relationship with Nietzsche’s vision of life and his project of human development. As Jacob Burckhardt once wrote of the cultural critique to his Basel colleague: "Fundamentally, you are always teaching history" (9/13/1882). Following Burckhardt’s judgment, the contributors focus on the analysis of core questions in the philosophies of history and memory, and their respective convergence in the thought of Nietzsche. The epistemological relevance of these central concepts will be thematized alongside those concerning tradition, and education. The discussion of these rich themes unifies a broad spectrum of questions, ranging from cultural memory to contemporary philosophy of mind. The contributions are revised versions of selected papers presented at the 2018 conference of the annual meeting of the Nietzsche Society in Naumburg.
