Book Synopsis Effects of Clear-cutting and Alternative Silvicultural Systems on Wildlife in Ontario's Boreal Mixedwoods by : Christopher Herbert Richard Wedeles
Download or read book Effects of Clear-cutting and Alternative Silvicultural Systems on Wildlife in Ontario's Boreal Mixedwoods written by Christopher Herbert Richard Wedeles and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews the potential impacts of alternative silvicultural systems in Ontario boreal mixedwood forests on individual species and groups of wildlife. Begins with an overview of the ecology of boreal mixedwoods and a discussion of some of the concepts relevant to the later sections of the report, such as biodiversity. Alternative silvicultural systems are then reviewed, including modified clear-cut systems and the shelterwood system. The next four chapters cover habitat affiliations and the stand-level and large-scale effects of those silvicultural systems on the following categories of wildlife: birds, small mammals such as rabbits and squirrels, ungulates (moose, caribou), and furbearers with small, intermediate, and large home ranges.
Book Synopsis Simulating Forest Growth and Carbon Dynamics of the Lake Abitibi Model Forest in Northeastern Ontario by : Xiaolu Zhou
Download or read book Simulating Forest Growth and Carbon Dynamics of the Lake Abitibi Model Forest in Northeastern Ontario written by Xiaolu Zhou and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Ontario Forest Research Institute. This book was released on 2004 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study assessed the temporal and spatial variability in forest growth & carbon storage to provide a comprehensive estimate of the carbon budget for boreal ecosystems in the Lake Abitibi Model Forest in northern Ontario. In the study, stand-level growth & carbon dynamics were simulated using TRIPLEX1.0, a new process-based forest growth & carbon dynamics model. The model was recently calibrated & tested using field measurements collected in Ontario, and was validated using 49 permanent sample plots in the Model Forest. Simulated carbon storage (net primary productivity, forest biomass, and soil carbon) are compared with field data and results from other studies on Canadian boreal forests. Estimates of carbon based on stand variables & analysis of the net carbon balance suggest whether the Model Forest ecosystem was acting as a carbon sink. The results provide information needed by local forest managers to develop ecological & carbon-based indicators and to monitor the sustainability of their forest ecosystems.

Book Synopsis Experimental Habitat Fragmentation and Simulation of Landscape Dynamics in the Boreal Mixedwood by : S. G. Cumming
Download or read book Experimental Habitat Fragmentation and Simulation of Landscape Dynamics in the Boreal Mixedwood written by S. G. Cumming and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a study of about 74,000 square kilometres of mixedwood boreal forest in northern Alberta, with the main objective of acquiring, synthesising, and applying information on the response of the forest to broad-scale timber harvesting. Study methodology involved analysis of landscape patterns and species-specific population attributes in the area, followed by development of a model of landscape dynamics including components of vegetation zonation, successional change, and disturbance regimes (notably fire). The model includes a new, non-spatial fires history model developed from provincial fire history data. Simulation of the effects of logging in the study area was performed by TARDIS, a specially developed spatial harvest schedule simulator. A sub-project of the study involved an experimental study of how forest fragmentation induced by timber harvesting affects the community and population dynamics on non-game birds in aspen-dominated forest. In the experiment, fragments of old mixedwood forest, from one to 100 hectares in size, were isolated from adjacent forest and bird populations documented before and after isolation. A correlation matrix revealed relationships between bird species densities and habitat variables. Concludes with a systematic comparison of three spatial forest inventory data sets which revealed discrepancies in estimated forest composition.
Book Synopsis Boreal Forest Succession in Ontario by : M. Drescher
Download or read book Boreal Forest Succession in Ontario written by M. Drescher and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest succession can be viewed, from a tree-centric point of view, as the temporal pattern of changes in tree species composition that occur following a disturbance that destroyed the existing forest cover, and includes the initial re-establishment of the forest cover. Fire is one such natural disturbance in boreal forests. The broad goal of the work reported here was to explore the body of boreal forest succession knowledge, to elucidate its strengths, weaknesses, and gaps, and to quantify its levels of uncertainty.--Document.

Download or read book Northwestern Ontario Forest Ecosystem Interpretations written by G. D. Racey and published by Thunder Bay : Northwestern Ontario Forest Technology Development Unit, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1989 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guide to assist in the application of the Northwestern Ontario forest ecosystem classification to forest management in northwestern Ontario. Interpretations relate vegetation, soil, site, and climatic factors to limitations or opportunities for forest management. The guide introduces the concept of forest ecosystem interpretations; presents the concept as a method of applying the classification to site-specific management through a set of generalized treatment units that may be further adapted to accommodate local variations in site or climate; describes some basic silvicultural interpretations, followed by interpretations for wildlife; and deals with incorporation of the system into operational forestry surveys.
