Book excerpt: Ever since British soldiers returning from India in the mid-nineteenth century introduced their homeland to a fast-paced ball game on horseback, polo has remained the quintessential British sport. Although its origins lie in Asia, British pioneers are credited with both modernizing the game and spurring its spread worldwide. This volume chronicles the history of polo in the British Isles from its beginnings in the 1860s through the summer of 2011. It recounts the development of polo clubs, including the rise and fall of once mighty citadels of the game; describes the major competitions and many of the lesser tournaments in England and Ireland; and gives particular attention to international contests. Biographical sketches of top players, from early innovators to current superstars, and reflections on current issues affecting the game, including the rise of commercialism and the decrease of civility and sportsmanship, complete this vivid panorama of British polo.

Book excerpt: "The value and usefulness of horses depend to a great extent on how well they are trained. The horse is taught to do things by the association of ideas. A definite word should always be used for the same command. The word "whoa" means stop to him for the reason that he has been trained to stop when he hears that word. Begin the training early and later lessons will not be difficult. Handle the colt regularly, as frequent short lessons are of more value than occasional long ones. The horse does things largely because of habit, and therefore much care should be exercised in establishing good habits. Kindness is essential in training horses. Few horses are inherently vicious, but many are made vicious by carelessness or brutality. To train horses successfully a man needs to exercise patience, gentleness, and firmness. Overloading the young horse is apt to cause balkiness. Punishing him for something that he can not do may also have the same result. The well-trained horse that "walks up on the bit" is demanded by city trade. This bulletin describes methods of properly breaking and training colts raised on the average farm, and is not intended as a treatise on the training of horses for special purposes, such as trotters, saddle horses, hunters, polo ponies, etc. The training of such horses requires the services of men especially skilled in particular phases of horsemanship and should not be attempted by the novice." -- p. ii

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Married to the empire, Mary A. Procida provides a new approach to the growing history of women and empire by situating women at the centre of the practices and policies of British imperialism. Rebutting interpretations that have marginalized women in the empire, this book demonstrates that women were crucial to establishing and sustaining the British Raj in India from the "High Noon" of imperialism in the late nineteenth century through to Indian independence in 1947. Using three separate modes of engagement with imperialism – domesticity, violence, and race – Procida demonstrates the many and varied ways in which British women, particularly the wives of imperial officials, created a role for themselves in the empire. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including memoirs, novels, interviews, and government records, the book examines how marriage provided a role for women in the empire, looks at the home as a site for the construction of imperial power, analyses British women's commitment to violence as a means of preserving the empire, and discusses the relationship among Indian and British men and women. Married to the empire is essential reading to students of British imperial history and women's history, as well as those with an interest in the wider history of the British Empire.

Book excerpt: How does a Black kid from North Philly wind up playing polo? The much-anticipated sequel to Ghetto Cowboy, now a major motion picture starring Idris Elba and Stranger Things's Caleb McLaughlin. When Cole moves in with his dad, Harp, he thinks life will be sweet--just him and his horse, Boo, hanging out with Philadelphia's urban cowboys. But when Harp says he has to get a job, Cole winds up as a stable hand for the polo team at George Washington Military Academy, where the players are rich, white, and stuck-up--all except Ruthie, the team's first and only girl, who's determined to show the others she can beat them at their own game. As Cole and Ruthie become friends--and maybe more--he starts imagining his future, maybe even at the academy. But between long workdays, arrogant polo players, and a cousin trying to pull Cole into his dangerous business, that future seems remote. Will Cole find the courage to stand and be seen in a world determined to keep him out? With striking illustrations by Jesse Joshua Watson, celebrated author G. Neri's novel weaves themes of tenacity and community into a rousing sports story inspired by Philadelphia's real-life urban cowboys and polo players.
