Book excerpt: Idalia: Or, The Unfortunate Mistress (1723) is a novel by Eliza Haywood. Blending tragedy and comedy, Haywood explores the intersection of ambition, family, and desire to reveal how women so often fall victim to the whims of villainous men. Idalia: Or, The Unfortunate Mistress is considered a prime example of the popular genre of amatory fiction, which often used love triangles to expose the imbalance between male and female desire in a patriarchal society. Idalia is a young woman at the center of Venetian social life. Having lost her mother at a young age, she lacks the guidance necessary for navigating the world of courtship. When her father rejects her suitor Florez, a handsome, rakish man, Idalia turns her attentions to Don Ferdinand, with whom she maintains a steady correspondence. When his friend Henriquez falls in love with her, the two men decide to fight for Idalia’s affections. Their duel ends in death for both men, leaving Idalia to turn her attentions elsewhere. Soon, she attempts to enter a convent in order to live chastely, beyond the reach of men. But the world has other plans. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Eliza Haywood’s Idalia: Or, The Unfortunate Mistress is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English Novel in History 1700-1780 provides students with specific contexts for the early novel in response to a new understanding of eigtheenth-century Britain. It traces the social and moral representations of the period in extended readings of the major novelists, as well as evaluatiing the importance of lesser known ones. John Richetti traces the shifting subject matter of the novel, discussing: * scandalous and amatory fictions * criminal narratives of the early part of the century * the more disciplined, realistic, and didactic strain that appears in the 1740's and 1750's * novels promoting new ideas about the nature of domestic life * novels by women and how they relate to the shift of subject matter This original and useful book revises traditional literary history by considering novels from those years in the context of the transformation of Britain in the eighteenth century.

This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first full-length study of the figure of the female libertine in late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century literature, Laura Linker examines heroines appearing in literature by John Dryden, Aphra Behn, Catharine Trotter, Delariviere Manley, and Daniel Defoe. Linker argues that this figure, partially inspired by Epicurean ideas found in Lucretius's De rerum natura, interrogates gender roles and assumptions and emerges as a source of considerable tension during the late Stuart and early Georgian periods. Witty and rebellious, the female libertine becomes a frequent satiric target because of her transgressive sexuality. As a result of negative portrayals of lady libertines, women writers begin to associate their libertine heroines with the pathos figures they read in French texts of sensibilité. Beginning with a discussion of Charles II's mistresses, Linker shows that these women continue to serve as models for the female libertine in literature long after their "reigns" at court ended. Her study places the female libertine within her cultural, philosophical, and literary contexts and suggests new ways of considering women's participation and the early novel, which prominently features female libertines as heroines of sensibility.

Book excerpt: This book considers why narrative realism in literature is seen as a 'full account' of 'real life' and the individual self. Unconventionally, Carnell shows that the formal conventions of narrative realism emerged in the seventeenth century in response to an explosion of partisan writings that put into play competing versions of political selfhood.
