To observe the crushing failure of ice and to characterize the magnitude and nature of ice forces, an experimental study was conducted by pushing vertical, flat indentors through floating ice sheets made up of freshwater, columnar ice. Depending on the velocity of the indentor, ductile or brittle behavior of ice was observed. Microcracks and macrocracks were observed during the tests. The energy used to produce the maximum ice force was found to be approximately the same for different indentor velocities. The positions of the resultant forces were found to be in the center of the contact area. The area of the ice damaged by the first peak loading of the identor was about the same, even when the indentor velocities were different. Acoustic emission signals were measured during indentation experiments, and these were found to correlate with the ice force that produces strain and microcracking in the ice. Keywords: Ice mechanics; Cracking/fracturing; Coastal engineering; Offshore structures; Load distribution; Crushing; Effective pressure; Freshwater ice; Ice forces; Laboratory tests; Macrocracking; Microcracking. Book excerpt: IUTAM-IAHR Symposium on Ice-Structure Interaction Professor Bez Tabarrok, Chairman of the Canadian National Committee (CNC) of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) invited Professor Derek Muggeridge to organize a symposium on ice structure interaction. Dr. Muggeridge readily agreed and prepared a proposal that was endorsed by the CNC and presented to the General Assembly Meeting of IUTAM for their consideration. This Assembly gave its approval and provided the local organizing committee with the names of individuals who were willing to serve on the Scientific Committee. Dr. Muggeridge became chairman of this committee and Dr. Ian Jordaan became co-chairman of this committee as well as chairman of the local organizing committee. The symposium followed the very successful previous meeting, chaired by Professor P. Tryde in Copenhagen, by ten years. Both symposia uti lized Springer-Verlag to publish their proceedings. The Faculty of En gineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland were particul{lXly pleased to host this prestigious symposium as it marked the twentieth anniversary of its Ocean Engineering Research Centre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical expressions for the horizontal and vertical forces exerted by a floating ice sheet against a two-dimensional sloping structure are derived under the assumption that ice is an elastic, homogeneous material. The specific conditions investigated are 1. Quasi-steady form of the governing equation. a. The free end of the semi-infinite ice sheet is subjected to a horizontal force, a vertical force, and a bending moment. Failure of the ice sheet occurs before its free edge becomes fully emerged from or submerged into the water. b. The free end of a semi-infinite ice sheet is subjected only to a vertical force, but failure occurs after the free end has fully emerged from or submerged into the water. c. Finite ice sheet subjected only to a vertical force at one free end which remains at the water surface until failure occurs. 2. Unsteady form of the governing equation for a semi-infinite sheet subjected to only a vertical force at its free end which remains at the water surface until failure occurs. It appears that, for practical applications, the effect of the horizontal force and bending moment at the free end of the ice sheet on the sheet deformation is negligible. It is shown that a finite ice sheet of length at least three times a characteristic length expressed in terms of the ice mechanical properties can be treated as a semi-infinite ice sheet. Also it is shown that when the ice thickness is smaller than a critical value which depends upon the ice mechanical properties and the direction (upward or downward) of the vertical force exerted at the sheet free end, the failure force of the ice sheet is independent of the ice elastic modulus. The analytical results have been verified experimentally, and used in the experimental determination of the bending strength and strain modulus of urea-doped ice.

Book excerpt: The force that floating ice sheets can exert on vertical piles is important to the design of both military and civilian structures. Present design codes call for 400 psi as the crushing strength of ice without regard to the influencing factors and their variation. The forces which drive the ice into the structure can be water currents, wind, or thermal expansion. These driving forces may be large enough the cause the ice to fail at or near the surface. The purpose of this research is to define this limiting force level and gain a better understanding of the failure process in the ice. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just before spring breakup in 1972, 23 in situ tests were conducted on the Pembina River, in Alberta, Canada, to measure ice forces. These tests simulated an ice sheet pushing against a bridge pier. The apparatus utilized a hydraulic ram to push a 5 1/2-in. (14.0-cm)-wide vertical pile section horizontally against the ice sheet, which varied from 11.5 to 19.5 in. (29.2 to 49.5 cm) in thickness. The velocity of the pile was varied from 0.07 to 21 in./sec (0.18 to 53.3 cm/sec) by hydraulic flow control valves. Both flat and round piles were used to represent the pier. Some tests began with the piles a few inches away from the ice sheet, whose edge was cut flat. Other tests began with the pile in contact with the ice sheet. For some of the round pile tests, augered holes were used to provide better initial contact. These in situ test results were compared with the ice force measurements made by other workers on a nearby bridge pier during ice breakup. The in situ test ice forces were about 50% higher than the bridge pier test results. This disagreement was caused by a difference between the sizes of the piles and the size of the pier and a three-day warming of the ice before the ice impacted against the pier. (Author).

Book excerpt: The subject of geomaterial interfaces recognizes the important influences of the interface behaviour on the performance of interfaces involving cementaceous materials such as concrete and steel, ice-structure interfaces, concrete-rock interfaces and interfaces encountered in soil reinforcement. During the past two decades, the subject of geomaterial interfaces has attracted the concerted attention of scientists and engineers both in geomechanics and applied mechanics. These efforts have been largely due to the observation that the conventional idealizations of the behaviour of interfaces between materials by frictionless contact, bonded contact, Coulomb friction or finite friction tend to omit many interesting and important influences of special relevance to geomaterials. The significant manner in which non-linear effects, dilatancy, contact degradation, hardening and softening, etc., can influence the behaviour of the interface is borne out by experimental evidence. As a result, in many instances, the response of the interface can be the governing criterion in the performance of a geomechanics problem. The primary objective of this volume is to provide a documentation of recent advances in the area of geomaterial interfaces. The volume consists of subject groupings which cover ice-structure, soil-structure and steel-concrete interfaces, mechanics of rock and concrete joints and interfaces in discrete systems.
