Download or read book Sparidae written by Michalis A. Pavlidis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sparidae, commonly known as breams and porgies, is a family of fishes of the order Perciformes, and includes about 115 species of mainly marine coastal fish of high economic value, exploited and farmed for human consumption, as well as for recreational purposes. This landmark publication brings together a huge wealth of information on the biology and culture of gilthead sea bream and other Sparidae species. Commencing with an overview of the current status of aquaculture of Sparidae, the book continues with comprehensive coverage of the family’s phylogeny, evolution and taxonomy, stress and welfare issues, and reproduction and broodstock management. Further chapters include coverage of early development and metabolism, production systems, nutrition, quality, and health management. A final cutting-edge chapter looks at genomic-proteomic research in Sparidae and its application to genetic improvement. With contributions from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australasia and North America, carefully drawn together and edited by Professor M. Pavlidis and Dr C. C. Mylonas, themselves well known for their work in this area, Sparidae is an essential purchase for anyone working with this important family of fishes. Fish biologists, fish farmers, aquaculture researchers, and fisheries managers will all find much of great use and interest within this book’s covers. All universities and research establishments where biological sciences, aquaculture and fisheries science are studied and taught should have copies of this excellent book on their shelves.

Download or read book Estuary written by William Froneman and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estuaries are regarded among the most ecologically threatened ecosystems worldwide largely due to poor land use practices within their catchment areas, freshwater abstraction, coastal development, and resource exploitation. Moreover, these systems act as repositories for various anthropogenic contaminants. The establishment and successful implementation of conservation and management strategies are critically dependent on understanding the links among physicochemical, hydrological, and biological variables within these systems. The book provides a comprehensive overview of selected topics including modeling of water exchange between estuaries and the ocean, sediment geochemistry and mangrove health, climate variability and hydrology, and pesticides in estuaries and ecosystem functioning for various estuaries including permanently open, mangrove, and intermittently open/closed systems in both the northern and the southern hemispheres.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of the modern-day coelacanth will forever be linked with the name of JLB Smith. An intense, irascible, eccentric man, JLB (as he was widely known) and his long-suffering wife Margaret were both remarkable South African scientists who changed the course of the biological sciences. Best known for their research on the coelacanth, they also contributed in many other ways to the scientific study of fishes (ichthyology) and related fields. The first comprehensive biography about JLB and Margaret Smith. Traces their formative years and serendipitous meeting, leading up to the discovery of the coelacanth, and the tumultuous years that followed. Details their punitive work ethic, eccentric and rugged lifestyle, and their astonishingly productive lives. A story awash with adventure, travel, discovery, risk-taking, near-death experiences – and their extraordinary contribution to science. Illustrated with black-and-white images of the Smiths’ fascinating lives, as well as a 16-page colour section, Mike Bruton’s lively account fills a scientific and biographical niche and will become a classic of the South African scene. Sales points: Important biography of a famous South African couple, lively portrayal of colourful, eccentric, tumultuous lives, with contributions from many other scientists and personalities and illustrated with black-and-white images throughout, and a colour section.
Book Synopsis Phylogenetic Revision of the Fish Families Luvaridae and Kushlukiidae (Acanthuroidei), with a New Genus and Two New Species of Eocene Luvarids by : Aleksandr Fedorovich Bannikov
Download or read book Phylogenetic Revision of the Fish Families Luvaridae and Kushlukiidae (Acanthuroidei), with a New Genus and Two New Species of Eocene Luvarids written by Aleksandr Fedorovich Bannikov and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten synapomorphies are described that support the proposed sister group relationship of the Eocene Kushlukiidae and the Eocene to Recent Luvaridae as the superfamilial clade Luvaroidea at the node between the siganid and zanclid+acanthurid clades of acanthuroid fishes. The Kushlukiidae previously have been known only on the basis of Kushlukia permira Danilchenko from the Eocene of Turkmenistan, but another species of that age is shown to have been present in India; the latter is not given a new specific name because the two specimens of it are only fragments. In addition to the well known Recent species Luvarus imperialis, three fossil species have been referred to the Luvaridae: Proluvarus necopinatus Danilchenko from the Eocene of Turkmenistan is here recognied as a valid species of Luvarus, with Proluvarus becoming a junior synonym of Luvarus; Eoluvarus bondei Sahni and Choudhary from the Eocene of India is shown to be not a luvarid but, rather, a member of the fossil perciform family Exelliidae, the affinities of which family are poorly understood; Luvarus praeimperialis Arambourg from the Oligocene of Iran is shown to be not a luvarid but, rather, a representative of the new genus Aluvarus of such uncertain affinity that we simply place it incertae sedis among the percomorphs. Among the materials used by Danilchenko in the description of Proluvarus necopinatus only the holotype and the five other largest specimens (about 326-495 mm SL) represent that species. All of the other specimens are smaller than about 215 mm SL and represent two new species of a new genus of luvarid, Avitoluvarus dianae and A. mariannae. Numerous derived features are used to define both the Kushlukiidae and Luvaridae. Within the Luvaridae, the preponderance of derived features is found in Luvarus, whereas Avitoluvarus has only two unequivocal synapomorphies. The Luvaroidea, therefore, are represented by the Eocene Kushlukiidae with one genus and two species (Kushlukia permira and K. sp.) and the Luvaridae with one Eocene genus with two species (Avitoluvarus dianae and A. mariannae) and one genus, Luvarus, with one Eocene species, L. necopinatus, and one Recent species, L. imperialis.
