Despite the serious and long-term consequences for victims as well as their families, communities, and society, efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to these crimes are largely under supported, inefficient, uncoordinated, and unevaluated. Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States examines commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents of the United States under age 18. According to this report, efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to these crimes require better collaborative approaches that build upon the capabilities of people and entities from a range of sectors. In addition, such efforts need to confront demand and the individuals who commit and benefit from these crimes. The report recommends increased awareness and understanding, strengthening of the law's response, strengthening of research to advance understanding and to support the development of prevention and intervention strategies, support for multi-sector and interagency collaboration, and creation of a digital information-sharing platform. A nation that is unaware of these problems or disengaged from solutions unwittingly contributes to the ongoing abuse of minors. If acted upon in a coordinated and comprehensive manner, the recommendations of Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States can help advance and strengthen the nation's emerging efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors in the United States.

Women and children are trafficked within and between countries at an alarming rate and it has become a prime agenda for the Bush Administration and the Department of State to call for action and solutions to. This thesis opens with a defining of this problem and overview of the scope of the problem on a global scale. It reviews social, political and economic factors which play a role. It describes laws enacted and police responses and describes what research has been conducted to get a grasp of what is involved and what might be done. This author decided to explore factors that other researchers have suggested are compelling factors in victimization. This research hypothesis for this thesis explores the economic factors. Comparisons are made between countries of origin where victims originate from and destination countries where they are trafficked to. The research findings reveal some significant differences in economic factors exist between the origin and destination countries. The findings lend support in why victims feel compelled to seek entrance to countries like the U.S. and Australia or U.K. and might be easy prey for traffickers. This author makes it clear that the research here does not mean that this is why they are victimized. Further research with victim surveys and victim interviews will be helpful. Furthermore, it will be valuable to conduct more exploration of the economic factors, but more accurate data sources are needed. It is recommended that countries attempt to establish more standardized criteria for reporting economic data.

Book excerpt: Human trafficking has many names and can take many forms - pimp control, commercial sex, exploitation, forced labor, modern slavery, child labor, and several others - and the definitions vary greatly across countries and cultures, as well as among researchers. In the United States, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) is the cornerstone of counter-trafficking efforts. It provides guidance for identifying and defining human trafficking, and it authorizes legislation and appropriations for subsequent counter-trafficking measures both within and outside of the federal government. First enacted in 2000, the TVPA has since been reauthorized by three administrations, and it includes a directive for the President to establish an Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking. The subsequent Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Reauthorization Act of 2018 also includes provisions for victim services and plans to enhance collaboration efforts to fight trafficking abroad. To explore current and innovative sampling methods, technological approaches, and analytical strategies for estimating the prevalence of sex and labor trafficking in vulnerable populations, a 2-day public workshop, Approaches to Estimating the Prevalence of Human Trafficking in the United States, was held in Washington, D.C. in April 2019. The workshop brought together statisticians, survey methodologists, researchers, public health practitioners, and other experts who work closely with human trafficking data or with the survivors of trafficking. Participants addressed the current state of research on human trafficking, advancements in data collection, and gaps in the data. They discussed international practices and global trends in human trafficking prevalence estimation and considered ways in which collaborations across agencies and among the U.S. government and private-sector organizations have advanced counter-trafficking efforts. This proceedings summarizes the presentations and discussions of the workshop.

Also, there are barriers to identifying and responding to victims of sex trafficking. Over the last ten years, there has been an increase in training of health care professionals on sex trafficking and its health implications settings (Bersamin, et al., 2014). However, methods and content of education on trafficking vary widely, and there is little evaluation of the impact of the training. Recent studies have demonstrated that 28 percent to 50 percent of human trafficked victims in the United States encountered health care professionals while in captivity but not identified or recognized (Bersamin, et al., 2014). The objective of this paper is to evaluate the knowledge gaps and training needs of medical providers and to demonstrate the importance of providing training to meet sex trafficked victim’s specific needs. Also, address the barriers to identify and respond to victims of sex trafficking. The process of researching healthcare provider training awareness in identifying sex trafficked victims may provide valuable insight for policy making to prevent, protect, and prosecute human traffickers and eradicate this crime.

Book excerpt: Today, millions of children, women, and men are suffering gross human rights violations in every corner of the world, including the United States (US) and manifested through Human Trafficking (HT). This type of victimization is a public health concern and a human rights issue. US-born victims are typically commercially sexual exploited through sex trafficking. Once victimized, they become an extremely hidden population. Yet, they interact with healthcare providers (HCP) when seeking medical care at some point during their period of victimization. Although few protocols and trainings to identify HT victims in healthcare settings exist, only a limited number of hospitals and healthcare facilities implement them. Therefore, sex trafficking victims go unidentified. There is scant research investigating patient-healthcare provider interactions from the survivor of sex trafficking (SST) perspective. Therefore, this study sought to: 1) identify the type of healthcare settings sex trafficking survivors frequented during their victimization period and reasons for their visit; 2) explore SST's perceptions about their interactions with HCPs; and 3) document survivors' recommendations on how to best screen, identify, and assist victims of sex trafficking within healthcare settings. This study utilized an exploratory, concurrent mixed-methods research approach with a triangulation design model. Recruitment took place in San Diego, CA and Philadelphia, PA. A 48-item questionnaire and semi-structured interview guide were utilized to collect data. Data analyses were based on descriptive and inductive processes. Participants were US-born and self-identified as SST (N=21). Almost one-half of them were white (47.6%), followed by Blacks (23.8%). On average, SST were victimized for 4.9 years. Most commonly sought healthcare settings were Emergency Departments (ED) and community care clinics, specifically Planned Parenthood (PP). SST's non-disclosure of their victimization to medical professionals was high, 61.9%. Participants' recommendations to the healthcare community encompassed three types: 1) Knowledge and Skills; 2) Attitudes and Behaviors; and 3) Safe Plans and Resources. This study confirmed previous findings that sex trafficking victims seek care at different types of healthcare settings and reasons for seeking medical care. Most importantly, it presented noteworthy insights regarding barriers limiting SSTs from disclosing their victimization to HCPs, and thus contributes key facts with which to identify and intervene on behalf of sex trafficking victims within healthcare settings.
