Book Synopsis Evaluation of the Scan 16-ef Ice Detection System Near Fort Saskatchewan by :
Download or read book Evaluation of the Scan 16-ef Ice Detection System Near Fort Saskatchewan written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research project was initiated to evaluate the usefulness of an ice detection system in combating icy roads and in promoting a safer driving environment. in 1986, a scan 16-ef system was installed on highway 15 along the north saskatchewan river bridge. using visual inspections, the system was determined to be 70% accurate for critical conditions. generally, the system gave overly conservative readings, triggering alerts of conditions that were not perceived to be critical. overall, certain hardware and software enhancements are needed as well as an improvement in the training of the system users to bring the accuracy rate up. a plan to expand the existing stand-alone system to an area-wide network is presented for future reference.

Book Synopsis An Evaluation of Passive Deicing, Mechanical Deicing and Ice Detection by : S. F. Ackley
Download or read book An Evaluation of Passive Deicing, Mechanical Deicing and Ice Detection written by S. F. Ackley and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was found that passive deicing methods do not operate with sufficient reliability to be used in operational situations and that in general, successful use of passive deicers is usually linked to a particular geometry, icing condition or waste energy availability that do not commonly exist at the radome sites of interest. Mechanical deicing was evaluated and test mechanical deicers were constructed and subjected to testing in cold rooms and field-tests at Mt. Washington, N.H. It was found that an inflatable deicing system coupled with a commercially available ice detector could be configured as an automatic deicing system. This system showed success under light and heavy icing conditions and during long periods of icing activity. (Modified author abstract).
Book Synopsis Minimum Operational Performance Specification for Remote On-Ground Ice Detection Systems by : G-12HOT Holdover Time Committee
Download or read book Minimum Operational Performance Specification for Remote On-Ground Ice Detection Systems written by G-12HOT Holdover Time Committee and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS)/Minimum Operational Performance Specification (MOPS) specifies the minimum performance requirements of Remote On-Ground Ice Detection Systems (ROGIDS). These systems are ground-based. They provide information that indicates whether frozen contamination is present on aircraft surfaces.Section 1 provides information required to understand the need for the ROGIDS, ROGIDS characteristics, and tests that are defined in subsequent sections. It describes typical ROGIDS applications and operational objectives and is the basis for the performance criteria stated in Section 3 through Section 5.Section 2 provides reference information, including related documents, abbreviations and definitions.Section 3 contains general design requirements for the ROGIDS.Section 4 contains the Minimum Operational Performance Requirements for the ROGIDS, which define performance in icing conditions likely to be encountered during ground operations.Section 5 describes environmental test conditions that provide laboratory means of testing the overall performance characteristics of the ROGIDS in conditions that may be encountered in actual operations.Section 6 describes recommended test procedures for demonstrating compliance with Sections 3 and 4.Section 7 contains the operational evaluation requirements for verifying the performance of the ROGIDS when installed for in-service use. AS5116, Minimum Operational Performance Specification for Ground Ice Detection Systems, has been cancelled. After review it was determined that the scope for AS5116 was too broad and there is a need for separate standards for Remote On-Ground, Remote On-Board, and In-Situ Sensors. This Minimum Operational Performance Specification, AS5681, provides a standard for Remote On-Ground Ice Detection Systems (ROGIDS).
Book Synopsis Climatic Chamber Tests of a Surface Ice Accretion Measurement System by : Paul Tattelman
Download or read book Climatic Chamber Tests of a Surface Ice Accretion Measurement System written by Paul Tattelman and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climatic chamber tests of an off-the-shelf ice detection system manufactured by Rosemount Engineering Company were conducted to evaluate its capability to determine ice amounts measured on cylinders. One-hour tests were run for a variety of windspeeds, temperatures, and icing conditions. Some longer duration tests, up to 17 hours, were also performed. Analysis of the data indicates that the Rosemount system is highly correlated with the mass of ice measured on the cylinders when the data are divided into freezing rain and rime icing events. The Rosemount system is also highly correlated with ice thickness, but without the pronounced dependence upon the type of icing. In the light of positive test results, a method is proposed for utilizing the Rosemount system for observing ice accretion at the earth's surface. (Author).
