This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The choice of financial performance measures is one of the most critical challenges facing organizations. The accounting-based measures of financial performance have been viewed as inadequate, as firms began focusing on shareholder value as the primary long-term objective of the organization. Hence, value-based metrics were devised that explicitly incorporate the cost of capital into performance calculations. Despite the increasing emphasis on these value-based measures, no definitive evidence exists of which metric works better than others, and on the extent to which any of them is superior to traditional accounting measures. In this scenario, the objective of this book is contributing to the ongoing dialogue on the appropriateness of different financial performance measures, by providing a systematic and updated review of the major value-based measures, by highlighting their respective strengths and weaknesses and by comparing the main international empirical evidence on their effectiveness. This book can be a powerful tool for guiding managers and graduate students in the “tangled forest” of the existing metrics, by providing them with the quick, but adequate knowledge for consistently adopting them.

The questions which were answered were "what does controlling involve and which factors influence the set-up of the controlling function in a company", "how are the expectations towards the controlling function changing over time and what is its value contribution", "how can the controlling function add value to standard reporting and budgeting activities" and "how can the controlling function add value to reorganization activities".

Book Synopsis National Oil Companies and Value Creation by : Silvana Tordo
Download or read book National Oil Companies and Value Creation written by Silvana Tordo and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2011-07-13 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Oil Companies (NOCs) directly or indirectly control the majority of oil and gas reserves. As such, they are of great consequence to their country's economy, to importing countries' energy security, and to the stability of oil and gas markets. The paper analyzes the available evidence on the objectives, governance and performance of 20 NOCs from both net importing and net exporting countries, and draws conclusions about the design of policies and measures that are more likely to lead to social value creation. NOCs differ from private companies on a number of very important variables, including the level of competition in the market in which they operate, their business profile along the sector value chain, and their degree of commercial orientation and internationalization. Most share some core characteristics: they are usually tied to the 'national purpose' and serve political and economic goals other than maximizing the firm's profits. This paper introduces a conceptual model to analyze value creation by NOCs that takes into consideration their complex objective function. Our analysis aims to answer the following questions: Are certain corporate governance arrangements more suited than others to promote value creation? Is good geology a pre-condition for NOC value creation? Are there benefits from exposing the NOC to competition from private oil companies? Does the development of forward and backward linkages hamper NOC value creation?

Book Synopsis Business Models and Corporate Reporting by : Lorenzo Simoni
Download or read book Business Models and Corporate Reporting written by Lorenzo Simoni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-19 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the role of business models in corporate reporting. It illustrates the evolution of non-financial reporting, the importance of business model reporting, and the main conceptualisations of business models. It also offers a methodological contribution to the assessment of business model reporting. Finally, it discusses the main implication of business model reporting for different categories of subjects and some challenges related to this kind of disclosure. Readers will understand the role of business models in the non-financial reporting landscape. They will also gain an understanding of how business models can help users of the annual report contextualise other non-financial items disclosed. However, effective business model reporting implies paying attention to certain features that define its quality. This theme is discussed in the empirical part of the book and in the section devoted to implications for preparers, users, and regulators. As large companies in the EU and the UK have to disclose the business model in the annual report, this book will be of interest to preparers and users of financial statements, regulators involved in the ongoing non-financial regulatory process, and professional bodies. It will also be of interest to academics interested in the investigation of non-financial reporting.
