Book excerpt: At first glance, Nora Helmer appears to live the perfect life. She is married to the ambitious banker Torvald and is well provided for. But when she is blackmailed by one of her husband's colleagues, she is forced to re-examine her life along with her role as a frivolous, scatter-brained wife. First published in 1879, A Doll's House scandalized contemporary audiences and rewrote the rules of drama. It challenged notions of women's place in society and questioned every aspect of what constituted good conduct in domestic life. Ibsen's masterpiece was the first serious play to focus on ordinary people in everyday situations rather than on the lives of the upper classes. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Arcturus Classics series brings together high-quality paperback editions of classics works, presented with contemporary graphic cover designs. Together they make a wonderful collection which is perfect for any home library.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... Bastian. I? With whom? Stensgard. Have you really not noticed anything? Yet it's before your very nose. Bastian. You surely don't mean? Stensgard. Your sister Ragna? Yes, it is she. Oh, you don't know how 1 have been moved by the sight of her quiet, self-sacrificing devotion to her home Bastian. Do you really mean to say so? Stensgard. And you, with your penetrating eye, have suspected nothing? Bastian. Yes, at one time I did think;but now people are talking of your hanging about the Chamberlain's Stensgard. Oh, the Chamberlain's! Well, Monsen, I'll tell you frankly that for a moment I did hesitate; but, thank goodness, that is over; now I see my way quite clear before me. Bastian. There's my hand. I'll back you up, you may be sure. And as for Ragna--why, she daren't do anything but what I and father wish. Stensgard. Yes, but your father--that's just what I wanted to say Bastian. Sh! There--I hear Madam Rundholmen. Now's your chance to speak for me, if she's not too busy; for then she's apt to be snappish. You do your best, my dear fellow, and leave the rest to me. Do you happen to have seen Aslaksen? Stensgard. He's probably at the polling-booth. [bastian goes out by the back, as Madam Rundholmen enters from the right. Madam Rundholmen. Things are going as smooth as possible, Mr. Stensgard; every one is voting for you. Stensgard. That's very odd. Madam Rundholmen. Goodness knows what Monsen of Stonelee will say. Stensgard. I want a word with you, Madam Rundholmen. Madam Rundholmen. Well, what is it? Stensgard. Will you listen to me? Madam Rundholmen. Lord yes, that I will. Stensgard. Well then: you were talking just now about being alone in the world Madam Rundholmen. Oh, it was that horrid old Heire Stensgard. You were saying how hard...

What are the key contexts for understanding his appearance on the world stage? This collection provides thirty contributions from leading scholars in theatre studies, literary studies, book history, philosophy, music, and history, offering a rich interdisciplinary understanding of Ibsen's work, with chapters ranging across cultural and aesthetic contexts including feminism, scientific discovery, genre, publishing, music, and the visual arts. The book ends by charting Ibsen's ongoing globalization and gives valuable overviews of major trends within Ibsen studies. Accessibly written, while drawing on the most recent scholarship, Ibsen in Context provides unique access to Ibsen the man, his works, and their afterlives across the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Collected Works of Henrik Ibsen, Vol. 6: The League of Youth Pillars of Society After the momentous four years of his first visit to Italy, to which we owe Brand and Peer Gynt, Ibsen left Rome in May, 1868, visited Florence, and then spent the summer at Berchtesgaden in southern Bavaria. There he was busy mentally wrestling with the new play which was to take shape as De Unges Forbund (the League of Youth); but he did not begin to put it on paper until, after a short stay at Munich, he settled down in Dresden, in the early autumn. T hence he wrote to his publisher, Hegel, on October 31: My new work is mak ing rapid progress. The whole outline is finished and written down. The first act is completed, the second will be in the course of a week, and by the end of the year I hope to have the play ready. It will be in prose, and in every way adapted for the stage. The title is The League of Youth; The Almighty a comedy, in five acts. At Hegel's suggestion he omitted the second title, though, he wrote, it could have given offence to no one who had read the play. Book excerpt: Henrik Ibsen's drama is the most prominent and lasting contribution of the cultural surge seen in Scandinavian literature in the later nineteenth century. When he made his debut in Norway in 1850, the nation's literary presence was negligible, yet by 1890 Ibsen had become one of Europe's most famous authors. Contrary to the standard narrative of his move from restrictive provincial origins to liberating European exile, Narve Fulsås and Tore Rem show how Ibsen's trajectory was preconditioned on his continued embeddedness in Scandinavian society and culture, and that he experienced great success in his home markets. This volume traces how Ibsen's works first travelled outside Scandinavia and studies the mechanisms of his appropriation in Germany, Britain and France. Engaging with theories of book dissemination and world literature, and re-assessing the emergence of 'peripheral' literary nations, this book provides new perspectives on the work of this major figure of European literature and theatre.

Book excerpt: Henrik Ibsen is now known as the father of modern drama, the most influential dramatist of the modern age, but he was little appreciated in his native Norway during his own lifetime. Rebellious and confrontational as a young man, Ibsen wrote plays that exposed the injustice of middle-class social conventions and gave us some of the most deeply moving psychological portraits, of women in particular, since Shakespeare. Michael Meyer's in-depth study examines Ibsen's life and his skills as a dramatist, exploring the development of his language, style and themes. Taking his material from newspapers, memoirs, letters and theses, he gives a full and sensitive depiction of the man and his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1890, Ibsen's Hedda Gabler has been a recurring point of fascination for readers, theater audiences, and artists alike. Newly married, yet utterly bored, the character of Hedda Gabler evokes reflection on beauty, love, passion, death, nihilism, identity, and a host of other topics of an existential nature. It is no surprise that Ibsen's work has gained the attention of philosophically-minded readers from Nietzsche, Lou Andreas-Salom , and Freud, to Adorno, Cavell, and beyond. Once staged at avant-garde theaters in Paris, London, and Berlin, Ibsen is now a global phenomenon. The enigmatic character of Hedda Gabler remains intriguing to ever-new generations of actors, audiences, and readers. Hedda Gabler occupies a privileged place in the history of European drama and as a work of literature, and, as this volume demonstrates, invites profound and worthwhile philosophical questions. Through ten newly commissioned chapters, written by leading voices in the fields of drama studies, European philosophy, Scandinavian studies, and comparative literature, this volume brings out the philosophical resonances of Hedda Gabler in particular and Ibsen's drama more broadly.
