Many are familiar with the ideas of Copernicus, Descartes, and Galileo. But here the reader is also introduced to lesser known ideas and contributors to the Scientific Revolution, such as the mathematical Bernoulli Family and Andreas Vesalius, whose anatomical charts revolutionized the study of the human body. More marginal characters include the magician Robert Fludd. The encyclopedia also discusses subjects like Arabic science and the bizarre history of blood transfusions, and institutions like the Universities of Padua and Leiden, which were dominant forces in academic medicine and science.
Book Synopsis Spirits and Clocks by : Dennis Des Chene
Download or read book Spirits and Clocks written by Dennis Des Chene and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the basis of modern biology is Cartesian, Descartes's theories of biology have been more often ridiculed than studied. Yet, Dennis Des Chene demonstrates, the themes, arguments, and vocabulary of his mechanistic biology pervade the writings of many seventeenth-century authors. In his illuminating account of Cartesian physiology in its historical context, Des Chene focuses on the philosopher's innovative reworking of that field, including the nature of life, the problem of generation, and the concepts of health and illness. Des Chene begins by surveying works that Descartes would likely have encountered, from late Aristotelian theories of the soul to medical literature and treatises on machines. The Cartesian theory of vital operations is examined with particular attention to the generation of animals. Des Chene also considers the role of the machine-model in furnishing a method in physiology, the ambiguities of the notion of machine, and of Descartes's problem of simulation. Finally, he looks at the various kinds of unity of the body, both in itself and in its union with the soul. Spirits and Clocks continues Des Chene's highly regarded exploration—begun in his previous book, Life's Form—of the scholastic and Cartesian sciences as well as the dialogue between these two worldviews.

Book Synopsis De Ratione Motus Musculorum by : William Croone
Download or read book De Ratione Motus Musculorum written by William Croone and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 2000 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When William Croone published his small treatise, "De ratione motus musculorum" in 1664, it represented one of the earliest attempts to explicate muscle contraction in terms of the then current mechanical & chemical concepts. The work is significant not only because it provides an informative overview of the difficulties inherent in addressing the question of how muscles contract, but also because it derives from a series of experiments that form a logical framework for the notion that expanding muscle, like a bladder filled with air or water, can exert a force capable of moving parts of the body against considerable restraint. This vol. contains a brief biography of Croone; an introduction to his ideas & experiments; list of references; & the text in Latin facsimile & English translation. Illus.
Book Synopsis The Melancholy Android by : Eric G. Wilson
Download or read book The Melancholy Android written by Eric G. Wilson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Melancholy Android is a psychological study of the impulses behind the creation of androids. Exploring three imaginative figures—the mummy, the golem, and the automaton—and their appearances in myth, religion, literature, and film, Eric G. Wilson tracks the development of android-building and examines the lure of artificial doubles untroubled by awareness of self. Drawing from the works of philosophers Ficino, Kleist, Freud, and Jung; writers Goethe, Coleridge, Shelley, and Poe; and movies such as Metropolis, The Mummy, and Blade Runner, this book not only offers a range of sites from which to analyze the relationship between mind and machine, but also considers a pressing paradoxical dilemma—loving machines we want to hate.
