Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In boundless space countless shining spheres, about each of which, and illuminated by its light, there revolve a dozen or so of smaller ones, hot at the core and covered with a hard, cold crust, upon whose surface there have been generated from a mouldy film beings which live and know—this is what presents itself to us in experience as the truth, the real, the world. Yet for a thinking being it is a precarious position to stand upon one of those numberless spheres moving freely in boundless space without knowing whence or whither, and to be only one of innumerable similar beings who throng and press and toil, ceaselessly and quickly arising and passing away in time, which has no beginning and no end; moreover, nothing permanent but matter alone and the recurrence of the same varied organised forms, by means of certain ways and channels which are there once for all. All that empirical science can teach is only the more exact nature and law of these events. But now at last modern philosophy especially through Berkeley and Kant, has called ] to mind that all this is first of all merely a phenomenon of the brain, and is affected with such great, so many, and such different subjective conditions that its supposed absolute reality vanishes away, and leaves room for an entirely different scheme of the world, which consists of what lies at the foundation of that phenomenon, i.e., what is related to it as the thing in itself is related to its mere manifestation. “The world is my idea” is, like the axioms of Euclid, a proposition which every one must recognise as true as soon as he understands it; although it is not a proposition which every one understands as soon as he hears it. To have brought this proposition to clear consciousness, and in it the problem of the relation of the ideal and the real, i.e., of the world in the head to the world outside the head, together with the problem of moral freedom, is the distinctive feature of modern philosophy. For it was only after men had spent their labour for thousands of years upon a mere philosophy of the object that they discovered that among the many things that make the world so obscure and doubtful the first and chiefest is this, that however immeasurable and massive it may be, its existence yet hangs by a single thread; and this is the actual consciousness in which it exists. This condition, to which the existence of the world is irrevocably subject, marks it, in spite of all empirical reality, with the stamp of ideality, and therefore of mere ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly it is being recognized that consumer behavior may be a key trigger in the march toward sustainable development. Several lines of psychological theory and approaches have been developed relatively independently, each of which may provide major implications and action points on how consumers might be moved toward more sustainable behavior. This book is the first that brings together this variety of perspectives and theoretical angles around the common ambition of sustainable development. The contributors are all leading social scientists in the field of consumer behavior who met the challenge to sketch out their theoretical perspectives, but also to go beyond their normal theorizing and think out of the box in order to show how these theoretical perspectives might be made actionable in terms of key managerial and policy perspectives toward sustainable development. The result is a book that shows a wealth of information and approaches the question of how to encourage sustainable behavior from a myriad of divergent perspectives. This should stimulate scientists and policy-makers alike to find similarities, differences, and synergies between state-of-the-art psychological thinking about how to most effectively stimulate sustainable consumer behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Volume, is the first of 2 volumes that are being released together, but under separate covers. Volume 1, contains the instructional guide to teach special education students and English language learners to be successful writers, in 7 easy steps. In view of the increasing educational dropout rate of these special populations, this unique, simple program offers encouragement, hope, and success to students who are struggling in developing their writing skills. Not only is this program easy to learn and remember, but students are able to increase their writing skills in shorter periods of time. This Volume contains five, no-frills, bare-bones lesson plans along with teacher comments. It also includes reproducible Master Guide Sheets, and student Self-evaluation forms. The simplified color coding system is used as a consistent, predictable routine in each writing activity. This program, like no other, promotes student self-confidence and renewed interest in learning. The words, "I can't write" turn into "Yes, I can!" However, the best kept secret is that these 7 easy steps will help all students. Listen to what the kids are saying: "I had a lot of fun with Steps 1 to 7. They really helped me with my work," (comments from an 8th grade student). "The first thing I learned was Steps 1-7. I learned how to write better paragraphs," (comments from an 8th grade student). "I learned how to web my ideas using complete sentences," (comments from an 8th grade student). "I did really well on my writing assessment because I used the 7 steps," (comments from a 9th grade student) "I couldn't write a complete sentence. With these steps, I can write complete paragraphs and essays for Language Arts and Geography. I did well in my writing test, too," (comments from a 9th grade student). Listen to what teachers are saying: "I have been in meetings where parents have commented how effective her writing program has been with helping their kids. I've often heard parents express their gratitude for their child's success due to Ms. Posey's teaching," (comments from a junior high teacher). "After the 9th graders took the writing assessment, several of the students commented on how good they felt about their writing abilities that were a direct result of the efforts of Ms. Posey," (comments from a junior high teacher). "Her strategies and writing techniques resulted in 50% improvement, an impressive increase, in the scores of resource students for the 9th grade direct writing assessment. This is the highest achievement I've seen in my 30 years of teaching," (comments from a secondary special education teacher).

When Solène Marchand, the thirty-nine-year-old owner of a prestigious art gallery in Los Angeles, takes her daughter, Isabelle, to meet her favorite boy band, she does so reluctantly and at her ex-husband’s request. The last thing she expects is to make a connection with one of the members of the world-famous August Moon. But Hayes Campbell is clever, winning, confident, and posh, and the attraction is immediate. That he is all of twenty years old further complicates things. What begins as a series of clandestine trysts quickly evolves into a passionate relationship. It is a journey that spans continents as Solène and Hayes navigate each other’s disparate worlds: from stadium tours to international art fairs to secluded hideaways in Paris and Miami. And for Solène, it is as much a reclaiming of self, as it is a rediscovery of happiness and love. When their romance becomes a viral sensation, and both she and her daughter become the target of rabid fans and an insatiable media, Solène must face how her new status has impacted not only her life, but the lives of those closest to her.

Conquer Sugar Cravings in Three Short Weeks Sugar Free 3 is a revolutionary new plan based on the latest research and science. It's not a diet. It's not a detox. It's not a cleanse. It's a three-week program to reset your entire approach to food and eating. You'll discover why sugar makes you fat (and sick), where it's lurking, and how to live happier and healthier without it. As the former Editor-in-Chief of Women's Health and Cosmopolitan, Michele Promaulayko has spent the last decade at the forefront of the newest research about how sugar and artificial sweeteners affect your mind and body. Giving up these “added sugars” can lead to weight loss and decreased diabetes risk, sure, but also better skin, better moods, and thicker hair. Even if your baseline is “I feel OK,” you don’t know how much better you could be feeling once off the sweet stuff. Within just days, Sugar Free 3 users began to see and feel results: smoother, glowing skin, greater energy and clarity of thought, improved mood, better digestion and less bloat, better sleep, and significant weight loss—up to 7 pounds in the first week! “Michele has created a plan that’s easy, effective, and for everyone.
