Book excerpt: Excerpt from Idealism and the Theory of Knowledge Since the publication of Kant's great work, almost all discussion of the theory of knowledge has turned upon the relation of the object to the subject or of the content of our experience to the formal character of our thinking. In some sense, therefore, we may call all modern theories of knowledge idealistic, and most of them have been so called by their authors. But this does not carry us very far: for the word idealism has been used with so many shades of meaning that it is loaded with misleading associations. It has even, it may be feared, led to the confusion with each other of philosophies which have almost nothing in common. It becomes, therefore, a matter of some importance to disentangle the various senses in which the term has been employed, and the attempt to do so may perhaps furnish the best starting-point for a consideration of the real issues involved in the question. Now with Plato, who first brought the word into philosophical use, an idea meant something that was primarily and emphatically objective. The idea of a thing was, as he constantly puts it, the thing itself. 'The good itself,' "the beautiful itself," the one itself, are the permanent objective realities to which all our conceptions of goodness, beauty and unity point, as distinguished from their phenomenal appearance; and the thought that they are present to our minds, or accessible to our consciousness, though never absent, is secondary and derivative. Many scholars know Lotze chieﬂy as a realist, and class his philosophy with the anti-idealism which is so com mon at the present time. From this point of view he is attacked by critics who regard him as the enemy of all true philosophy, and his realism as the antithesis of sound idealism.l On the other hand there are those who sympathize with Lotze, and agree that all knowledge is empirical but these critics are not satisfied because he does not renounce entirely the philosophical method.2 Others who identify his idealism with an abstract monism find in Lotze an explicit realism as the kernel of his system, and main tain that any attempt'to formtxlate his philosophy idealistically is wrong, and makes Lotze say just the Opposite of that which he intended to uphold. In general nature signifies that which operates, acts, performs without the assistance of the intellect. Now, that this is really identical with what we find in ourselves as will is the general theme of this second book, and also of the essay, "Ueber den Willen in der Natur." The possibility of this fundamental knowledge depends upon the fact that in its the will is directly lighted by the intellect, which here appears as self-consciousness; otherwise we could just as little arrive at a fuller knowledge of it within us as without us, and must for ever stop at inscrutable forces of nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Knowledge: A Contribution to Some Problems of Logic and Metaphysics The reaction against the scientific spirit, so characteristic of our generation, has shown itself in the philosophic world in the decay of what has been called the English school. Along with many defects and limitations, that school, from Bacon and Locke to Mill and Spencer, has had the merit of dealing, or attempting to deal, in a sympathetic spirit with the problems and methods of the sciences. The shortcomings of empiricism have been pointed out adequately enough now by the brilliant series of critics who have drawn their inspira tion from other sources, and the danger at present seems to be that the real services of the English school should be forgotten. On the other hand, the newer movement in our thought, now itself nearly thirty years old, has hardly fulfilled its promise of giving us on metaphysical grounds a better synthesis than could be hoped for from science. As time has gone on, the purely negative and critical side of the movement has tended to gain the upper hand; and in the great metaphysical work of the keenest intellect which the school has produced, while everyone admits the force of the negative dialectics, such con structive conceptions as remain seem scarcely at home.
