Her search for the desperate victim leads from the corridors of Philly Prep to the cobblestone streets of Society Hill, and the smooth avenues of the upscale Main Line. Along the way Amanda learns a startling lesson about deliberate brutality - and its unpredictable and cold-blooded consequences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1800 and 1880 approximately 6500 Dutch Jews immigrated to the United States to join the hundreds who had come during the colonial era. Although they numbered less than one-tenth of all Dutch immigrants and were a mere fraction of all Jews in America, the Dutch Jews helped build American Jewry and did so with a nationalistic flair. Like the other Dutch immigrant group, the Jews demonstrated the salience of national identity and the strong forces of ethnic, religious, and cultural institutions. They immigrated in family migration chains, brought special job skills and religious traditions, and founded at least three ethnic synagogues led by Dutch rabbis. The Forerunners offers the first detailed history of the immigration of Dutch Jews to the United States and to the whole American diaspora. Robert Swierenga describes the life of Jews in Holland during the Napoleonic era and examines the factors that caused them to emigrate, first to the major eastern seaboard cities of the United States, then to the frontier cities of the Midwest, and finally to San Francisco. He provides a detailed look at life among the Dutch Jews in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New Orleans. This is a significant volume for readers interested in Jewish history, religious history, and comparative studies of religious declension. Immigrant and social historians likewise will be interested in this look at a religious minority group that was forced to change in the American environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four Sisters By: Glenn Willis Pace Four Sisters is an intriguing, action-packed story, based on the age old, continuous struggle between law enforcement and the criminal element… good versus evil. The story begins when a deal is struck by the Brotherhood of America’s Salvation (BOAS), a group of powerful, wealthy individuals interested in hand-picking the officials running cities all over the United States. Their target is a man named Waters who is running for mayor of Philadelphia. To this end, the Brotherhood enters a $26 million contract with a group known as the Correctors, to whom they assign the task of ‘eliminating’ this man on Election Day, should he be the winner. The Correctors are a group of highly-educated, well-trained, and very experienced assassins. This group consists of men and women with the signs of the Zodiac as their code names, with Taurus as their leader. This assignment is particularly difficult because of a twenty-five-year-old pact made with a man on the other side of the law known as Archer, to stay out of Philly. Not only is Archer a retired cop, but his four daughters are all in law enforcement. The pact has caused these two groups to become intertwined, unbeknownst to the four sisters. Make your way through the labyrinth of plot twists and turns with this family as they become aware of the identity of their combatants and the danger involved. Who will win in the end and at what cost?

Here is a remarkable rendering of that fateful time, told with humanity and humor. Decision in Philadelphia is the best popular history of the Constitutional Convention; in it, the life and times of eighteenth century America not only come alive, but the very human qualities of the men who framed the document are brought provocatively into focus-casting many of the Founding Fathers in a new light. A celebration of how and why our Constitution came into being, Decision in Philadelphia is also a testament of the American spirit at its finest.

Book excerpt: Veteran Boston goaltender Jean Pierre Savard sees stardom and the money it brings as fate's make-up call for a life in which he lost his father, his wife, and most of his self confidence for anything not involving saves or sex. Now late in his career, Savard and his teammate and best friend, Cam Carter, are trying to fulfill their boyhood dreams of winning a Stanley Cup before they retire. A surprise late-season trade pits the friends against each other in a playoff series both could lose but only one can win. Saved takes the reader into the rinks, dressing rooms, planes, buses, and hotels that are the backdrop to the long grind of an NHL season. That grind is made bearable by the likes of players such as Bruno Govoni, whose cell phone ring tone is the orgasmic moaning of a porn star Loretta (Lash) LaRue; of Phil "Flipside" Palmer, the only person besides the Kingsmen who knows all the words to "Louie Louie" or that "Child of the Moon" was the flipside of the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash"; and team enforcer Kevin Quigley, who claims all his fights are retaliations, "but sometimes I retaliate first." Most sports novels bring the game to the reader. Saved brings the reader to the game. Praise for Jack Falla "Falla's graphic portrayal of a violent sport (and its colorful players) and his insider's view of how hockey is played, coached, and officiated is exciting, surefire entertainment." -- Publishers Weekly on Saved "Literary hot chocolate that will warm your heart." ---Robert Lipsyte, The New York Times, on Home Ice "The best hockey book ever." ---John Buccigross, ESPN sportscaster, on Home Ice "Possibly the best hockey book since Ken Dryden's The Game." ---Toronto Globe and Mail, on Home Ice

Caught Dead in Philadelphia When Philly Prep English teacher Amanda Pepper finds a murdered colleague in her living room, she needs to clear her name—while trying not to become the next victim. But the only clue to the real killer’s identity is a Winnie-the-Pooh locket. Good thing handsome homicide detective C.K. Mackenzie is on her side. Philly Stakes When Amanda tries to get her students in the Christmas spirit by serving a meal for the homeless, the plan fatally backfires. Alexander “Sandy” Clausen, a politically ambitious parent, turns the event into a lavishly catered photo-op. But when Sandy is killed and his troubled daughter confesses, Amanda gets wrapped up in the investigation with her sometime boyfriend, Det. C.K. Mackenzie. I’d Rather Be in Philadelphia Amanda is sorting through donated books when she comes across a note that reads like an anonymous cry for help. Desperately searching for the troubled woman, Amanda locates her just in time to find the woman’s husband murdered. With the woman wrongly suspected, it’s up to Amanda and Det. C.K. MacKenzie to see the real killer get booked. “[Roberts is] the Dorothy Parker of mystery writers . . . giving more wit per page than most writers give per book.” —Nancy Pickard, award-winning author of the Jenny Cain series
