Book excerpt: Aviation weather forecasters are still greatly challenged to forecast aviation weather hazards for large areas of atmosphere with few in-situ observations and little detailed information from which to work. Forecasters generally lack sufficient guidance to assist them in the prediction of icing occurrences or intensity. In-flight aircraft icing remains a significant aviation hazard. Icing intensity is related to the rate of accretion as well as the aircraft type and the icing's effects on aircraft flight performance. Icing regions currently can only be identified from subjective reports made by aircraft pilots (PIREPs). The severity of aircraft icing is found to be quite sensitive to temperature, liquid water content, and droplet size distribution along the flight path within the icing cloud. The difficulty of their direct measurement and the variability of these factors with altitude, position, and time, coupled with variable aircraft sensitivities, make forecasting and identifying icing environments quite difficult With the advent of the next generation of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES), additional spectral channels with improved ground resolution are available for use in a wide variety of research applications. One important outcome of applied research based on improved GOES-8 imager products is analysis technique developments that will lead to better forecasts of hazardous aircraft flying conditions.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, a fuzzy logic algorithm is developed for the detection of potential aircraft icing conditions using the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The fuzzy MODIS algorithm is developed in a manner similar to the cloud mask currently used to process MODIS imagery. The MODIS icing potential detection algorithm uses thresholds for 8 channels in a series of 12 tests to determine the probability of icing conditions being present within a cloud. The MODIS algorithm results were compared to results of the GOES icing potential detection algorithm run on MODIS imagery for 4 cases. When compared to positive and icing pilot reports for the cases, the MODIS algorithm identified regions where icing was encountered more effectively than the GOES algorithm. Furthermore, the use of fuzzy thresholds on MODIS rather than the hard thresholds of the GOES algorithm allowed for less restrictive coverage of potential icing conditions, making the MODIS algorithm more reasonable in assessing all cloud regions for icing potential. The results found here are preliminary, as further statistical analysis with a larger validation dataset would be more effective. Algorithm details are provided in the appendix for reference.

Book excerpt: Research was conducted in three areas: 1) Survey foreign countries and retrieve whenever possible aircraft icing data that would be suitable for inclusion into the already established FAA/NRL icing data base; 2) Determine those geographical areas where icing would be a problem for aircraft; and 3) Develop an alternate data collection scheme which could be used in lieu of flying aircraft to obtain icing data. Realistic methods are discussed for identifying potentially severe icing geographical regions of the Northern Hemisphere. A useful method to calculate the liquid water content of a remote region (using satellite data) is described. The collection of nonconus aircraft is shown and data is presented.
