Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bridges the gap between general plasma physics lectures and the real world problems in MHD stability. In order to support the understanding of concepts and their implication, it refers to real world problems such as toroidal mode coupling or nonlinear evolution in a conceptual and phenomenological approach. Detailed mathematical treatment will involve classical linear stability analysis and an outline of more recent concepts such as the ballooning formalism. The book is based on lectures that the author has given to Master and PhD students in Fusion Plasma Physics. Due its strong link to experimental results in MHD instabilities, the book is also of use to senior researchers in the field, i.e. experimental physicists and engineers in fusion reactor science. The volume is organized in three parts. It starts with an introduction to the MHD equations, a section on toroidal equilibrium (tokamak and stellarator), and on linear stability analysis. Starting from there, the ideal MHD stability of the tokamak configuration will be treated in the second part which is subdivided into current driven and pressure driven MHD. This includes many examples with reference to experimental results for important MHD instabilities such as kinks and their transformation to RWMs, infernal modes, peeling modes, ballooning modes and their relation to ELMs. Finally the coverage is completed by a chapter on resistive stability explaining reconnection and island formation. Again, examples from recent tokamak MHD such as sawteeth, CTMs, NTMs and their relation to disruptions are extensively discussed.

Book excerpt: A study of the MHD stability properties of bean-shaped tokamak plasmas is presented. For ballooning modes, while increased indentation gives larger .beta. stable configurations, the existence and accessibility of the second stable region is sensitive to the pressure and safety factor profiles. The second stable region appears at lower .beta. values for large aspect ratio and moderately high q-values. Finite-Larmor-radius (FLR) kinetic effects can significantly improve the stability properties. For low q (

Book excerpt: Extensive numerical studies of ideal MHD instabilities have been carried out to gain insight into the parametric dependence of critical .beta.'s in tokamaks. The large number of interrelated equilibrium quantities involved in establishing a critical .beta. has demanded a careful, systematic survey in order to isolate this dependence. The results of this survey establish the scaling with geometrical quantities including aspect ratio, elongation, and triangularity in the parameter regimes appropriate for both current and reactor-sized plasmas. A moderate dependence on the pressure profile and a strong variation with the current profile is found. The principal result is that for aspect ratio R/a approximately equal to 3, critical .beta.'s are of the order of 2% for circular cross sections and 5% for plasmas with elongation K approximately equal to 2; somewhat higher values could be achieved with more optimal shaping. Finally, sequences of equilibria have been analyzed to compare critical .beta. as a function of toroidal mode number n. We conclude that the infinite-n analytic ballooning theory provides a sufficient condition for ideal MHD internal mode stability. Low-n free boundary modes appear to set a lower limit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of shear in determining the ideal MHD stability properties of tokamaks is discussed. In particular, we assess the effects of low shear within the plasma upon pressure-driven modes. The standard ballooning theory is shown to break down, as the shear is reduced and the growth rate is shown to be an oscillatory function of n, the toroidal mode number, treated as a continuous parameter. The oscillations are shown to depend on both the pressure and safety-factor profiles. When the shear is sufficiently weak, the oscillations can result in bands of unstable n values which are present even when the standard ballooning theory predicts complete stability. These instabilities are named ''infernal modes.'' The occurrence of these instabilities at integer n is shown to be a sensitive function of q-axis, raising the possibility of a sharp onset as plasma parameters evolve. 20 refs., 31 figs.

Book excerpt: This paper will give an overview of the some of the methods which are used to simulate the ideal MHD properties of tokamak plasmas. A great deal of the research in this field is necessarily numerical and the substantial progress made during the past several years has roughly paralleled the continuing availability of more advanced supercomputers. These have become essential to accurately model the complex configurations necessary for achieving MHD stable reactor grade conditions. Appropriate tokamak MHD equilibria will be described. Then the stability properties is discussed in some detail, emphasizing the difficulties of obtaining stable high [beta] discharges in plasmas in which the current is mainly ohmically driven and thus demonstrating the need for tailoring the current and pressure profiles of the plasma away from the ohmic state. The outline of this paper will roughly follow the physics development to attain the second region of stability in the PBX-M device at The Princeton Plasmas Physics Laboratory.

Book excerpt: Neutral beam heating has recently been installed on the START tight aspect ratio or 'spherical tokamak' (R/a greater than or equal to 1.2), using equipment loaned by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA. This has led to significant improvements in plasma performance - for example, an increased Murakami parameter, n(c)R/B. High central (similar to 48%) and volume averaged (similar to 8.5%) beta-values have been obtained. Calculations show that Troyon scaling still holds at low aspect ratio (with coefficients similar to 4 for ballooning modes, similar to 5 for link modes), indicating that the START device should reach still higher values of beta. It is found that the limiting edge-q rises for aspect ratios less than approximately 1.5, in agreement with theoretical calculations. Energy confinement at low aspect ratio is as good as, or better than, most H-mode scalings from conventional devices (up to twice ITER-93H) - with NBI there is no evidence so far for a power degradation (although P-NBI less than or equal to 1.5P(OH)). In both Ohmic and NBI plasmas, the scrape-off layer (SOL) in double null geometry is narrow, providing a valuable test of SOL models. As reported previously, START is resilient against current-terminating disruptions. It does, however, have more benign internal reconnection events when approaching density and current limits which show the initial features of a disruption (e.g, transient I-p rise and beta(p) fall). A model based on helicity conservation shows that, at tight aspect ratio, smaller falls (and sometimes rises) in edge-q result from falls in beta(p) and I-i, suggesting a possible explanation for the resilience to disruptions of START.
